Music of the Mind (Installment 7)

"Hey.. you, come on, ya gotta get up."
A voice, from nowhere, smooth, soft. Tentative.
A much younger version of Merideth stirred, shaking and weak from her encounter with her Mom. Wondering where she was, she looked around, taking note of where the sun was, to try to remember what happened last. A habit learned long ago, from the start of her Mom's violent episodes, an instinct that's helped her keep track of herself. Always check the time, make sure you know what time it is. Right before a flying rage began, checking the watch. After realizing it was only noon, she also realized something else- she actually made it outside this time before passing out, she had gotten there on her own. She looked around to her human alarm clock, grateful for his kindness, and even more grateful when she caught sight of his face.
It had started then, watching his face light up when their eyes met, seeing the warmth spread from them, shining, radiating good will, but a very noticable touch of rebellion as well.
"What happened?" He asked, holding out his hand for her to take hold of for balance, as she was trying to stand, with difficulty.
".. Nothing unusual really.. " She averted her eyes as he helped her keep her balance. He took this as an obvious sign that he shouldn't intrude- and that if she wanted him to know she'd come to him. He settled for simply asking her for her name instead after that.
"Merideth.. thank you... " she said, pausing after thank you, waiting for his name.
"It's Brett, and you're most welcome, I was happy to help." That smile again, charming and honest. She smiled back, without even trying. She thought, looking back to this moment, that maybe that's what started their deep bond, she had wondered just what kind of good thing she'd done to deserve to meet such a good person. She didn't even know why, but suddenly she was hopeful, wishful again, thinking of a better life, thinking that things would get better.. she hadn't ever felt like that prior to that day, in the twelve years of her existance. She thought about that day.. every day, in her worst moments. It had been cropping up in her thoughts more and more lately, since her thoughts had taken a recent, very dangerous turn.
