Angel chapter 2
|
-I saw eternity the other night-Like a great ring of pure and endless light- And round beneath it-Time in hours, days, years-Driven by the spheres- Like a vast shadow moved in which the world- And all her train was hurled-
-Henry Vauhgen-
-“ See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you into the place I have prepared. Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion cause my Name is in him. If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you.”
Exodus 23: 20-22
Chapter 2
Weeks went by, and life for me was as before. All was as it should have been, except now I felt a constant lingering sensation that I was being watched, and not only by my angel. By “ my angel,” I mean Kyan. That is what I found myself calling him. How could he be anything else? I had always known that supernatural forces played a main part in the world, but never had anything unusual happened to me before that night. That night still lived on in my memory as though it had just happened yesterday. Not a day went by when I didn’t think about it, but when I did think of that darkness and that rider I shuddered. Because if Kyan was an angel then that would mean the rider was his opposite. And that is what really frightened me.
I didn’t forget Kyan’s warning to be on guard. I kept his dagger close by when I was at home, especially at night. It seemed that I had a newfound reverence for the darkness and I fought even harder to not go out alone after the sun had set. I waited and watched for something to happen or for some contact with Kyan to take place but nothing happened. The world went quiet as if trying to convince me that the whole thing had merely been a dream. Honestly though, if I didn’t have Kyan’s dagger I would’ve probably thought it all had been a dream (but dreams don’t give you shiny daggers). But despite the weeks that have passed, and my mind trying to tell me that it wasn’t real, I knew that something had started that night and that there was still a long way to go.
It was now August, school had just started and I had told no one about being attacked by the rider or meeting Kyan, for obvious reasons. Every day I looked out the window to look for Kyan atop the water tower, or I glanced that way out the car window on my way to school. I could never see him clearly but I knew he was there. I could feel him.He was there waiting for something, but I just didn’t know what. A part of me didn’t want to find out cause I knew it couldn’t be good, but I guess that really couldn’t be helped.
I woke up on a Friday morning at the end of August. Opening my eyes was a struggle because it just didn’t feel like I should be waking up. Outside my window the sky was dark making the morning seem earlier than usual and I did not want to get out of bed. Mom knocked on my door several times insisting that I “move it!” before I was late, so begrudgingly I got out of bed and got ready for school. Apparently the sun had risen though you could barely tell and a thick massive layer of cloud had decided to settle up in the sky promising storms later on during the day. I could just tell that it was gonna be a long dark day simply because I was ready for a nap by the time I had gotten into my car to go to school.
The day went by slowly with no unusual occurrences other than the dark stormy weather that sent a downpour of rain upon the whole area. After school I went home, did homework, and all that, the usual school day routine. By about four the rain stopped. Mom suggested that I take the dog to go potty while it wasn’t raining. SO I leashed up the dog and went outside on that dark day.
Stepping into the yard, an uneasy feeling shot through me. Maybe it was the weather that was making me edgy but something didn’t feel right. The sensation of being watched grew and I could only stand in the yard praying that the dog would do her business quickly so that I could go back inside.
Then out of the corner of my eye I saw a black blur of movement. Something was very close. I saw it again, only from my other side. I realized that there must be more than one thing in the yard with me.
My dog began to then act crazy like when she sensed the rider’s coming that first night. She pulled the leash free of my grip and ran off again towards the house. Everything grew instantly darker.“ Not again!” My mind screamed.
This time I didn’t waist a second I bolted towards the house following after my dog. It was a great effort on my part, I’m sure of that. I might actually have gotten away if it hadn’t been for the fact that I tripped.“Crap! I’m never wearing flip-flops again.”On the ground once again, I saw shadowy shapes appear out of absolutely nowhere. They were all dressed like the rider but their faces were hidden from me. I wondered if they even had faces.
Despite my fear I found myself able to stand this time. To be honest, as much as I was afraid, I was also quite annoyed. I picked up nearest object that I could find, which was a stick, and threw it at one of the approaching figures. They surrounded me.“ Get Away!” I screamed at them all.All the shadowy figures remained silent, and suddenly in unison each drew out a long sword. Now, I was really, really afraid.
I stood there trembling praying hard for some rescuer. Praying for Kyan to come to my rescue. I looked up at the water tower, but he wasn’t there. I couldn’t see him nor could I feel him. This time I had to face the darkness by myself. I was alone. I stood no chance. I was out numbered. I fell to my knees in fear and defeat. I don’t want to die. I thoughtTears came from inside me running over my cheeks and I clenched my fists. Words rose in my throat that I couldn’t suppress.“ HELP ME!”
I screamed with all the power and feeling that I possessed.
The ground shook and a strange warmth filled the air. I herd the shuffle of feet stepping backward. The dark surrounding figures had stepped back. I looked up into the sky and I saw the dark layer of clouds break open as the sun shot arrows of bright consuming light down to the earth. The shadows that surrounded me broke apart and the figures vanished as the sun began loosening the hold of the clouds that clung to the sky. Quickly I got up and ran into the house. I shut myself up into my room for the rest of the evening just trying to wrap my head around what had just happened.
I had been saved. But by what I wasn’t sure, though I knew it was no coincidence that the sun broke through at that moment.I wondered if it was Kyan but it didn’t feel like him. He had power, I knew that much, but this was something else. This was something more powerful. Unlike when I met Kyan this made me feel ill at ease. It was so powerful, I wondered if it was safe. I wondered if I could trust it. It had saved me. But still I couldn’t feeling wary of something so strong that it could cause the sun to act as it had.
I had so many questions. I wished Kyan would contact me so that I could tell him all my concerns. I wondered how much longer I had to wait. I spent the whole evening pacing back and forth in my bedroom, to the point where I was exhausted. I went to sleep around ten O’clock but my dreams were troubling and I found little rest.
A chill swept into my room. My eyes flew open from their sleep, my mind was instantly alert and I didn’t move. Something inside me said to lay quiet, and I obeyed. I wasn’t alone. I heard the sound of breathing looming above my bed. One of the shadowy figures from this afternoon had come for me.
Next I heard the ring of steel as it was drawn. Whatever was with me was armed and ready to strike. Slowly and silently I slipped my hand under my pillow. Feeling for Kyan’s dagger with a trembling hand, I grasped it tightly with my fingers. I was acting on impulses and instincts that I didn’t know I had.
The sound of an inhale somehow let me know that he was about to strike. In a burst of energy I fearlessly slid off my bed, out from under the covers, just as he thrust his blade into my pillow where my head had been only seconds before. I landed at the feet of my attacker, and without thinking I rolled behind him. Jumping to my feet I, with two hands held firmly to the dagger, stabbed the attacker in the heart.
He cried out but this time the shrieking didn’t pain me like it had before. I tore the dagger from his flesh and cried.“Get Away!”The fatally wounded attacker spun around and looked at me with spiteful anger. He was astounded that I would have the nerve to banish him. He fell to the ground at my feet and I jumped back putting a distance between us. A black sphere of power formed around him and a great wind began pulling my room apart. But I stood firm.
I stood unmoved as I watched the darkness swirl around him. “ This isn’t over!” Was all I heard as he disappeared into nothingness.
“I’ve done it!” I thought. “I have fought him off on my own.”“No, not on my own” I suddenly remembered whose dagger I was holding. “Thank you, Kyan.” I looked out the window up at the stars. The night seemed so peaceful. Next I looked around my room. The place was a mess, it was a wonder that no one in my house had woken up. I wondered how they could have not noticed any of what just happened. “Am I the only one who can see and hear what is going on?” I thought. “ I know that this isn’t a dream. It can’t be.”Looking down I saw a big black stain on the carpet floor in my room. Then I saw that the same thing was on the blade of the dagger. My stomach heaved, and I went to my knees. It was blood.A wave of bitter remorse came over me. “I killed him.” I had never killed anything beyond the bird I hit with my car, and that was an accident. I have killed bugs too but this felt different. To me it was different. I didn’t understand this sense of compassion that overtook me. The thing that attacked me was evil. It wanted only to take my life. I had acted purely in self-defense. “But is that a just reason to kill?”
I just sat there on my floor for a little while replaying things in my head over and over. Eventually I remembered how late or early it must be. I clicked on a light and began rummaging through the disaster site that was my room looking for my clock. I found it underneath my dresser. The clock read 3:47 a.m. surprisingly I wasn’t tired. In fact I was very much awake. There would be no hope of sleep for me, at least not for a while. My brain was completely wired and my pulse was still trying to settle.I collapsed onto my bed. “ This is getting ridiculous, I really want some answers.” I said aloud. “ Yeah, I’m talking to you Kyan.” I don’t know why I brought up his name, or why I was talking to myself, but I did. And oddly enough I think he heard me because that is when I heard a tap tap tap on my window.
I jolted up dagger still in hand. Despite all I had seen thus far I was still very surprised by what I saw perched outside my window. It was a falcon. It was a little falcon with silver wings. I knew at once that this bird was special because it had the same light in its eyes that Kyan had. The bird and I stared at one another for a moment and then I realized that it wanted me to let it in.
Now this might have been poor reasoning on my part but I thought that the falcon was just so cute. I thought that something this adorable couldn’t evil, right? Well even though my reasons were shallow my assumption of its not being evil was correct.
I opened the window and the falcon flew in and landed in my dresser. It stuck out its foot at me. I saw a piece of paper tied around his leg. I cautiously approached the bird, eying its sharp beak and talons, and I retrieved the message from its foot.As soon as I had the message in hand the bird took off in a jolt of speed. It flew out my window and out of sight before I could even say thank you.
I was very much intrigued by the note and I really wanted to know who it was from, so naturally I opened it.And here is what it said.
-The path between the worlds has been opened. You have taken a stand against the darknessAnd you have defeated it. It is now time for you to make a choiceTo go or to stay. Will you come with me leaving behind the things you know?Or will you stay as you are, ending your newly discovered sight? If you do choose to goThen go out into the field beyond your back yard at first light. Be on guard Follow the lightNo matter how broad or narrow the path may be.Don’t be afraid Those of the light are never alone. After this is done I shall come to youAnd the second part shall begin. Its up to you to decideChoose well.”- -Kyan This note left me completely dumb founded. It was so vague about so much, and kind of dramatic too. “What did he mean by saying I had a choice to make?” I thought. “If I went out at dawn would I ever be able to come back? What did he mean by follow the light?” I was so confused and troubled. Mostly by the ultimatum he had placed before me. I could either abandon all that I knew facing the uncertainty of whether or not I would ever see my family and friends again. Or I could just ignore the truth about all that has happened to me and go on as if it never happened. The note said that if I didn’t go then I wouldn’t be able to see the thing I could now. ”Would that mean no more Kyan?” I didn’t want to not be able to see him again. But then again it would also mean that I would no longer be attack at odd hours of the night. There were so many things to consider and I was utterly torn in all directions.
I looked at the clock seeing how long I had left to make my choice. I didn’t know how I was ever going to make this decision.“ Give me a sign!” I said thinking about how well it had worked out the last time I had talked aloud to myself. “ Anything would be wonderful.”I flopped down on the floor in a huff and stretched out on my back despite the debris that was scattered everywhere. I looked to my right and there right next to my face was my Bible, open, face up.It was opened to the book of Exodus, chapter 23.I glanced down at the page and the first three verses I read were these.
“ See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you into the place I have prepared. Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion cause my Name is in him. If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you.”
If that’s not a sign then I don’t know what is.
It was settled. I had made my choice. I would go with Kyan. A part of me felt bad that I wouldn’t be letting my parents know where I was going but this decision just felt right. This was something I had to do. Maybe it was something I was meant to do.
Anyways I spent the rest of the hours until dawn figuring out what to take with me. First though I changed cloths, jeans, T, and a hoodie, because I was not about to go running around outside in my pajamas. Next I decided that I would take my small Bible and put it in my purse/side-shoulder bag. My sister got it for me in Mexico and it can fit a lot of stuff. Obviously I was taking the dagger and along with that I took a tooth brush/toothpaste, a small note book and some pens, my MP-3 player (gotta have my music), my digital camera, and some granola bars. I was already to go, and all I had left to do was wait.
The time was now approaching. The first signs of dawn had begun to show in the dark early morning sky. I put on a pair of socks before leaving my room and as silently as I could I crept downstairs. I put on my tennis shoes and opened the sliding glass door that led to the back deck. I sincerely hoped that my mom and dad wouldn’t hear me or wake up. I would hate to have to explain all this to them. That wouldn’t be fun.
So anyway I stepped out onto the deck and felt the chill of the morning air. I began to descend the steps out into yard, just as the sun peaked over the corns fields. As the light stretched across the land I saw a glimmering path open before me leading out into the field. There in front of me in the dewy grass was a path of light shinning bright though all else in the yard was still quite dark.
The words, “ follow the light,” echoed in my head I began walking the path. It was so broad at first but as I slowly tread this road it became smaller and smaller. I began to look around and the farther away from the house I got the darker it seemed to get. Now all around me was pitch black. Soon the only thing illuminating my vision was the path. Despite my sudden apprehension I continued walking, but I started to hear noises coming from the darkness just out of my vision. I heard the sounds of heavy breathing, clanking metal, rustling footsteps, and eerie whispering voices on either side of me. All the things in the darkness were watching me. I stopped walking.“ I could turn back.” I thought
At this thought I turned my head looking backwards. The road was still there, looking broader and safer. Turning back round I looked ahead. It only got narrower, and I couldn’t even see where it led.“ Was it worth it.” I thought doubtfully. Suddenly something in me snapped and I clenched my fists in resilience and determination.
“ Of course its worth it.” My mind screamed.
I took as big a stride as I could and pressed on again. I would have run but the path was so narrow now that I couldn’t while maintain my balance. I didn’t want to stumble and fall off the path. I would not turn back but that is what the things in the darkness wanted. All around me voices began to rise muttering something I couldn’t understand and I’m not sure that I wanted to. The very sound of it made my skin crawl. The path was now only as wide as my foot. And my progression was slowed even more. I stuck my arms out beyond the light into the dark to keep my balance and my fingers brushed against something. I was startled and about fell over, but if managed to save myself. I heard a few cackling laughs from somewhere off in the darkness.“ You’ll never make at this rate.” Cried a voice. “ You’re gonna fall.”I ignored the voice. I looked straight ahead and that is when I saw it for the first time. I saw where the path led. Only a few yards away there was a great ring of light. Shinning bright and pure, in the darkness that was all around. Excitement rose within me and my pace quickened. I had to get there. The taunts and jeers of the darkness didn’t cease but I no longer heard them. All I cared about now was reaching the light. I was so close.
I was now feet away when I jumped. I threw myself into the ring of light and my feet never even touched the ground. The light completely engulfed me and everything seemed to stop.
I was not breathing.I was not moving.I wasn’t even thinking.I was somehow in-between all of these things. I was in a place where I could only just be. In this place I merely existed.I saw nothing but light, light in brilliant colors that swirled endlessly before my eyes, and all around me was quiet.Until a voice broke the silence. It was a females voice, I could tell that much. It sounded wise and aged, though not old, but also very familiar. The voice though was not in the physical out side world. It was not audible in the physical sense, but it was in my head. Every word that was spoken echoed through my mind, bouncing back and forth in my brain. And I remember every word.
-“ Don’t be afraid-You are a wielder of great power-A power greater than all the darkness-But only if you come to understand it- The darkness will twist your ignorance-And try to deceive you-But do not waver-Do not be afraid-Forsake not the way of the light- You have been chosen- to drive back the darkness-Kyan will help you-Trust him always-Btu do not follow blindly-Question everything-Trust nothing save the light- Keep your sword always ready-Learn well-Fight hard-Keep to the light -Do not be afraid-You are never alone- Purity, courage, compassion, wisdom, faith,-And strength of heart-Wield these along with your sword- And you shall not fail- You are the one- Who will drive back the darkness ”-
As soon as these words were spoken the light faded and I fell to the ground. The great light was gone as well as the great darkness. The sun was just barely in the sky. I sat there on the wet dewy grass my brain buzzing trying to comprehend all of what had just happened, and what was going to happen next. “ Kate,” said a voice from behind taking me by surprise.I spun round ready to draw the dagger from my bag. It was Kyan.He smiled at me and said, “ Its to see that you’re on guard.”He stuck out his hand in efforts to bring me up off the ground and I accepted it.Standing there I faced him looking him right in the face. “ I want to do it.” I said. “ I want to help you fight.”Kyan’s face turned serious, and he put his hands on my shoulders and turned me to face the other way, my back to him.Next he whispered in my ear. “ Look up,”
I did as he asked. Looking up I saw something glimmering, coming through the sky. It was falling whatever it was, and was going to land near us.
Like a bolt of silver lightning this shinning object came down a few yards away. As it hit the earth the ground shook a little and at first the thing was not visible. For a few moments misty clouds of shimmering smoke clung to the area around the fallen object.
“ What is it?” I asked Kyan. He didn’t answer but he turned me back around to face him.“ This is your last chance,” he said. “ You can turn back here. You can go home and forget all of this.” “ NO I can’t.” I said instantly pulling away from him.“ Alright,” he replied. ”the choice is made. Go to it.”I assumed he meant the thing that had fallen from the sky so I instantly turned back around. The smoke had cleared and now I could see clearly what it really was. It was a sword. It was like Kyan’s only smaller. I went over to it and grasped the hilt. As soon as I touched I knew it was meant for me.
“ Draw it out.’ I heard Kyan say.He didn’t have to tell me again. I with both hand pulled the sword out of the ground. The force of the pull sent the sword above my head. I almost dropped it.“ This sword is yours,” I heard Kyan whisper into my ear from behind. “ Hold to it firmly, its time now.”I didn’t know what he meant by “its time now,” but I wouldn’t get to find out until later. I felt him squeeze my shoulder and a great flash of light impaired my sight. I felt myself falling backward and that’s when everything went dark.
