“Well, you didn’t have to do that.” Tanner said.

“What do you mean?” I asked him. My head hurt and I was seeing two and everything was blurry and loud.

“Just please, go to sleep. You’ll be better tomorrow morning.” He said.
Better? With a hangover, yeah right.

I stood up and wrapped my arms around Tanner’s neck and kissed him. “I love you, Tanner…why did you break up with me?” I cried. “Is there something wrong with me.”

“Monique, stop please. Go lay down.” Tanner unwrapped my arms and carried me to the bed.

“Is there something wrong with me, Tanner?” I asked him again. “Am I ugly? Is it because your brother doesn’t like me? I’m sorry but he started it.

“No, no. Your beautiful. And my brother will get over it.” Tanner kissed my forehead and put the sheets up under my chin.

“Then why?” I slurred out. My eyelids were closing but I forced them open so I can hear his answer. Of course I don’t need my eyes to hear but still…”Am I not good enough for you, because I’ve heard that before.”

“No no. You’re perfect…”

“Then why?” I asked again.

“Because, Monique. I’m not.” he whispered. Oh no. My eyes were closing, I can’t open them. Please open, I need to here this…Tanner spoke again. “Because, Monique…I have--”

God almighty my eyes closed.


Tanner looked at Monique. She was sleeping soundly now. Too bad she missed his last words. Then she might have understood.

Tanner kissed her lips and tucked another blanket under her chin. Then left, closing the door behind him. Tony appeared from his room. “Is she okay now?”

Tanner nodded and Tony scoffed. “Who gets drunk then sleep over her boyfriend’s house?” Tanner shook his head, if he only knew, he thought.

“I’m not her boyfriend.” Tanner said and went to the bathroom to brush his teeth and Tony followed him.

“You’re not?” he asked and Tanner shook his head again. “Why? Is it because I treated her bad? I’m sorry, I’ll apologize in the morning.”

“No its not that, Tony.” Tony looked up at him, waiting for his answer. “I’m not going to make it.”

Suddenly, Tony’s eyes filled with tears. “Don’t say that. Of course you are. You are! Don’t say that, Tanner! Don’t!” Tony rushed to his side and gave his crying brother a bear hug.
