Playing the Part of the Hostage part 8
|
The girls and I were led back through the various hallways and stairwells back to our little white cell of a room. Our old cloths had been taken away, not that we were surprised.
“ You will rest now, and begin work tomorrow.” Said Lark. “ The white robes under your pillows are for you to sleep in.” She left us without another word. We all sat I silence listening for the click of the door locking. Surprising there was none.
“ Do you think she’ll come back?” I asked. The other girls shrugged. “ Why?” asked Faye. I was about to answer when the same Arabic voice as before spoke through an intercom. “ Someone find that thing.” I said.
“ Newcomers welcome. “ it said. We all scattered round the room trying to find the speaker. “ Lights out will be in one-half of an hour. Use that time accordingly.”“ Its over here. “ Cried Amy. We all rushed over to a vent in the floor. There was a little chord with a tiny speaker on it. “ Good night to you all.” Said the voice and then the intercom clicked off.
“ Do you think they can hear us?” said Kylie. “ Or worse can they see us.” We were all alarmed by the prospect of being watched, but doubted it to be true cause of the lack of space to hide things in this dingy cell. “ Lets put a pillow over the vent.” Exclaimed Faye who said this and then did it. “ Well that’s great but now I don’t have a pillow.” Said Amy. Faye shrugged as if to say better you than me. “ I’ll put it back” Faye said. “ Now Anna, What were you going to say before?”
I pulled the note out from its hiding place in my shirt. “ You remember that girl, who fell on me in the sanctuary.” I said and all the girls nodded. “ She gave me this note.”
I unfolded the paper as the girls all huddled around to see what it said.
Do as you are told. Don’t raise suspicion. My countrymen and I see as you do. We must go unnoticed if we are to find out how to get away. Trust no one, except your clan and mine. To respond, tear this paper to pieces and throw it out in the hall. The door will be unlocked. We wait for your reply.
“Do we even need to discuss this.” Said Amy. In agreement we all took a corner of the paper and began shredding. We quietly went over to the door and opened it. No one was in the hall. We threw the paper out the door and quickly went back into our room.
Silently we waited by the door. We heard the creak of a door opening and then a slam. We hoped the right people had gotten our message.
“ All we can do now is wait I guess. “ said Kylie. “ Wrong” I said. “ We can change into our weird little robes and sleep.” Amy got up saying. “ Like we’re actually gonna sleep in this awful place.” I began peeling off the ridiculous cloths we were forced to wear. “ What choice do we have?” I said. “ We need to blend in if we want to get out of here.” The others all shrugged and nodded.
We all moved our little mats and blankets close to each other, for the night. Eventually the lights suddenly clicked off, leaving us in total darkness. “ So do you think anyone knows we’re gone.’ I heard Faye’s voice whisper into the darkness. “ I have no idea. We know the boys are here, but did any of you notice that Mr. and Mrs. Dunmore weren’t at our little orientation.” “ You don’t think something bad happened to them do you?” We all fell silent. “ We’re gonna have to watch each others backs.” Said Kylie of all people. “ There’s something else going on here besides the holding captive of random people. There’s something bigger. This guy in charge is like trying to make his own world here or something.” “ And he doesn’t take well to people who challenge his authority.” I said remembering the place on my cheek where he had hit me. “ Tomorrow we need to be on our toes and keep our eyes open for anything that might give us a clue as to where we are, or how to escape.”“ First we need to find out where we are and how to contact the boys.” Said Kylie. “ You girls understand that.” I said and Amy and Faye murmured yes’. “ I’m proud of you girls. We’re gonna be the ones to get out of here. We’ll show Mr. master-Sir not to pick on little American girls.”I heard a chuckle from those who lie next to me. Better chuckling than crying, I thought.
