Part 1

It was the last month of summer, the feeling and spirit of freedom as ending. The back to school sales and the cooling weather gave every one who was still of schooling age and uneasy stomach. Summer seemed to have just gotten started and now in about three weeks it would all be over.

I will be starting my junior year of high school, my older sister will be a freshman in the local college, and my even older brother will be commuting to a university. My name is Lori, my sister is Mary Beth (MB), and my brother’s name is John Michael (JM).

This story begins with us three.

JM was sitting at the dinning room table eating some grape nuts cereal, and I had just sat down with my bowl of kix when I saw a man walking through the small field in back or our house. The young man looked a bit dazed and confused. He was also wearing the most bizarre cloths. They were bright and colorful and looked liked something out of a Final Fantasy video game.

The man then began walking through our neighbors yard. “ There’s some guy walking through the neighbors yard. “ I said aloud to no one in particular. “ Probably just a meter reader.” Said JM. The strange man made me nervous. “ I don’t like him. “ I said locking tight the sliding glass door that leads to the backyard. “ You’re such a pansy.” JM said taking in a spoonful cereal.

Ignoring him, I sat down again so that I could eat. I hear Mary Beth clamoring around in the kitchen with the radio on. She was probably steaming broccoli. I hate broccoli.

I ate a bite of my cereal, and turned to look out the sliding glass door. The strange man was right through our yard and up onto our deck. My heart was racing. I turned towards JM my eyes wide, but something was wrong with him. He was just sitting there frozen mid-bite, and his eyes were all glassy.  The man was now by the door and was staring at me.

Then to my horror, somehow, the man stepped right through the glass door, which was locked. If I had been standing, I would have fallen over. Since I was not though I had to make do with dropping my spoon.

The man looked at me in my shocked state and oddly enough he bowed. “ Lady,” he said. “ Would you please get me two sheets of blank white paper and a pen?” Without thinking I complied. I got up dashed down the stairs to the computer and got him all that he asked. It never really occurred to me that I shouldn’t.

“ Thank you. “ he replied when I had returned with he items he had asked for. He then bent awkwardly over the table and began to draw on the paper. What he drew was extremely odd. It was a clown and a very evil looking one at that. “ I hate clowns.” I said completely forgetting that this intruder was a total stranger. “ They’re so freaky.”

“ I agree,” said the man. “ Despicable creatures aren’t they.”

The man quickly finished and I was very interested as to what he would put on the second sheet of paper. “ Done!” Cried the man standing upright. I assumed this meant that there would be no second picture, and the man as if reading my mind, said. “ When drawing with a pen it is always best to layer the paper, somehow the ink always seems to find a way to bleed through to the other side.” As he said this he looked me straight in the eye, and I felt I had seen him somewhere before. And that I knew him from somewhere, but I just couldn’t place him.

“ I should probably be going.” Said the man. This is when Mb finally noticed that something was up. Two claps for MB. “ Who are you talking to?” asked MB from the kitchen. I didn’t answer her.

The man was by the door about to leave when he turned and said in a very grave and serious tone. “ A storm is coming. Its going to be bad. You’d best remember to leave on the lights. Like ink, the dark has a way of going where its not wanted.” Then he turned and left in the same manner that he came. I watched him leave and walk back out into the field. “ What are you looking at?”

I whirled my head around. JM was back to normal. “ That man….” I paused. Should I tell them? I thought “ Never mind.” I could think of no way to explain what had just happened. He wouldn’t believe me anyway. I wasn’t even sure if I believed me.

I sat back down at the table questioning my sanity when I saw the clown picture again. I picked it up and revealed the piece of paper underneath, but it was not blank as it ought to have been. On this piece of paper there was a more intricate picture.

Two towers stood on the page, covered with thorn vines and roses. At the very top of the towers were silhouettes of some kind. On the left tower there were five of them and on the right there was only one bigger one. All were framed in a circle and all were female, but the most curious thing about this picture was the words written between the towers.

- “One for one-

one for each to be rescued-

one princess-

one knight-

all to be taken -

in the dark of night-

all that are supposed-

all or maybe not-

could one be in danger-

and rescue themselves-

could one be a knight-

and need to be saved-

what supposed plans of darkness-

have unknowingly failed-

hope hangs by a string of pearls-

what does the future have in store-

for both the princess-

and the knight-

who can know it-

who can know” –

I understood none of this and I felt as though I needed to figure it out. Hiding the pictures from John Michael and Mary Beth, I ran up to my room. But before I shut myself up in my room I asked one question. “ Is it going to storm tonight?” JM snorted his reply. “ No, it’s supposed to be clear all week.” I closed myself up in my room and spent the rest of the day contemplating the morning’s events. Little did I know how bad tonight was going to be and that tomorrow would be even worse.
