Max went home early due to his many injuries. But he didn't want to go. He didn't trust Paul with Tess. He didn't really think that Tess would ever choose Paul over him, but he was definatly scared of what paul might do. But he was forced to go home and get some rest. Luckily, he was alright to drive. It was just his head and his shoulders that hurt now. After he said bye to Tess, he headed out to his car.
When he got out on the road, he realized that he hadn't seen the damage done to him yet. Did he look really bad? He was a little afraid to look in the rearview mirror. What if I looked so bad that I get scared and swirved into a tree? He wasn't going to take the chance. He knew his face probibly wasn't half as bad as he thinks it is. He was just scaring himself.
When he walked in the front door, the house was empty. His dad was still at work. He dropped his backpack on the floor infront of the door and walked into the hallway bathroom. When he flicked on the light, his reflection wasn't exactly a pretty sight. Both of his eyes were purple and blue, his bottom lip was fat, swolen and bleeding, he had little cuts all over the sides of his face, there was a purple bump on his forehead and there was a brand new lump on the bridge of his nose. It looked broken but the school nurse assured him it would look okay in a few days.Max began tending to his cuts and scratches, wipping all the blood away and cleaning them out with rubbing alcohol. When he was done, his face was burned like hell.
He knew today was going to be a really long day. He would have nothing to do. No one to talk to online, he could call anyone and of course daytime television sucks ass. But he decided to begin his boredom with a 3-5 hour nap.

After Max left, Tess raced back to her locker to get her books for 2nd period. She'd just gotten back from the office. Max left for the day and Paul was still down in the principals office waiting for his sentencing. Tess thought for sure he would be suspended. When she got to her locker, Chelsea was waiting there staring into her compact, applying foundation to her already flawless skin. Chelsea looked up and raised her eyebrow at her friend.
"So," she began, snapping her compact shut and dropping it into her giant purse. "Are you gonna tell me what happened?" Tess just stared at her. Did everyone know? It happened before school hours. How could everyone know? "Um, about what?" Tess said, testing to see if Chelsea was talking about the little hallway brawl that happened earlier. "Duh! Your like part of a love triangle and you didn't tell me?" Chelsea said, playfully smacking Tess' arm.
"I was hopping no one found out," Tess said, looking back at her locker. She twisted the dial a couple times and it snapped open. "Everyone found out, babe," Chelsea said with a sigh, as if it was obvious. "So, you and Max are like...together?" Chelsea said, a smile spreading acrossed her face. Tess blushed. "Sorta," she said quietly, grabbing her books and slamming her locker shut.
"What about Paul?" Chelsea lowered her voice to a whisper. Her face became very serious all the sudden. Paul was Chelsea's friend, too. She didn't want to see Paul get hurt any more than Tess did. Tess sighed and began walked down the hall, Chelsea following her. "I don't know. I sorta already made my decision and Paul knows that. I think we'll be alright but," She stopped infront of her next class and turned toward Chelsea. "I know I hurt him. I feel horrible."
Tess looked down at her feet. She felt ashamed that she, the one person Paul always said he could trust, had just completely crushed him. This was all way too dramatic for Tess to handle. She didn't like drama and she never had typical teenage problems. She was always too relaxed and sane to care what people thought about her and if people were talking about her. But all this Max-Paul stuff was really testing her.
"Aww," Chelsea said giving Tess a hug. "Its gonna be okay. Paul will get over it and it'll all go back to normal." Chelsea pulled away and looked at Tess. "Trust me," she said with a smile. Tess gave her a small smile back and turned to walk into her next class.

Paul ran his fingers throught his shaggy brown hair and slumped back down in his seat. He was alone in the principals office. He had just been told that he was going to be suspended for a week, have detention for a week after he came back to school and wouldn't be aloud to join any athletic teams the whole year. Which ment no football, basketball and worst of all, no hockey. He loved hockey with all his heart and now it was being taken away from him, just like everything else in his life.
It was a horrible week for Paul. First his girlfriend breaks up with him over the weekend, then he asks out the girl he loves and is forced to watch her make-out with the guy she chose over him. And to make things worse, he beats the shit out of her boyfriend and gets punished in the worst way possible. No hockey.
Plus, Tess would probibly never forgive him. Even though she doesn't love him back, they could at least stay friends. But considering what he did to Max, he wasn't expecting Tess to talk to him any time soon.
*****
When Max woke up it was time for school to get let out, which ment Tess would be home soon and he could talk to her. He lifted himself off the couch, where he had resided for the last 6 hours, and made his way to his room. His footsteps were heavy and his posture was lazy. He was really stiff from laying on the couch for hours.
He slumped into computer chair and logged onto his Instant Messanger. As soon as his buddylist popped up, a bunch of little IM boxes clouded the screen. All the screen names were of people who went to his school, but most of them were people he never talked to.
RockAndRoll4Life: dude! you got the shit kicked out of you?!
LauraLynnHeartsYou: aww. you poor thing. are you okay?
TrishXX6: poor baby. need some company?? ;)
DanIsBetterThanYou: ohh man. heard what happened. r u dead?
HotOnIce: WTF!! Paul can't play hockey this season now, asshole!
There were about 16 more IM boxes, but Max decided to ignore them all and log off. Tess wasn't even online.
Right as he logged off, the doorbell rang. He looked out his bedroom window and saw Tess standing there, her messenger bad still on her shoulder. She must not have gone home.
Max opened the front door and was greeted with a high pitched "eeeep" and a tight hug from Tess. She kissed him deeply until he pulled away. He laughed. "What are you doing here?" he said looking down at her, his hands still on her waist and hers still drapped around his neck. She just looked up at him and smiled shyly. "I wanted to see you," she said in a small voice. Max kissed her on the top of the head and closed the door as he pulled tess inside.
Tess walked over to the couch and plopped down on it lazily. She pulled her messanger bag over her head and dropped it on the floor and sighed. "You are so lucky you weren't at school today," she said, scooting aside on the couch, making room for Max. "Why? What happened?" Max asked, pulling Tess close to him and wrapping his arm around her shoulders. Tess leaned her head on his shoulder. "Everyone kept on asking what happened. Apparently they think I acctually want to talk about it." She sighed deeply, putting her hand on Max's chest.
"How are you feeling?" she asked, lifting her head slightly so she could see him. Max shrugged. "I'm alright," he answered. But he wasn't. All day he'd been asking himself the same questions. Does Paul like Tess? Did she know he liked her? Why didn't she tell me? Why didn't she tell him about me? He was afraid Tess would get mad if he said anything, so he didn't. He just sat there, Tess in his arms.
