Vampire Story part 28
|
When I woke the next morning, Isaac was sitting perfectly motionless across the fire from me. He was cross-legged, with his eyes closed, his hands, palm up, were closed around something, but I wasn’t sure what. I stared at him idly for several seconds, when I saw Holly slip back into camp. She came up behind him and whispered “Isaac?” very softly.
Isaac ignored her.
“Isaac, what are you doing?” she snapped, louder.
Isaac yelped, dropping the hot coal he had held in his hand. “Holly! What do you want?”
“To know what you’re doing. What kind of stupid idea was that? You’re going to burn your hand off.”
Isaac rolled his eyes. “No I wasn’t.”
“Then what the hell were you trying to accomplish?”
He sighed deeply. “I wanted to ignore the pain.”
“Excuse me?”
“If I can do this with fire, I should be able to do it next time I have a vision. I’m tired of these visions that don’t do anything for us. If my head’s going to explode, I want something productive to come out of it.”
“Well, about damn time,” Callum snapped. “If you’d made a little more of an effort, then…” He didn’t finish the sentence.
“Look,” Isaac began angrily, but then he sighed. “I know this is my fault, just, please, leave it be. I’m working on it, ok?”
Callum stared at him angrily for a moment, but before he could say anything, I interrupted, making them all jump. “Visions?”
They all stared at me for a moment before Holly spoke. “Isaac has…visions, yeah. We can’t figure out why or what of though. ‘Cept, we think it’s the future. Sorry we forgot to tell you.”
I frowned slightly, and nodded. “Do any of the rest of you have super-powers?”
Holly shook her head, grinning. “Not really. Isaac’s kind of the freak among us.” She grinned sideways at him, as if waiting for him to acknowledge that she had spoken.
Isaac just nodded slowly, than stood up. “I think I’m going to go for a walk.” Then, quite suddenly, as he turned, he bowed his head, stumbling back. He clutched a tree for support, and we watched, as he became perfectly still, almost a statue. He stood there, seemingly in a trance, for close to a minute. Then he raised his head, shaking it slightly, at stared at us, brow furrowed inn thought. “It didn’t hurt,” He said, sounding almost dazed.
Holly raised her eyebrows. “Impressive,” she told him.
He shook his head again. “It wasn’t like that. It was more like someone was talking to me. Everything was sort of ivory, and I could hear a woman talking. I felt – peaceful. It was nice, not like someone was trying to hurt me, more like she was trying to guide me.”
“And what did she say?” Holly asked, sounding slightly disgruntled.
“She wanted me to – go to Wales. Actually, she said ‘come to me, come to Wales.’ It adds up to the same thing though.”
“I see. And are you going?”
Isaac nodded slowly. “I think I have to. I have to stop ignoring this.”
I had watched in silence up to this point, but this was too much. “God, you guys are so weird! We’re vampires, you don’t have to do anything.” I jumped up, hurrying away.
“Lori,” Callum jumped up too, grabbing my wrist. “Where are you going?”
I glared at him. “Out. You guys are – just too much. I’m going for a walk.”
“You can’t do that!”
“Oh yeah?” I challenged him. “Give me one reason to stay.”
“There’s a crazy necromancer out there trying to kill you.” He sighed. “I don’t want you to get hurt again, so please, don’t leave, ok?”
I pursed my lips angrily, but then nodded, sitting down again. Holly was watching Isaac through narrowed eyes, while he leaned against the tree, clearly lost in thought. “Well, I’m coming.”
Isaac grinned. “Cool. But you don’t need to come.”
Holly glared at him. “A – Wales is cool and I haven’t been there since cars were invented. B – Do you even have a bank account?”
“Uhh…no.”
Holly grinned in triumph. “Exactly. So you need my money to get there. And you’re only eighteen. I’m not letting you go out into the big wide world all on your own.”
Isaac stared at her. “You’re eighteen too, Holly.”
Holly shook her head. “I have over 150 years of experience to my name. You are young and naïve and must be protected from the wiles of this – white woman.”
Isaac rolled his eyes. “Holly, I’ll be fine. But anyway, are you two coming?”
Callum nodded, and I scowled. “Yeah, I’ll come. But this had better be worth it. I’m tired of not knowing you guys and being completely lost. It’s just weird.”
Isaac smiled a little sadly. “I’ll figure out a way to fix it eventually.”
I scowled again. “I know.”
