Beyond: The Spirit of a Warrior part 5
|
I set off at a sprint faster than even I can ever remember running. I passed in and through the trees praying she’d be all right. I didn’t even want to imagine what could cause Elizabeth to scream like she did. After seeing that cloud/shadow thing that killed everything it touched I had, had enough with mythical creatures. Elizabeth screamed again, then following after I heard a snarl and a cruel laugh. “ Hannah!” I heard her cry. “ Stay away!” I ran full speed ahead, because I could see her now scrambling through the trees. She ran towards me and I towards her. “ I drew out the small dagger I had brought with me ready to face head on whatever it was that was frightening my sister. As Elizabeth came at me I looked beyond her to see what followed. But I didn’t see anything. Was it gone or was it just hiding?
“ What happened?” I cried both of us coming to a halting stop. I pushed her behind me and asked her again. “ What happened?” She was sweating, panting for breath and was wide eyed with fear. “ I was attacked.” She said. “ It came out of nowhere. It was big and green-ish, with skin like a reptile or something. It had four big yellow eyes, and long arms and legs like a monkey.” “ You were attacked by a reptilian monkey?” I said. She only glared at me, but I wasn’t looking at her I was scanning the area for this creature. But rarely does one need to wait long for an evil creature to show itself. They are ever so impatient.
I heard a twig snap from high above us in the trees. Instinctively I pushed Elizabeth aside and threw myself in the opposite direction. The creature descended (and or fell) from the trees with a thud landing in-between us. The thing looked exactly as Elizabeth had described though she forgot to mention the frog like mouth that was full of razor sharp teeth, and the claws that it bore on both it’s hands and feet. This it just great, I thought. The creature saw me and smiled cruelly as though I would make I nice follow up meal to Elizabeth, but then it saw my dagger. It’s eyes narrowed as it turned it’s back on Elizabeth. He was going to come after me because I was the threat. I was deathly afraid. I was also really pumped. This is the kind of situation that I thrived on, and I was loving it.
I thought that this creature seemed like some type of goblin but I could really only guess. It moved with great speed and skill but then again so did I. The creature charged me and I maneuvered to the left. As it passed I jammed my dagger into its side but it was glanced off instantly. Its skin was thick and worked as protective armor. Great. The creature spun round and slashed its claws across my face. I dodged it mostly but still three red lines appeared on my cheek and began to bleed. “ Hannah!” I heard Elizabeth scream. But I didn’t reply. It followed that attack by repeating the same feet several times more. I was able to block the sweep of his claws with my dagger but I was being pushed backwards. I was on the defensive and I hated that, but I needed it to get closer to the enemy. I could see now that its belly and its palms were of a different coloring than the rest of it. Maybe it was weaker than the hard skin that covered its back.
The creature swiped both claws horizontally at me. I ducked beneath it quickly and threw myself forward at the creature’s gut. The dagger sank into its flesh and the creature cried out. It threw me aside but my grip was still firmly on the dagger. As I went flying backwards the dagger came with me. Blooded poured out from the wound and the creature cried out again.
I landed on the ground and the creature kicked dirt into my face obscuring my vision. I hear the scuffling of feet as it ran away. “ Get away from me!” I heard Elizabeth scream. It had decided that getting me was too much effort so now it was going for the lesser threat. Some of the dirt still clung to my eyes but I got up and charged anyway. The creature had Elizabeth by the throat and held her pinned next to a tree. She kicked and screamed and wailed doing all she could but it was not enough. The creature roared into her face its fowl breath consuming her lungs and she went out. Just like that she went completely limp and unconscious.
“ Let her Go!” I yelled as I sprang onto the creatures back attempting to get my blade near the things throat. It did let go causing Elizabeth to fall to the ground. The creature grabbed the back of my shirt and threw against a near by tree. My back hit the tree with a crack and pain shot through my entire left side. I knew I would be feeling that one later. I slowly stood up to move away but before I could the creature had me. The dagger was lost from my grasp and I was now as helpless as Elizabeth had been. Or so the creature thought. I figured that Elizabeth’s sudden bout of unconsciousness had something to do with this thing breathing on her. The creature attempted the same to me but I held my breath. I pretended to fall into unconsciousness and I lay limp in the creatures grasp.
My plan was working perfectly until one unexpected factor came rushing out from behind a tree. An arrow whizzed past my head and right into the creature’s throat. The Creature proceeded to throw me hard into another tree. This time I hit my head. I lay on the ground pushing off the threads of darkness that fought to over take my eyes and mind. I saw another arrow pierce the creature’s throat and then I passed out into the darkness of unconsciousness.
