Chapter 2
So there I was home alone on a Saturday. Outside the sky was stormy, cold, and wet and most definitely not dry. Elizabeth was off doing something or other for school and mom and dad went to go visit my grandpa who lived an hour away. I basically had the whole day to myself to do whatever I wanted. Though I didn’t have a car at this point I could still have free reign of the house. With all this freedom I could think of a million things to do with it, but most of these involved either a car or going outside. And I could do neither because my lack of vehicle and because of the stupid weather. I was stranded inside a drafty old house alone. I ran through my options pretty quick. In the morning I played on the Internet, read some of a book and watched some TV while eating lunch. By the after noon I was bored out of my mind. I was itching to do something but what? That’s when I got the brilliant idea to go explore the house.
Now I’m sure you’re thinking, “ O a girl home alone explores a big weird house during a storm and discovers Narnia in her closet, “ But that’s not even close to what happened to me. In fact, nothing happened to me. This house was just a normal house. I explored the main floor and discovered mousetraps in every corner, thrilling. On the second floor I found that the spare bedroom closet leads to Elizabeth’s bedroom closet, intriguing.
Next I went to the attic, only somehow I ended up on the roof. Weird huh? Since it was raining outside, I got really wet. I was not happy about that, but I toughed it out. After getting out of the rain I gave up exploring and went to get dry. I came out into the hallway after changing cloths and decided to go back down stairs to watch a movie or something. In the hallway, I felt it. One of those drafts came out of nowhere rushing gently against me. It smelled like flowers. I tried to ignore it but as I walked down the hall and descended the stairs, it just got stronger. I figured I was coming closer to the drafts origin. So I followed it.
I was lead to the door in the kitchen that took you down into the basement. I stopped there. Now I am a brave girl, but to go down into the dark creepy basement on a stormy day when home alone just seemed like asking to be jumped by some creep waiting to knife you from somewhere in the shadows. I hate to say it but I chickened out. I went into the living room and turned on the TV. The draft subsided shortly after taking the flowery scent with it. I ended up falling asleep in front of the TV but was awoken a little later by my sister slugging me in the face with a pillow.
“ Why?!” I cried bolting up from my slumber. She didn’t answer my question but simple placed her hands on her hips as though she were my mother and said, “ Did you just watch TV all day?” she sighed and nodded her head. “ Honestly Hannah, you’re so lazy.” I rolled my eyes and she walked away to go do home work or whatever she does.
The rest of the day held nothing of interest. Mom and Dad got home from grandpas bringing dinner with them. It continued to rain throughout the rest of the night but by the next morning it had stopped. The rest of the week was pretty average. Mom and Dad did though announced that in two weeks they would be going on vacation to Disneyland. They’d be gone for two weeks. Woo-hoo. But that Elizabeth and I would not be going. They were going for their anniversary, but why they chose Disneyland is beyond me. Honestly I didn’t care to go, but my sister was a little annoyed that she was not being included. She spent the next few days pouting but I just laughed at her.
When the big day came for the parents to leave, they gave Elizabeth and I a big lecture about getting along, and not purposefully spiting one another. They said that we should look out for each other and help each other out. After that they gave us each twenty bucks for food and headed out the door. Once they left Elizabeth and I parted ways in silence and only spoke to each other if necessary. All was well in the house for the first few days but by the next Friday things got weird once again.
