Tess put her cello and bow on the rack in the cello room. Practice was over already. To Tess, it seems too short. They all did amazing today. The whole class learned a new song and was already really good at it. Plus, the piece Max put together for Mike and Tess was beautiful. It sounded just right, matching both of their styles. Tess' heart was still floating. Max had wrote that song especially for me, she thought over and over again. So what if he gave Mike a copy. I played it better and it was much more my style than his.
She sighed and walked out of the cello room, closing the door behind her. She looked around the room and realized she and Max were the last ones left. She watched him for a little bit. He was playing his guitar, with his eyes closed, as if trying to consentrait. His fingers moved across the strings faster than she had ever seen. She listined and heard...Max. The song he was playing sounded like him. A fast and soft, A minor riff. It sounded great.
But soon, after playing his 3rd chorous, he opened his eyes and stopped. He looked over at Tess with a confused look on his face. "Oh, I though everyone was gone," he said quietly. "Sorry, I was just listining," Tess said shyly, shuffling her feet a bit. "Did you write that yourself?" Max smiled proudly. "Yep. You like it?" Tess nodded with a smile.
Max nodded, smiled bigger and looked down at his strings. "Well," he said puting his guitar back in its case. "I'm gonna leave now. You have a ride?" he said walking out the door. She followed him, pulling her cell phone out. She dialed her mom's number. "I don't know, let me check," she said, flashing Max a smile.
As they walked down the long halls and out the front door, her mom still hadn't picked up. She sighed. "Well, I can't get ahold of my mom," she said, trying to act disappointed that she didn't have a ride. He's gonna offer to take me home, she thought happily.
"Oh, well, if you need a ride, I could---" Max was cut off by the sound of screeching tires pull up to the curb. Paul, in his old shabby mustang, rolled down his window. His face looked worn down and saggy. All his perfect features now seemed like they were sanded away from his face. His shaggy brown hair looked like he'd slept on it wrong and was sticking up in different places. He gave Tess a fake smile, clearly trying to hide the fact that he had just been broken up with and was devistated.
"Hey, Tess. Havn't seen you all day," he said with a drone in his voice that made Tess want to cry for his poor broken heart. "You need a ride?" he asked, begging her with his big, brown puppy dog eyes to get in the car so she could make him feel better. "Um," Tess hesitated. She looked from her sad, mess of a friend to Max, who had a sad look on his face, too. No, not sad, disappointed. "Looks like you have a ride now," he said, trying to muster up a sincere smile. "Well, I'll see you later, Tess," he said and turned toward his car. "Bye," she called after him.
She turned back toward Paul and gave him a big smile, hoping it was a start to cheering his sorry ass up. She went around the front end and opened the passenger side door. She slide in and looked over at Paul. "How are you feeling," she said with a comforting tone. He looked at her, gave her a small smile, and sighed. "I don't know," he said, putting his hands on the steering wheel, not looking at Tess. "I feel...confused about alot of things right now." She nodded slowly, her smile fading.
She hated seeing him like this. All those girls who did this to him, didn't deserve him. He need better. Paul took a deep breath and put the car in drive. He pulled out of the school and started to talk again.
"Why do I put up with all these bitches," he said defeatedly. "Hey, your the one who picks them," Tess said. "I've always told you that you could do better." Paul nodded. "And your always right about it, too," he said, taking his eyes off the road for a second to look at her. "I mean, you've always been there for me. I don't know why I've never see it before." He said, looking back at the road.
Tess stared at him for a second, thinking. "What do you mean?" she asked, curiously. He sighed again, turning into Tess' nieghborhood. "Well, you've always been good to me and," he paused. "Your just so amazing." He took another deep breath, as if about to say something big. "Your the one I'm ment to be with, Tess," he said stopping infront of her house. "You've always been the one."
