To The End [5]

As Conner and I made our way down the street at a remarkably slow pace, our hands stayed locked. This surprised me. What an extremely bold gesture. I mean, I just met him today and he already felt we were close enough to hold hands. I thought it was weird, sure, but I couldn't object. I felt a strange ping of pleasure every time he flexed his fingers, or squeezed my hand lightly.

"So, Jamie," Conner started, looking up at me from beneath his thick eyelashes. "Tell me about yourself." I bit my lip, again, not fully sure if I could trust him. But, his eyes....It was hard to keep from blurting out my entire life story right then.

"Well," I began. "What do you want to know?" I kept my eyes down, staring at my feet, afraid I might say something stupid if I looked at his perfect face again.

He laughed lightly. "Well, first of all," He said, lifting my chin with the tip of his cold finger, so my eyes were level with his. We had stopped walking now. He kept his hand under my chin and stared into my eyes with admiration. He seemed to forget what he was saying before. "Your eyes are absolutely beautiful," he murmured, breathlessly.

I felt my face get hot. I knew I'd turned red out of embarrassed pleasure. I stifled a nervious giggle. "Thank you," I said quietly, a shy smile on my face. He just stared at me, the admiration plain on his face. He removed his hand from my chin and brushed my overgrown bangs away from my eyes, revealing the rest of my face.

He smiled at me. "Why do you hide your face?" he asked, resting his hand on my cheek. I just stared. His hand felt so cold agianst my skin. His eyes pierced deep into mine. I found it hard to speak for a few seconds. "Umm....I don't know," I stammered, shrugging. He kept staring at me, expecting me to say more. "Well," I continued. "I guess, because people ignore me more. They don't notice me, or see me."

Conner seemed confused by my answer. "Why wouldn't you want people to see you?" he pressed. His hand was still on my face. It was extremely distracting. He looked into my eyes intently, like he was searching for the answer there.

"Um..." I shrugged again. I really didn't know why I kept to myself. I was just a very quiet person. I never had many friends. There were people at my school that I talked to occasionally, sure, but I could hardly call them friends. Most of my classmates thought I was weird; The odd, quiet girl. I would never talk to anyone who didn't talk to me first.

"I honestly don't know," I said, looking away from his searching eyes. I kept my eyes down, shaking my head lightly so my hair would fall back into my face. I normally did this when I was uncomfortable or embarrassed.

I heard Conner's soft laughter and felt his cold hand under my jaw again as he lifted my face to his. He tucked my hair behind my ear and whispered, "You're much too beautiful to hide yourself from everyone."

A small smile played across his lips as he dropped his hand from my chin and wrapped his fingers around mine. And then we were walking again.
