Red as Rose (3)
|
It was our four month anniversary. I had already taken her out for a movie, but the more I thought about it, the more I had to see her. It was already midnight, but I thought I would surprise her. That is when we had our first conversation after all. I decided to take the long walk to her house, so I snuck out of mine and started walking. By one in the morning I was there. The light in her upstairs bedroom window was on, so I climbed up the tree beside her window and began inching across the branch that led to her window. I peeked in the window and saw Rose sitting on her bed, clutching a razor. I couldn't move. As I sat there, I watched her run it across the smooth skin on her shoulder. I watched as the blood leaked out slowly, red as a rose.
I climbed down from the tree quietly, shocked at what I had seen. Rose had never seen me. I began the walk home. Tears streamed down my face as I thought about my perfect Rose doing that to herself. I couldn't believe it. The scene kept replaying itself in my head. Time and time again I saw the blood slowly drip out. I couldn't face Rose all weekend. I didn't answer her calls, I didn't call her, and I didn't visit her at all. I knew I was making it worse for my sweet angel, but I couldn't help it. I didn't trust myself. I would grab her and shake her and probably scream some pretty mean things at her. I had to wait.
On Monday I walked into school cautiously. Rose was surrounded by people like usual and like usual she was being her cheerful self. Only I could tell that her eyes were darting around the room, searching. I knew those beautiful eyes were searching for me. I had to leave. I pushed my way through the crowd and stormed into the locker room. I punched a locker hard. How dare she act so normal when this was happening!! What was wrong with her?!? I slammed into another locker and sank to the floor with my back pressed up against the cool blue metal.
My body shook the lockers as I sobbed. Five minutes before the bell rang I stood up and cleaned myself up. I went straight upstairs to Science. Everything was so normal. Mrs.Parker still droned on about things nobody cared about, people still talked in her class, and nobody seemed to notice that it was different. Nobody noticed that my universe had been crumpled under the tiny feet of the sweet loving Rose. I doodled on my notebook. Everytime I would lift the pen it would show a broken rose, oozing blood onto the ground. Finally I knew I had to talk to her. When Science was over, I walked to her locker.
