I rounded a corner, peering around for an unsuspecting human. I only saw one young boy, reaching for an apple left behind on a market stand that had closed for the day. He looked to be about twelve or thirteen, but could have been older. He was tall, but very skinny, and dressed in torn, grimy garments that were too big for him. His shaggy dark hair flopped in his face. It badly needed washing. Not exactly appetizing, but passable.
“Hey, kid!” I said, reaching out to grab him. He turned to face me, glaring distrustfully. I gasped. I couldn’t help it. His eyes, framed perfectly by his hair, were a piercing ice green. They looked like they could see into my soul and learn all my painful secrets. Yet, at the same time, I could see pain of his own in his face. It made him look a lot older…
The dream fast-forwarded to several minutes later, on the bridge.
Callum glanced around at us. “Who’s up for dessert?” he said, eyeing Isaac. Isaac gulped, and quickly took a step back.
“You didn’t share with Lori, why should she share with you? He’s her food.” Holly argued. “And why are you always so hungry?” I suspected she was saying that just to bug Callum. Holly was the only person who got away with bugging Callum unscathed.
“We are NOT going to eat him!” I stated angrily
“What!?!” asked Isaac, Callum, and Holly in unison. Isaac looked incredibly shocked. Honestly, if I’d wanted to eat him, I wouldn’t have waited this long.
“He is not going to be eaten. He is going to live with me – us.”
Again, the dream changed, and I was explaining how to become a vampire to Isaac…“Vampirism is a…disease, for lack of a better word. Some doctors have actually taken blood tests.” I smiled wryly. “However, there hasn’t been a lot of successful research in the field. Most of the doctors didn’t live very long. There was one vampire-doctor, who did a lot of research. This is all word-of-mouth, it has never actually been published. As far as I know, it is caused by a kind of microorganism. It is similar to a bacterium, but for the most part, it’s in a class of its own. It can be transferred through spit, or blood. When a vampire bites a human, some of their spit moves into their blood, infecting them. Depending on the will to live, and the immune system of the person being bitten, just spit in blood doesn’t always work. The best way is to let the blood mix. Some people think of it as a curse, others a blessing.”
Years later, as I changed Isaac… I felt him go limp beneath me and pulled away, fearing I had gone to far. I bit into my arm and dripped the blood into his wounds. I held my arm against his neck until he shuddered and collapsed. I heard his breathing slow and his heartbeat finally stop. I laid him on his bed and waited for him to wake up.
A book of Isaac’s lay open on the table, with information on poisons. One entry drew my attention, under the heading Brykolthanatos. “A well known poison among necromancers, capable of killing a vampire through only a small cut. It is easy to smear on a blade, and is nearly colorless. Brykolthanatos is cured only by the blood of-

“Damn it Isaac!” Holly screamed. “Don’t you dare die on me!”
I woke with a start, trying to remember my dream, but also wanting to know how Isaac was. Scrambling my thoughts together, I hurried over to Holly. “How’s Isaac?”
“He stopped breathing or moving at all a little bit ago, but I think that’s just to stop the poison from spreading. He’s just worrying me, being so still. He was muttering before, and now he’s acting all – dead.” She bit her lip. “And I’m really hungry, but I don’t want to leave. I’m worried if I do I’ll come back and he’ll be a little pile of dust and I don’t want that to happen.”
I paused. Holly’s comment about hunger had made everything fall into place. I remembered how to cure Isaac’s poison, as long as he wasn’t too comatose. I stared at him a moment before punching his as hard as I could.
“What the hell are you doing?” Holly shrieked, running towards me.
“Trust me,” I said, punching Isaac again. “I just have to get him mad enough.” Finally, Isaac came to just enough to snarl and change into his vampire form. I pulled him to my neck, allowing him to feed off me.
I had forgotten how much it hurt to have a vampire drink your blood. His fangs tore into my flesh, and after a few minutes I began to feel dizzy. I could feel my blood draining, and I finally had to push him off me before I collapsed. I don’t know why it hit me so strongly at that moment, but I realized I no longer saw Isaac as Ivan's replacement, nor as the young boy I had found on the street nearly five years ago. I saw him as merely Isaac, a grown man, one of the dearest friends I had, and I loved him so much it hurt.
I was vaguely aware of someone putting me on a blanket, and then I lost all awareness. My entire body shut down, repairing the lost blood cells. I don’t know how long I was in the comatose state, but I finally became aware enough to dream.
