Escape
The sun shone through the window, its intricate designs making patterns all over the room. The smell of food seeped into the room, the young girl jumping up and putting her dress on. She put her hair into a greek knot, pinning it. She slipped into her sandals and washed up, putting her veil over her head. She ran down the stairs, her mother and sister sewing in the courtyard. Her mother looked at her.
"Your father awaits you on the roof."
Her sister, Miriam smiled. Tirzah bowed her head and went up to the roof, her father sitting down. He motioned for her to sit down. She sat on the cushion next to him. He put his hand on her face, letting the veil fall. He looked at his daughter, her hazel eyes seeking his comfort.
"Yocheved is angry at you. She says you don't listen to her, you fight with Miriam and you refuse to pay your older sister respect."
"She's cruel Abba...Ima and Miriam hate me."
"No..they fear you. You are different, special...Yocheved says you can make a sword and weild it, defeat a man in his art. But you hate cooking. You can stay up in the watch tower and shoot an arrow at an enemy but you fall asleep while you sew. She fears your strength, your ability to seek more, to be free. She says I should have given you more discipline."
"Abba....do you think so?"
"No. You are the son I never had. Your brothers, soldiers they may be, but they are weak, foolish. They bring me dishonor."
He kissed her forehead.
"You are 16 and still unmarried. Yocheved worries. She says you are too unruly for a husband. Miriam was married at 12 and look at her now, a widow at 18..."
"Ima wishes I was the one widowed. Not Miriam."
"No....I knew Saul was no good for you. You would have suffered. I would not allow it."
"So what wrong have I done Abba?"
"None, your mother just is angry that you didn't wake in time for sunrise. Tell me, why have you been so tired?"
She smiled.
"I have been reading. Exploring the city, trading my jewels for weapons and books."
"You chide."
"Of course Abba. But I have been reading. It consumes you Abba. So much in this world..."
He smiled and put her veil on. He stood up and took her hand.
"Now, bring your books to me. We shall read tonight. In the mean time, pretend I scolded you, make me bread and bring me water. I will be in the courtyard."
They left the roof, Tirzah squinting hard to bring tears to her eyes. Her mother and sister smiled as she walked by, her father sitting down and reading the scrolls on the small table. Tirzah prepared the dough, kneading it and sighing.
Yahweh...I love my father...but. I need an escape. This way of living is so small compared to the rest of the world I read of. Places where I can be free and learn and live my life. Where I can fall in love with the man of my choice and be with him.....
Azriel
He walked through the city, his eyes scanning his surroundings. He saw his target ahead of him. He took his small dagger out and stepped behind the man, one hit and he slowly helped the man fall onto the bench.
One down...Now for the last one of the day....
Azriel had never been caught, he was the best at his trade. He slipped into the crowds, unnoticed, a small smile when he heard people screaming that they man had been murdered. He dissappeared out of sight, heading into the soldiers district. He bowed at the maidens and at the men, proper greetings. He walked into the plaza, seeing his target. He was a soldier, a new recruit. He was tall and muscular, his sword at his side. Azriel pondered the where and when, deciding he would follow him. He followed the soldier, Ruel, to the river. Ruel met a woman and Azriel let them go into the woods. When Ruel came back, he headed up the street, turning into a long road. He walked into the house, greeting his mother and sister, they were eating. He bowed to his father and headed into a room. Azriel made his way around the house, climbing the wall. He entered through an open window, stepping onto a table and jumping down. He walked into the hallway, he could hear someone singing. He smiled, it was a soothing voice. He had never heard anything like it before. He figured Ruel was still downstairs, he would hear someone come up. He peeked through the crack of the door. He could see her clearly. She was light skinned and had long curly hair. Her hazel eyes were widened, she was reading. He watched as her full lips moved with every word she sang. He wanted to go to her, for her to sing to him. But he had a job to do.
"HEY! You! What are you doing in my father's house!"
Azriel looked, Ruel was there, pointing his sword at him. Azriel jumped back as the door opened, and the girl stepped out. She saw her brother and pushed Azriel. She took his hand and ran with him down the steps. She opened the back gate.
"Go!"
Azriel looked at her and she hit him.
"Go, hurry!"
"Your name."
"What?"
"I won't go until you tell me your name."
"Tirzah."
