The Birch's Lament part 4

Short Created on 2-26-08 Views(31) Story Rating G

We heard the sounds of father snoring, as we snuck out the front door into the night. The sky above was lit by a full moon and a blanket of stars. Slowly and quietly we crept past the dogs in the yard, and onward towards the forest, that was just beyond our yard.

“ Do you know where we are going?” I asked in hushed whisper. My sister lead the way, through the trees, her light-footed steps so graceful compared to my clumsy ones. “ I told you Aria, “ she whispered back. “ This is something new.”

After a little while of traveling in silence, I saw where Liselle was leading. There was a cave of earth underneath an overhang of trees. “ This is fantastic!” I cried. Liselle just smiled. “ Shall we explore, Princess Aria.” We always used our fairy tale names on nights like this. “ But Princess Liselle, “I said wanting to charge head long into the cave.“ We have no light, how can we see in this deep darkness without one?”

“ I didn’t’ think of that!” cried Liselle. I stopped my breathing dead in its tracks. “ You don’t want to go back do you?” I’m sure my eyes were wide and terrified. Liselle was completely composed though, “ Of course not, Princess Aria my love.” She said. “ We shall have to postpone our adventure for a later date.”

With that decision made we fled from the cave to our usual escape. For in the forest there was a clearing of tall grass surrounded by the trees, and scattered with flowers. It was like a ring of heaven for us.

It was the spring so all the trees were new birth green and the buds of flowers were everywhere, and soft dirty lay under out feet. That night as we entered the little clearing a hundred lightning bugs blinked in the darkness, like a fairy colony.

The wind blew whistling a little through the trees. We’d always imagined it was like the pipe music for what we were about to do. “ My Princess Liselle,” I’d always say. “ Will you dance with me?” And Liselle would always reply. “ Yes, Princess Aria my love, I shall.”

Then we would dance, amongst the fireflies, and their fairy lights, and in the glow of the silver moon. When we danced we were free.
