"Are you ready?"
"Of course not," I said to my brother Jon, "I will never be ready to leave everything behind. All of my planned future, my friends, and worse, you" The government came up with this idea for all of those who weren't sick. There weren't many, but there was some. They figured the people who weren't sick didn't want to be around their friends so they were going to send them somewhere else. They called it Shaney. Whenever it came up in a conversation, most people would say "Lucky" underneath their breath. But it wasn't. How was I lucky? Jon was all I had and soon, I will have nobody. Jon has Kalabraker too. Along with all my other peers. He took me in to get tested a couple days ago. It was negative. While everyone was on the death list to hell, I was going to Shaney.
"You know you have to do it sometime" He said coughing in between words. I got used to not understanding half of what he was saying, he didn't stop coughing. His coughing this time resulted in him heaving his leftover stale sandwich. It's not like it was out of the ordinary. The train, that I have been dreading, pulled up to tracks and looked to ordinary to be the one that would take me away. This is the first day of hell. I looked back at Jon to see him leaning over heaving the last bit of his sandwich. He had gotten skinnier. He never used to be like this. He used to be very muscle tone with a brown wavy hair. It's flat now. They say this disease seems to ruin your hair. It takes out any volume that you ever had.
"Jon?" He looked up and I looked in his innocent blood-shot eyes. It'd be the last time I'll ever see them.
"Yeah?"
"It's here"
"So this is the day"
"I'll miss you" He put his arms around me and we just stood there. For a minute or so. I couldn't let this happen to me even though I couldn't stop it.
"Ana, I love you" He said with his eyes feeling with tears. I had to look away. I can't watch people cry. I put my left foot on one stair and my right foot on the other and repeated the steps until I got to an open room for me to sit alone. Because thats what I am now. I have no more family. Jon was all I had and he's gone now. Too bad I can't just die right now. The whole rest of the world is dying, why can't I? The train started chugging at a slow pace just waiting to sped up until after the first chug, the train had been ordered to stop. Someone was late. Shocker. It was like they were trying to make it more painful than it already was. The man finally got on and they started to chugging. My room door opened. It was the guy.Great. He had a smile on his face like he was happy he was leaving. He was a blonde pretty boy like one of those jocks where all the girls drool over.
"Hi. My name is Rob"
"Yeah, what's your point" I said in a tone that no mother would've wanted to hear.
"I'm just trying to make acquaintence. So what's your name" Jerk. He's probably trying to get something out of me. I'm not falling for that, again.
"I don't have a name" I said in a stubborn way.
"Alright, if you don't have a name, I'll call you Jan" He said winking at me like we go way back.
"Why Jan?"
"I have my reasons"
