Web of Blood 1
|
The long line of people shuffled forward slowly. There were about a dozen of them, mostly men, but also several women and one small boy, who was maybe seven or eight. Their hands were tied with thick ropes, chaffing their wrists raw, but that was the least of their problems. The first man stepped forward. He was stunningly good-looking, with dark hair and stormy eyes. His clothes were tattered and bloodstained, barely covering his pale skin. Another person would have collapsed, but he stood straight and defiant.
The executioner stepped forward, his words slurring. "Regarding the man known only as ‘Demon’, he is henceforth sentenced to hang by the neck until dead for the following crimes. Stealing money from the treasury of His Majesty, King Salzar I; impersonating a guard of the Crown, and as a result, sabotaging their weapons.” The young man grinned appreciatively as the memory came back to him. “Stealing important documents from the Palace; arson of government buildings; freeing of high security prisoners with the help of a stolen and highly trained bloodhound belonging to His Majesty,” Demon laughed outright at this, a harsh chuckle, than caught the eye of one of the guards. Sobering, he looked down. “And consorting with the group of men known as…the thieves guild.” The executioner concluded his list. “Do you deny the charges?”
The young man looked up, giving the executioner a piercing stare. “Well, even if I did, it wouldn’t matter, would it? You’d hang me if I were innocent as a newborn baby, just to keep your reputation.”
The older man nodded once. “Well, any last words?”
The boy spit on his eye, just as a shadow fell over the crowd. All the officials were cloaked in darkness, leaving only a bubble of light around the prisoners and a new woman who had just appeared. She was also beautiful, with coal black hair that fell arrow straight down her back in a braid and strong facial features.
His face lit up. “I knew you’d come!” he exclaimed joyfully.
The woman nodded. “I told you I would. You wouldn’t believe how many magic wards are on this place. We’ve got to get you out before they get them up and running again.”
“Just one thing,” He muttered, turning to untie the first in the long line of prisoners.
The woman grabbed his arm. “We have to go! Come on! I almost lost you once, don’t make me lose you again. Please.”
“No.” His face set into a stubborn defiant air, identical to the girl’s. After a moment they grinned and began to untie the prisoners, almost at the same time.
“How is it you always win our arguments?”
“Oh, come on, you win plenty of them. I’m just the better salesperson for stupid ideas.” After a minute, he got to the last man on the string, but before he could finish on the knots a young soldier burst out of the cover of shadow. With a yell of fury, he went straight for the boy.
“Damnit! Dez – knife!!” The girl’s hands glittered with power before two long bladed knifes appeared in her hands. She threw them both to her companion, who caught them, grinning. “It’s been too long since I had a good fight.”
Suddenly more men appeared, surrounding them. Their aim was no longer to capture, but to kill. Fighting desperately, one with magic and one with knives, they were holding their own, but his injuries were dragging him towards collapse. He faltered, and a soldier’s sword flicked out, leaving a shallow cut from shoulder to hip. The young man doubled in pain, and another soldier grabbed his arm, twisting it around behind him. With a sickening crack, the prisoner screamed, dropping the knife.
“Enough! You need to get out of here!” The woman yelled.
“No, I’m not leaving you alone,” Demon yelled back.
“No more of your stupid masochistic values. You need a healer.”
“And you’ll find one who’ll treat me without turning me in?”
She grinned as magic collected at her palms. “I think I know someone.” She grabbed his shoulders, and suddenly he vanished.
