We got on the bus and I ended up getting seat next to Kylie. Lan and Amy sat right in front of us. I sat in silence for a while as we found ourselves stuck in some traffic. Kylie spent most of her time texting on her cell. I can’t even imagine the long distance bills she was ringing up.

Anyway we were in the bus for a half an hour. I began to wonder how large this city really was. I knew Paris was big but I thought that Mr. Dunmore had said the hotel was close by.

“ How much longer do you think it’s gonna be.” I said to Kylie. She looked at me as she shoved her cell into her back pocket. “ Not sure,” she said. Then suddenly her voice dropped and she began to whisper. “ What do you think of our bus driver?” she asked.

“ I don’t know.” I replied in a whisper. You know how it goes, when one person whispers you just do it back. Its’ just automatic like that I guess. I began to think of our driver. He spoke English but he spoke with an accent. He wasn’t French, he sounded German or so I thought. It didn’t really mean much to me though. “ Why,” I asked Kylie.

She just shrugged. “ something about him just weirds me out.”I chuckled a little and said. “Did you sleep on the plane any?” Kylie didn’t appreciate the comment and rolled her eyes. “ Whatever.” She said.

After that small burst of conversation silence fell and not just between us but it fell over the whole bus as well. I noticed that very few people were still awake. Both chaperones appeared to be out cold and the view of the city was beginning to look like we were leaving the city all together. A surge a nervous energy went through me.

We’re leaving the city. I Thought. Doesn’t anybody else notice?

I looked through the crack in the seats in front of me and I poked Lan on the shoulder.I saw a sliver of his profile glare through at me.“ What?” said Lan sounding really sleepy, which was unusual for him.

“ Something’s wrong.” I said. “ Haven’t you noticed that everyone else is sleeping, and that we are heading out of the city.”

“ How do you know we’re leaving the city.” Replied Lan. I pointed out the window. “ Look the buildings are getting smaller and more spaced.”

He must have noticed then the frightened look in my eyes because something in his expression softened.

“I’ll go talk to Mr. Dunmore.” He said and in getting up I saw he had problems standing. His balance was somehow lost. He fell right back down into his seat.

Just then I heard a hiss of air being released from somewhere. A strange chemical smell filled the air and my sight became hazy. I could hardly see a thing.

“ Lan,” I cried. “ What’s going on?” My eyesight went completely dark. I felt my head hit the window as I fell back into my seat. I the last thing I remember is the breathy whisper of Lan’s voice calling out my name.
