Beyond: The Spirit of a Warrior part 6
|
The sounds of murmuring voices and the rushing of water filled my ears as I awoke. Bursting from my sleep I instantly sprang upward. A surge of pain caught me in my left side. I went onto my back, the pain subsiding as I did. I must have been really hurt when I was thrown into the tree.
From where I lay I looked around. I saw that I was in a cave of sorts, a candle was lit next to me and not far away I saw Elizabeth lying on a cot still unconscious. How’d she get a bed while I get the cold cave floor? I thought. I always get the shaft. My brooding didn’t last long though. I ran my fingers along my left side, feeling for whatever was wrong. I quickly came to the conclusion that I had at least bruised a couple of ribs. The cuts on my face weren’t bleeding and had begun to scab over, all in all the damage was minimal. For that I was thankful.
I wondered how we had gotten inside a cave and who had brought us here. I could hear many voices but I could see no one. The voices sounded human so I decided to call out. “ Hello,” I cried “Hello”. One call was all it took because as soon as I spoke the murmuring stopped and I heard footsteps approaching. I suddenly felt a pang of anxiousness. I had no idea whether I was in the company of decent persons or things. I prayed hard that whatever had moved Elizabeth and I were human.
From around a corner of the cave came a figure. It was a man. As he came into the candlelight I saw that he was a young man. “ So you have awakened.” He said. His green eyes sparkled in the candlelight. I’m not gonna lie to you, he was gorgeous. Woa-buddy, was he ever, but I didn’t let that affect me.
“ Who are you?” I cried trying to sit up again, and again was brought back down by an intense pain in my side. “ Be still, my Lady,” He said to me. And yes he did just call me “Lady.” I had never once been called a “ Lady” before in my entire life, and when a hot guy calls you lady it can take your breath away.
“ Please stay still, “ He said. “ My name is Landen. I came upon you in the woods as you were held captive by the goblin.” “ SO it was you who shot at it!” I cried irritably. “ I wasn’t unconscious you know.” He was taken back at my accusation, like he wasn’t used to be spoken too this way. “ You ruined my plans, I hope your happy. Where are we anyway? And who are you?” I added, a little less irritated than before.
He just sat there and stared at me. It kind of freaked me out. It was like he was trying to make sense of my words, like he’d never heard anything like them before. “ Hullo,” I said waving my hand in front of his eyes. “ DO you understand me?” He snapped out of his odd little lack of comprehension and answered me. “ Forgive me, Lady.” He said. “ I can understand you perfectly. It’s just that I’ve never heard a young lady talk like that before. First you fight off a goblin with nothing more than a dagger, and now you go off yelling demands like royalty. You should be grateful I’m not easily offended cause you could be in big trouble right now if I weren’t.” My eyes narrowed out of spite as I asked, “Why’s that?” He looked surprised again. “ You really don’t know who I am.” “ I wouldn’t have asked if you knew.” I retorted.
He began to laugh, though I have no idea why, I thought he was going nutty on me. “ Okay, Landen.” I said interrupting his laughter. “ Would you mind telling me where I am exactly.” His laughter subsided and he answered. “ You are in the forest of the three rivers, north-east of the city of Novem.”
That meant absolutely nothing to me. “ And where would that be?” I asked questioning him further. He looked awe struck again and spoke in disbelief. “ In the south center of the Continent of Isolde.”
Isolde. The name sounded in my head. Sounding beautiful and enchanting. I just wanted to say it aloud over and over again but I didn’t I only said it once. “ Isolde.” Landen nodded. I sat there silently wondering if I should tell him where I was from, and ask if he could help us get back. “ What is your name, Lady?” Landen asked me. I snapped out of my thoughts with a start, “ Oh, I’m Hannah.” I said, “ And that girl over there is my sister Elizabeth.” He smiled. I smiled too. He had dimples. I knew then I would have to watch myself around him. Dimple people you have to watch. They’re tricky.
“ Well Lady Hannah, what were you doing in the woods with your sister unaccompanied?” Asked Landen. Lady Hannah. Let me tell that kind of title no matter how tomboyish you are never gets old. “ We were lost.” I told him, because it really wasn’t a lie at all. “ Where is your home? I will send word to your families that you are safe so they need not worry.” As sweet as his gesture was I knew it was pointless to lie at this point. I figured he seemed like a nice enough guy even if he did have those dimples, so I told him the truth. I told him everything.
I told him that we come from another world and that we found a door in our basement, which led us into a field of wild flowers. That we got in a fight, and separated, but then I heard Elizabeth cry out and I ran back to save. I described my fight with the goblin up till the point where I fell unconscious because of his arrow that caused the goblin to throw me into a tree. “ Do you believe it?” I asked him expecting him to laugh me out of the cave. His gaze was serious, as he sat thinking silently. “ I believe your words are true. “ “ Really?!” I said quite surprised. “ You have no reason to lie,” he told me.” And it’s not entirely unheard of.” “ Its not?” I said. He smiled and nodded. “ No it is not.”
Not having to hide anything put me at ease. “ SO did ya kill the goblin?” I asked. “ Yes, he was already dying by the time I shot him.” He said. “ I just helped him along a little. You did quite the damage on that creature.” I smirked proudly. “ Goblins are highly feared creatures in this territory, I’ve never known some one to fight one so fearlessly. Are you as unique in your world as you appear to be in mine.” I wasn’t really sure if he was complimenting me or not. “ I guess, “ I said not knowing to be happy or insulted.
Suddenly I heard a gasp for breath. Elizabeth had seen fit to finally awaken and grace us with her presence. I almost immediately missed her unconscious state. She saw that she was in a cave, and that a stranger was leaning over me and began to scream. She threw a mug that sat next to her at Landen, but he dodged it. As smooth as he was I was not so lucky. The mug hit me square on the nose. I let out a cry of pain/irritation. “ Elizabeth!” I roared. “ Chill out! You’re fine!”
Elizabeth went deathly quiet, and clung to her blankets. “ Are you okay,” she asked me. “ I was laying on my back holding my nose, feeling happy because it wasn’t bleeding. “ Yeah,” was all I said.
She looked absolutely terrified. It was kinda pathetic really. But Landen went over to the side of her cot and knelt beside it. “ You are quite safe here Lady Elizabeth.” He said. The whole Lady thing caught her off guard too. After a moment of uncertainty she smiled, those dimples showing on her face. Landen smiled to. I thought I was going to be sick. Then without looking at me she spoke. “ Is this for real?” Landen laughed and I answered. “ Yeah.”
Landen then got up and said he would be back soon with water and food. I tried to sot up again, more carefully this time, and managed it despite the pain. Elizabeth sat on the edge of her cot and we sat quietly fro a while as we were very much along in the back of this cave. “ So who was that guy?” Asked Elizabeth smiling. “ That’s Landen. “ I replied. “ He got me knocked unconscious in with efforts to rescue us.” “ Don’t sound so angry about it, eh did bring us to safety didn’t he?” I scowled. “ I was moments away from slaying that goblin while maintaining consciousness. And then he came in playing the shinning knight in armor and ruined my plans.” Elizabeth rolled her eyes. “ Oh can’t you be a damsel in distress for once on your life.” I scowled even more. “ Never!” I cried.
At this Landen returned. “ Never, will you what.” “ She claims she will never be a damsel in distress.” Said Elizabeth quite ready to rub my name right through any impurity that she could find. “ I can speak for myself, you know. “ I said glaring at Elizabeth. “ Landen just laughed at us. “ One can certainly tell that you two are sisters.” I chuckled and Elizabeth just glared at me, like it was all my fault. Cause apparently everything is my fault.
