Beyond: The Spirit of a Warrior part 4

Fiction Created on 12-18-07 Views(12) Story Rating G

It was just really bizarre. I looked in front of me and saw a sea of flowers enclosed by a vast forest of trees I had never seen before. Come to think of it I had never seen any of the flowers either. O well. Elizabeth and I took a few steps foreword.  We both looked back upon the same sight, a random doorway in the middle of a field of flowers. Just beyond the inside of the doorframe was a dull-lighted basement made of cement blocks. The door had stayed open and so I had no fears about not being able to return. I noticed that even Elizabeth was relaxing a little. Her eyes scanned the land as though she were looking for something, or waiting for something to show itself to us.

I had no cares for the question’s like “ how” and “ why”. All that matters is that this was real. It was really happening to both of us, for whatever reason. I just didn’t see the point in searching for something that would probably bite us in the butt later on. I too believed that this was meant to happen to us, but in life I’ve found that purpose is something you don’t see or understand until after it’s happened. I guess I’m just brilliant like that.

Neither of us spoke a single word for some time. We both were simply lost in the wonder of the whole situation. The flowers were swaying brilliant colors before our eyes and the day was warm with a cool breeze moving out from the trees. The sky was bluer than I had ever seen and I could hear the chattering of small woodland animals above the whispering hum of the wind. It was a perfect day in wherever we were.

We wandered farther away from the door, careful to never let it completely out of our sights. “ Do you think any people live near this place?” Asked Elizabeth. “It seems so strange that a place so beautiful would look so untouched.” I really had no answer for her. “ I don’t know, maybe......”

I was cut off as I saw a great shadow moving cross the sky. The bright blue that had inhabited the heavens was being marred by a swiftly moving wisp of black cloud. The animals quieted and a few birds fled the trees where they were perched.  It’s shadow fell to the earth passing over the trees. Everything the shadow touched became withered and died.  A panic began to rise in me and I saw that it rose in Elizabeth as well. The shadow passed through the once flawless field killing all the beautiful flowers in it’s reach.

From the ground where we watched I saw it first. I looked ahead of the cloud and I discerned it’s heading. It was going for the door. “ O No,” Was all I let escape from my mouth. Elizabeth caught on instantly; her reaction was a bit of a shocker for me. As soon as she understood that the door was about to be destroyed she took off running. I had seen her run before but never this fast or intense. She was trying to make it back through the door.

“ No, Stop!” I yelled as I tore after her. I was a few yards behind her and the door was getting close. But the shadow was also close. It left a trail of death behind as it went, and now it was gunning for our only rout to home. Thanks to my sister’s brilliant reaction the shadow was going to get her along with the door. But I wasn’t going to let it.  I reached out and grabbed Elizabeth just in time. I yanked her backwards out of the shadows reach and we fell, her on top of me. The shadow passed over the door and the whole thing was reduced to dust and blew away in the breeze. Our way home was gone with the wind. And we were stranded in a place we knew nothing about. Mom and dad should really go on vacation without us more often.

Don’t get me wrong, I was totally freaked out that the way to home had been obliterated, but at that particular moment the whole idea of being alive was good enough for me. But apparently it wasn’t good enough for Elizabeth. Tears ran down her face as she saw the door blow away as dust in the wind. “ What do we do now?” She sobbed. “ How are we going to get home? I have a test in psychology tomorrow, I can’t miss it.” I rolled my eyes as I hauled both of us to our feet. “ I can’t believe you some times.” I said.   “ Stop crying, you’re just making things worse for yourself. Let’s go.” Her tear washed faced looked at me with loathing. “ This is all your fault.” Cried Elizabeth. “ I knew that this wasn’t safe, but you insisted that we come anyway. And now we can’t get back.” I knew it was just the fear talking but I got annoyed anyway. “ Listen here, you didn’t have to come. “ She put her hands on her hips as always. “ O please,” she said. “ I had to come to keep you out of trouble. You would have come her all alone if I hadn’t happened upon you in the basement.” “ What!?” I cried. “ I do not need your company nor do I need your protection. And besides if you were so wise and smart why would I have to save your butt from being reduced to ash?” Her gaze fell from mine and she gave no reply. “ You do what you want,” I said turning my back on her. “But I’m going to go looking for help. You can come with me or you can stay, I honestly don’t care.” I took off towards the woods leaving Elizabeth in the now partly dead field of wild flowers. I didn’t look back once; instead I looked forward, seeing nothing but trees. I walked for a little while taking in all I could.  I hoped that it would not get dark anytime soon.

I wandered with no real sense of where I was or where I was going. I was alone with my thoughts. After about an hour I began to feel guilty about leaving Elizabeth behind. I decided to go back. And it was just in time too, because as I turned around to go find Elizabeth, a screamed echoed through the forest. Elizabeth was in trouble.
