The Birch's Lament part 2

Short Created on 2-26-08 Views(30) Story Rating G

The sun was setting, but that didn’t matter to my sister and I. For darkness was constant in that house, where we were forced to call home.

Our mother was dead, and we lived with a man whom we knew as our father. My sister Liselle and I are twins, she is the eldest by two minuets.

Our mother died when we were three and since then life has been very dark. Our so-called father is gone for most of the day, but when he comes home, a gate to hell is unlocked.

I do not wish to give the gory details, for they are nothing to glamorize. He hurt my sister and I. He hurt us a lot, especially when he drank. And that is all I will say.

He swore that if we ever tried to tell someone or run away he would sick his three trained and very mean dogs on us. We never doubted that threat for a second. Which is why we remained silent for so many years of torture.

“ Aria,” called Liselle. “ He’ll be home any minuet!” I hurriedly picked up my crayons and shoved them back into the box. Together Liselle and I ran back to our room.

Father would be home very soon. Liselle had his dinner prepared and being kept warm in the stove. If his meal was cold, then there would be tears tonight.

“Just remember Aria,” Liselle told me. “ Tonight is our night.” I nodded. It was Friday. Every Friday father went to bed early, so he could get up before the dawn on Saturday and go fishing for the entire day.

This night was our night of freedom.
