"Arden." Lysnader's voice seemed to come from far off. "Wake up." Her eyes opened and she was somehow alert. "Sorry, you were moaning, you did not sound happy. I thought I should wake you," he paused, thoughtful. "What were you dreaming about?"
"I can't remember," she lied. Her heart was still pounding. Josef's awful laughter still followed her as he chased her. He had been running in circles, toying with her.
"Are you sure?" Lysander's eyes were dark, he knew she was lying.
"I'm scared of Josef, my mind is just making sure that i know it. Will you protect me from him?"
"You don't know what it is you ask, but yes, with my life." Lysander fell silent, an odd silence prevailed until Arden spoke again,
"Why are you friends if he's so evil?"
"Josef is very powerful, the years have made it so. But, he wasn't always this way, the years have also twisted his mind."
"Geez, how old is he?" Arden questioned. Lysander watched her for a moment before answering,
"You might as well know. Josef has lived far too long, nearly a thousand years." The set of Lysander's mouth was grim, he was perfectly serious.
"What are you?" The words slipped past numb lips, she was horrified.
"Are you sure you want to know? It's a lot easier for me if you don't fear me."
"Just tell me."
"Josef and I are vampires." Subconciously Arden clutched her neck,
"You're not going to... are you?" she asked, unable to say the words.
"No, of course not. What all you humans think of us, thanks to Dracula. There is no such thing as blood lust for vampires, except the freaky ones. The only thing odd about us is that we don't age and we have some powers. More of the brain is unlocked over time."
"And how old are you?"
"Me? I'm 500." Lysander folded his hands in front of him, waiting for her reaction.
