Escape Ch.2
Tirzah cried as her father and Ruel argued. Ruel blamed her for helping him get away. Her father defended her even when her mother came in.
"Silence Yocheved! This is not your place. Miriam and Yocheved, get out!"
They bowed their heads and walked out. Ruel sat down, Yaakov looked at him.
"I am your father. You respect me when I speak. Tirzah kept you from murder. No harm was done. I will talk to her. You go and get out. I don't want to see you until you learn to respect me."
Ruel left, Tirzah still in tears.
"Tirzah...Come here."
She walked over to her father. He sat her down and made her look at him.
"Why did you help that man leave?"
"He was standing there, I feared for him. Ruel was going to kill him."
"You did well...Next time, bring him to me. He didn't touch you?"
"No...No...he was hearing me sing."
She smiled. He held her in his arms, stroking her curls.
"Go rest. Now I must calm Yocheved and make sure she keeps quiet.
Azriel
He stood still as his leader yelled at him for not completing the task.
"Foolish! Sloppy! You didn't kill him over a girl?!"
"No, I didn't kill him because she led me out of the house."
"No excuses! Go back and do the task I have given you!"
His leader stormed out of the room, Azriel finally breathing.Tirzah...He would go back, but not for Ruel. For Her.....
Tirzah began her day as usual, making some kind of food. something was better than nothing. Her mother and sister were gone for the day, her brothers as well. Her father was at the palace, settling business. She left everything prepared, walking into the courtyard. She took her veil and let it fall at her feet. She sang to herself, dancing and spinning. She raised her hands to the sky.
O Yaweh....If only...If only he would return...
She shook her head, smiling. She took her veil and wrapped it around herself. She laid down on the rug, looking up at the sky.
Azriel crept up into the house, he saw her laying down, he could hear her voice. He crept up to her, kneeling beside her. She smiled.
"You have returned stranger. "
"I came back for you."
She laughed.
"For me? But have you not come to kill Ruel?"
He figured Ruel had told her.
"Yes and no. Do you know who I am?"
"Yes. Azriel, the great assassin."
"You laugh at me?"
"No, but I think for a great assassin, you let a girl interfere with your task at hand."
She sat up.
"Do you enjoy it?"
"What?"
"Do you enjoy it? Killing people, anyone just because someone tells you so."
"Sometimes."
"Don't you think of ever leaving this and finding life elsewhere?"
"For a maiden you speak of things most think as unlady-like."
"Answer me."
He smiled.
"Of course. Marry, have children, all those things."
She stood up and motioned for him to follow her. She led him into the house, he sat down at the table.
"I assume you haven't found a girl to follow your constant moving about, one that can handle seeing you come home covered in blood."
He ate the food she handed him, nodding his head.
"I thought I did once."
"Yes? What happened?"
"She married a scribe."
Tirzah laughed, sitting down next to him. He smiled, Tirzah was so different.
"Does money matter to you?"
"No, I want love."
"You're a strange girl."
"And you are a strange man."
He drank the wine she handed him, watching her. She moved with grace, she spoke her mind. She was a free soul in bonds.
"Do you seek freedom?"
"Everyday my lord."
"Come with me."
"What?"
"Come with me. I'm not going to kill Ruel. I'm leaving Jerusalem in a few days. I want to see the world. Set greater goals. Come with me."
She smiled.
"I shall think hard on it. Now take this and go. My brothers are home."
He took what she gave him and she led him through the back gate. She waved good bye and locked the gate as her brothers called her name. He ran off, stopping when he reached the river. He opened his hands and smiled. He put her necklace around his neck.
Tirzah ignored her brothers as they sat down to eat, complaining there was not enough.
"Ruel and Nathanael, get a wife and leave me be."
She went into her room and looked out the window. She could see her house and its land. She then looked out at the horizon. That could be hers, she could be free.
