Chapter 3

Elizabeth and I were home and it was nearing dinner so I went down into the kitchen to make myself something to eat. She was doing homework up stairs. I opened the refrigerator door and stuck my head inside searching for some food when I caught a strange scent in the air.  I pulled my head up out of the fridge and I could feel it. A rush of air blew onto my face coming from the basement. Scented of flowers, again. This time I was more bold. I threw that door open and descended those stairs fearlessly. At the bottom of the stairs I flicked on the light. Since the house was so very big the basement was ginormous, as I said earlier. I felt the air flow coming from the right side of me so I went into the right side of the basement. The peculiar thing about the room to the right of the basement was this doorframe. On the wall was a doorframe made out of this fancy old wood, but there was no door, just a frame of wood built over a brick cement wall.

I walked in to the room and if I had been carrying any thing I would have dropped it because there in the doorframe was a field. The breath was knocked out of me as I saw that no longer did the empty doorframe reveal a cement wall but it was now a field of wild flowers. From that field blew the scented breeze that had been tormenting me for weeks.“ No way,” were the only words I could get out.

I saw flowers that I had never seen. In that strange field, the entire place seemed brighter, the sky bluer, the grass greener. I wanted to run into it but for once I decided to think things through, though I don’t know why.

“ Hannah!” I heard Elizabeth’s voice calling me. “ Where are you!?” At first I didn’t want to answer because I really didn’t want her to see my new discovery. But I didn’t have to say anything for her to find me because she saw that the lights were on in the basement. She’s not stupid. I heard the light footed steps of Elizabeth descending the basement stairs and I wondered what to do about the field that was visible from our basement.

“ Ummm...I’m down here” I said as though I didn’t know she was already down with me. I could almost see her eyes rolling as she said. “ No kidding, thanks.” The door opened and she spoke. “ What are you doin.....”

Her words fell flat as she saw what was behind me. She saw the place that filled the once empty doorframe. “ What is going on?” Demanded Elizabeth. I shrugged and told her the truth. “ No idea.” She looked at me glaring intensely. “ Is this some kind of a joke? How are you doing this? Is it some kind of a projection or is it a T.V screen behind there or something?”

“ Nope. “ Was all I told her. “ I doubt it.” She replied looking annoyed. “ So really, how are you doing this? The field looks so real. You even got a flower scented breeze to blow all through the house.”

“ Wait,” I cried. “ You followed the scent?” “ Yeah,” she said looking sideways at me. “ That’s what brought me down here.” Then without speaking she marched right up to the doorframe. She raised her hand to put it against what should have been a firm wall. But there was no wall as I could’ve told her. Her hand went right through the doorframe and into the space that was the field.

A cry of terror echoed through the basement loud and piercing. “ It’s all right Elizabeth.” I cried running up to her and throwing my hand over her mouth to silence her.  “ NO its not!” She cried. “ There’s a field of wild flowers in our basement!”

“ Well, is that such a bad thing?” I said, “ I say we explore it.” I placed my hands on my hips and waited for her reaction. I will not lie I was waiting for her to freak out on me. But to my surprise she didn’t. She just stared in silence for a moment into the field, a waft of air pulsed around us.

“ How do you think it got here?” Said Elizabeth. “ I mean did someone put it here? Or did it just show up by on its own.” “ Eh,” I replied. “ Who cares? “ She looked at me crossly. “ Well things don’t happen by accident, Hannah.” I looked into the field and I realized what she meant. “ I think we should go in.” I said seriously. Elizabeth didn’t look at me when she said, “ Do you think its safe?”

“ I’ve no idea,” I said. She thought for a moment and then turned to me. “ Well we can’t go exploring in our socks.” She said almost sounding cheery. “ Let’s go get some shoes on and then we can go in.”

TO be honest, I would’ve gone in even if she hadn’t gone with me. But this way was easier and it means that I wouldn’t have her harping at me about it later. We both ran up stairs and got our shoes. Unbeknown to Elizabeth I also grabbed some matches and a small sheathed dagger which I had bought when I was a freshman. Mom had a cow, but I was able to keep it so long as I never unsheathed it.

We both met down in the basement now with shoes on. I noticed that Elizabeth was trembling a little, but whether it was from fear or excitement I couldn’t tell.

“ Here we go. “ I cried. “ Let’s roll.” Elizabeth turned to me with one eyebrow raised. “ Let’s roll. “ she said. “ You’re a dork.” “ well excuse me” I replied vastly irritated. “ What would you say your highness? “ She let out an “ugh” of disgust, “ Let’s just go already.“

“ Fine with me.” I replied.  And together we stepped through the doorway to a place we never would’ve thought to be real.
