Piracy and it’s Princess

In an age long ago, the world was just a vast playground for warriors, kings, thieves, and wanderers of many kinds, all trying to make their way in the world. There were many different races, clans, nations, and occupations. Few of these people ever found a way to coexist, which is why there was always much bloodshed and war between the different nations.

Some of them though went to great measures to stay away from each other and keep hidden so as to live a life of peace. But few were successful. For as the years went on more and more blank edges of the map were being filled in and there were fewer and fewer places that one could exist in secret and peace.

A pirate’s life was never one of peace but what was the thrill in peace. In the age of expansion and exploration Pirates ruled the oceans plundering and thieving their way to riches, renown, and often times death. They sailed on some of the fastest sailing ships, and were a terror to honest sailors because of their superb nautical skills and knowledge of the seas where they roamed. Some say that the sea was bent to their will and that Pirates could send out hurricanes upon those who displeased them. That was untrue of course, but the Pirates certainly weren’t going to tell anyone any different.

A pirate though thieving and greedy was not though completely devoid of heart. For many a pirate had a deep love of the sea and some even had family, but there was only one pirate who dare bring that family aboard ship.

Captain Henry Carl Morgan Howl the third, was one of the fiercest pirates in the whole world.  He was an excellent fighter and ran a very tight ship but for all his strengths he had but one weakness, his daughter Keira. His wife had died when the little girl was only seven and since that time Captain Howl had raised his daughter aboard the ship.

Keira was a charming girl and as she grew up the whole crew ended up falling as madly love with her as her father. If ever there was such a thing as pirate royalty she would have been the princess. For even though she spent the better half of he life amongst filthy, rum soaked sailors she maintained the manners her mother had taught her in her youth and was always reading so as to better herself.

She grew to be a cunning girl of quick wit, a compassionate heart and an independent spirit fiery and unafraid of confrontation. Her skin was a light brown, tanned from a life aboard ship in the sun, her hair as well was enhanced by the sun being chestnut brown with slightly gold highlights. Her eyes though were her truly marvelous feature, for they were the perfect almond shape of her mother’s but with the bright green color that was the exact shade as her fathers’. She hardly ever wore shoes and only reached the height of about five feet and four inches, which she was constantly reminded by the crew. All of whom treated her as a little sister or niece and they would pick on her most of the time but that was only when she wasn’t picking on them.

Keira Howl loved her life at sea and could never dream of spending a life stuck on land but sometimes the future holds for us what we could never dream. And for a pirate futures are often what you least expect them to be.

“ How much time do we have?” Asked Captain Howl to his first-mate Mr. Chauce.

The captain gazed upon his first-mate anxiously and then turned his attention back to the map that lay out on the table between them.

A bottle of rum sat next to his hand, it’s contents swaying with every rocking of the ship. The captain didn’t even notice the movement he’d been at sea so long but tonight not the sea nor treasures of gold or rubies interested him. His thoughts were for one thing. His most cherished treasure was in danger, and what he needed was land.

“ We left the port a good full day ahead. IF they figured our heading they’d be on us in about a day.”

“ How many?”

“ That’s the real trouble, captain,” Mr. Chauce hated to tell him the news but he knew he had to. “ There’s more than just navy men come’ in after us....” The first mate went silent.

“ Well...get on with it!” Demanded the captain feeling extremely short tempered this evening.

“ Captain Lefaye is rumored to be prowling these waters.”

Mr. Chauce’s voice became low. “ He’ s look’ in for you......... he wants revenge.”

Captain Howl for a moment felt a twinge of fear, but not for himself.

Nine years ago Captain Lefaye and Captain Howl got into a brawling fight at an inn. Both completely drunk but there came a moment when Lefaye had the upper hand and was about to run Howl through the gut with his sword. Keira came to her father’s rescue and ended up slicing off the middle and pointer fingers of Lefaye’s right hand. Captain Howl used that moment of distraction to knock out Lefaye. By the time Lefaye awoke the next morning Captain Howl had already left port. Lefaye was completely outraged that he had been thwarted by a little eleven-year-old girl, and he vowed to take revenge on both Captain Howl and his daughter Keira.

“I won’t let him have her!” thought Howl. He was on the run from the royal navy and now a rival pirate captain who has a lust for the blood of his daughter. He knew he had to get Keira to safety but he knew not where.

“ We need someplace close to drop her off until we’ve shook off our pursuers.”

“ You’re just gonna drop her off?” Cried Mr. Chauce quite astounded by the idea. “ I don’t think she’ll take being marooned on some spot of land, she’ll be completely....”

His words were cut short. “ She’ll take what I give her and do as she’s told!” Snapped Howl. “ Even if she has to be gagged and bound. This is for her own good. I am her father after all”

“ Yes,” muttered Mr. Chauce. “ And she’s a pirate.”

“ What was that?” Demanded Howl.

“ Nothing Sir.” Cried Mr. Chauce anxiously.

Captain Howl eyed his first mate suspiciously. “ Don’t you tell her a word of this. Or I’ll tell her it was all your idea.”

Mr. Chauce looked a little a nerved and hastily replied. “ Aye, sir. I won’t tell her a thing.”

“ Good.” Said Captain Howl. “Back to your duties, and tell me if any secure land comes into sight.”

“ Aye. Sir.” Was all Mr. Chauce said as he left the captain’s quarters. He hoped that Keira would not question him about the meeting with her father. He was never very good at keeping secrets from her. And he really didn’t want to be the one to tell her the plans her father had for her. He didn’t even want to picture that reaction. “Women are so temperamental.” He thought as he went about his business. “ It’s no wonder why most crews forbid women on their ships, if there were any more women aboard this vessel it’d be like sailing with hurricane in your hull.”

He chuckled to himself but was silenced by the sight of Keira walking towards him with a slight sparkle in her pretty green eyes. He knew, that she knew, that he knew something that she didn’t. She wanted to know what he knew. And she always got what she wanted.
