Out Singing the Storm

Creative Created on 7-8-07 Views(41) Story Rating G

Out Singing the Storm The usual Thursday camp routine was playing out as expected until game time when the whole camp went out into the game field. In the sky hung a giant gray pillar of cloud looming above looking as it were about to fall and crush us at any moment. It was that cloud that drew my attention to the sky where I saw that the cloud was not alone. Behind it and all around it were a vast plain of dark clouds heading our way. Obviously there was a storm coming.  We started the game hoping to finish before the storm came but we did not. Lighting began to flash rapidly and numerously a little ways off in the distance so we all congregated in the chapel. Alton started up a game but no game could distract any one for the long because the storm grew. Lightning flashed, thunder growled, and rain fell and it fell hard. The storm was big and we were stuck in the middle of it. Surprisingly I was not afraid, I for whatever reason was at peace with the whole situation, but there were a few who were scared. The ones who were scared sat on the platform in the front of the chapel getting comfort from Mary Beth.Sometime after the game three girls, Katie, Taylor, and Brandy went up to Taco and asked him to play the song " How Great is Our God" on the guitar. Taco agreed and Catherine, Mary Beth, Anna, Ash, the three girls and myself all began to sing along with Taco as he played. The song ended and we chose another song. Then another. The storm outside got worse it even hailed for while. The lightning continued to flash, the rain still fell hard, and the thunder clapped, but this didn't affect our songs. We sang and more people joined our group. With more voices our singing was becoming a force to contend with. I leaned over to my friend Amanda and said " We're gonna out sing this storm." She laughed and nodded. That was how it all started. We decided after a while of singing to sing " How Great is Our God" again, only this time we had both Guy and Taco playing guitar and Mary Beth played an egg shaker (named Jim). During the second singing of the chorus the light suddenly clicked off. Screams were echoed through the chapel and the lightning flashed came from all directions but our song didn't waver for a moment. We sang in the darkness. The lights flicked back on and we sang. The lights flicked off again and we still sang. The lights went on again and we still sang. Finally the lights went out and stayed out but we still sang. Anna whipped out her pocketknife with flashlight and illuminated the sheet music so the songs could continue and there in the darkness the group of singers increased.I was told the next morning that the singing was so loud that most people couldn't tell how close or far away the storm was. We were louder than the thunder as we sang every praise and worship song we could think of.We sang maybe for about an hour and a half to two hours when we were made to go into the dining hall for the " camp fire"(two candles in the middle of the dinning hall). There we sang a number of camp happy songs and after that it was time for camper testimony time. The song time in the chapel affected all who were involved I'm sure but these few stood up and spoke about it. Natalie found peace that comes only from God, Chris was able to literally experience praising God in the storm, and I saw the power of the saints. The "camp fire time" ended with prayer. The entire camp held hands and stood in a circle-ish formation. We were all connected; we were the body of Christ united as we always should be, and when the prayer ended, as soon as Tim the director said amen the lights clicked back on. I'm pretty sure that no one could hold back a smile. I had a strange feeling as I got back to the cabin. Before turning the lights off one of my cabin councilors whose name was Bobby spoke. She put into words all that I had been feeling. She said that this night made her think of the underground church, and how they would sing and meet in the dark. She said that tonight God was pleased with us. God was pleased with us. We all experienced God that night. He manifested his power in more ways than just the storm. I believe that God was not going to rest until every single soul at camp saw and experienced Him like they never had before. A few found him in the beginning, some in the middle, and some at the very end when the “ amen “ was said. But I know that no went away from that night without seeing God’s sovereignty, power, and awesomeness.

I will never forget that night.

Seraph311 You forgot to mention that they screamed all three times. You would think that after the second time that they would have been conditioned to whatever fear they may have been fealing. It made me so mad. I may have screamed back if I hadn't been so occupied with the song.
