The Kiss part 2
|
The boy walked the forest path carrying wood upon his back. He had enough now to warm his house for the next few days. The deep blue sky was paling giving way to the gray of night. He would be home before the rising of the sickle moon that night.
He walked on his way aware that the woods were excited and that the air itself felt restless. He knew it was wise to be on his guard. His dark eyes darted back and forth keeping watch on his surroundings. He whistled a tune to fill the forest with a sound of his own beyond the crunching of foot falls.
He rounded the small pond that lay wait in the forest. It’s black depths the thing of legend. He feared not the pond, nor its inhabitants. He had seen the creature in the water and held no worries for it. The creature would be sleeping this time of day anyway.
The smallest ripple alerted the boy to attention. He had seen something, a hand maybe. He set down his bundle of firewood and went close to the waters edge. Looking close, his sharp eyes caught sight of a figure in the water. He knew it was a person immediately. He dived in fearlessly without even thinking, swimming towards the person in the water. Somehow he was able to see in the black waters and he saw what lay there.
A girl was still and unconscious under the water. She was sinking. Even though the water was dark he could see her ivory skin and reddish brown hair that seemed to glow in the blackness. He reached her and put an arm around her waist, pulling her up to the surface.
Dragging the nearly lifeless girl to land was easy enough for him. He next checked her pulse. Her heart was stayed and her breathing had stopped. His heart raced. He had no idea what to do. She needed air. He began to press his hands upon her chest, trying to restart her heart. Repeatedly he tried this to no avail. He knew she needed air, but he didn’t want to be the one to give it to her. Am I that much of a coward. Thought the boy.
At this he tilted her head up and pressed his lips against hers, breathing his own life’s breath into her. He could feel himself blushing. You’d better be grateful. He muttered to the girl as he broke away from her and pressed once again against her heart.
To his relief the girl sputtered awake. She coughed and shook and her eyes slowly fluttered open.
