Playing the Part of the Hostage

The door creaked open. An old native looking woman stood before us wearing the exact same garb as us four, except her shirt was blue. Her dark eyes were dull and her gray hair fell down her back in a limp braid. She looked at us and I could see the look of pity and sorrow. Pity and sorrow for us.

“ Come,” said the woman. “ It is time to see the master.” Quietly we all rose from where we sat and followed after the woman. Amy took the lead, and just behind her was Kylie and then Faye. I took up the back as I hoped to scope out the layout of the place unnoticed. We stepped out into a hall that was long in both directions. And many doors parted off from it. The hall was instead of being white was simply gray. The floor, walls and ceiling were all of cement blocks. And just like in our room bare light bulbs lit the way.

We walked down the hallway in silence for a while until Amy spoke. “ What is your name.” She asked boldly. Like I said before she as a people person and she knew no strangers. “ My name is Lark.” “ O,” said Amy “ Like the bird?”The old woman, Lark nodded. “Yes.” At this point I decided to cut in.

“ Lark,” I said. “ Where are we.” The old woman didn’t even turn to me when she said, “ It is not known.” All four of us girls let out a gasp. “ How can you not know?” cried Kylie, “Don’t you work for this master person?” “ I do work for him.” Said harshly. “ But not by choice.” Her voice sounded sad at the end. “ You will find out what I mean very soon.”

So we’re going to have to work for this master person too. I thought, but what kind of work?

I gulped hard as I thought of what that might mean. I saw the other girls glance back at me several times as we ventured down the hall top wherever we were being led. I kept my head high and hoped that they couldn’t see how my hands were trembling slightly.

We made a right down another long hallway, where at the very end we went through a big metal door. It took us into a stairwell that went up. We went up one floor, which was as far as it went and entered into another hallway. But this one was entirely different. I realized that we must have been in a basement of sorts.

The hall had floors of wood, painted walls, a carpet on the floor. There were fancy lights in the ceiling , suits of armor scattered in various places along the wall, and also there were paintings and pieces of art. Even better though were the windows. Several windows framed the left side of the wall, looking out over a courtyard.

The courtyard from what I could tell was completely boxed in by the rosy colored stone building that we were in. At this point I figured we were in a mansion or castle, but I wasn’t sure. And even though we were here against our will, I will say that it was really lovely to look at.

Walking this hallway we began to pass other people. We saw several groups of chattering women, but hardly any of them spoke English.  The groups were all of different ethnicities, such as Spanish, Arab, Asian, and French and almost every group spoke a different language. This was all too strange. There must have been some one from every country in this place. It was ridiculous. Were they all being hald captive here?

We made another right down yet another hallway, but stopped somewhere in the middle, in front of a pair of big golden double doors.“ Is this the sanctuary?” Asked Faye her voice quivering a bit.Lark nodded and opened the doors. “ Enter quietly,” was all she said.

Amy hesitated but took the first step through. Faye and Kylie had linked arms and I caught up to Amy hoping to be of some comfort to her.

We entered a big sanctuary, which had numerous dark wooden pews lining both the left and right sides. The carpet was red, the walls were white, and the ceiling was made of the same dark wood has the pews. The lighting in this room was not of electricity, it all was done by candles. The room lay shrouded in a gray shadow, giving off an eerie appearance.

All the pews were filled with people. But they were segregated in more than one way. The men were on the left and the women on the right. And it also appeared to me that the people sat in groups according to their ethnicity as well.

I felt Amy’s trembling hands grasp my arm ad I tried hard to keep my fear from showing. Bolding I led the way strutting a little faster than normal as if to prove my confidence. All I could hear as we walked down the aisle was the sounds of our own footfalls as everyone else was quiet.

Looking forward there was a stage with a pulpit and a few candelabras and some plants. On the very back was there was a giant monstrous pipe organ that filled the entire wall.

There was just something blasphemous about it that made me nervous. This whole sanctuary thing just seemed unsettling to me. Which on top of being kidnapped, and held a prisoner to do who knows what, for some guy whose called master, didn’t make me feel any better.

We reached the stage and stood on the first two steps facing the crowd, Amy and I in front and Faye and Kylie in the back. We stood for a moment and looked out at the faces. The first couple of rows on both sides sat quietly smiling at us as if all was fine and happy. I really wanted to punch them each in the face. One by one I’d wide the smiles off their faces. This was nothing to be smiling about. But everyone else behind them sat with solemn looks on their faces, hinted with ounces of pity. I guessed that they knew what we were in for because they had once been in the same position as us.

“Welcome!” I heard a booming voice say in a heavy German accent. The word was repeated then over an intercom in all the different languages of the people present.

Before I could turn to see who spoke I felt a hand on my shoulder. Immediately I pulled away, spinning round to see who had touched me. There next to me stood a tall dark haired man of middle age. He had unsettling blue eyes and seemed built for a fight. He looked me straight in the eyes but I refused to let him intimidate me. I glared right back at him. As I did this, I saw a hint of irritation. He saw my defiance, I made sure of that.

He moved passed us then, stopping at center stage and thus began. “ Welcome My American ladies.” He said. Amy glanced anxiously at me when he place an emphasis on the word my. That couldn’t be good for us.

“ You have been chosen from your country to be here. From now on you shall be apart of the family we have here.” Family my foot. I thought.

“ You will serve me whole heartedly and will be obedient to the rules laid out before you. For our cause is of noble worth and will be the foundation of events that will change the world. You will eat, sleep, work, and live here with all these brothers and sisters sitting here before you.”

He pointed to the crowed with a sweeping motion . The more he spoke, the more annoyed I became. He expects us to take this laying down does he. I Thought. For all the time he spoke I found myself unable to stop glaring at him.

“ I will ask that you to follow the rules for the safety of yourself and for everyone else around you.” He said this with a glint in his eye. It was a threat. He was challenging us to be rebellious. He wanted to prove his power to us. He was itching for a change to make us fall.“ He turned away from the crowed and turned to face us four girls.

“ This is your life from here on out.”

At this Faye burst into tears. And Kylie, watery eyed herself tried to comfort her. The shakiness I had once felt was replaced by a trembling of anger and Amy seem to become very distant, hiding away everything she felt.

The master guy then out of nowhere tossed a sprinkle of water onto out faces. It was cold. I hate cold water.Amy shuttered as it hit her face but the two behind us barely noticed since their faced were already wet with tears.

“ You may go and find your place in this new life.”

Lark shuffled up to the front of the sanctuary where we stood and beckoned that we follow her. But I wasn’t done yet.

“ What is going on here?” I stepped away from the other girls and stood facing the “ master.” A collected gasp ran through the crowed.“ You expect me just follow along like your pet or something when I don’t even know your name.” I had never been so bold in my life. But I was still absolutely terrified.

The Master turned to me the lines on his face twitching with irritation. “ You can call me Master or Sir.” He told me sharply. “ Get off the stage!” I saw look of malicious intent upon his face and I decided not to press my luck. I discovered what I had intended though. I had found how short fused he was, especially in front of a crowd. I let myself get ushered away by Lark who had a strained look on her face. Again I brought up the rear as we walked down a side aisle. I heard hurried hisses of whispers as we passed. I guess I gave them something to talk about.

We found seats in the back of the sanctuary and we were forced to sit. I noticed then that there were two fierce looking men that stood at either end of our pew. Like we were really that much of a threat.

We sat there in a row. Lark was on the outside edge of the pew next to the center aisle. I sat next to her and next to me was Amy, Faye, and Kylie, in that order.

“ Was that really necessary,” Asked Amy almost in audibly. I shrugged and was about to reply when the back double doors, that we came through, opened revealing some familiar faces.

onaipwolf I like this story so far. It's interesting and written fairly well. You do have a lot of typos and a few sentence fragments in the beginning, but nothing major. Please let me know if you put up another part. :)
