Vampire Story 22
|
I gazed at the stars, thinking about nothing. It was a clear night, several days after we had arrived. Everyone else was asleep, so I was the only one to see the man creep into camp. He was tall and thin, nondescript in appearance, but wearing a dark hooded coat. More terrifying was the smell of rotting bodies that hung around him, marking him as a necromancer. He was not the one who had attacked Holly, but anyone sneaking into our camp was not welcome. I jumped up hurrying back to Isaac just as I saw him draw a knife. “Isaac!” I yelled, jerking everyone awake.
The man turned, running towards me instead. I threw him off, onto the ground. Callum joined me; just as I saw two more people, a man and a woman, hurry into the clearing. They were clearly trying to kill us, and I had to admit they were good. All of them had power, and a lot of it. They also were fast, almost as fast as us. We had the advantage, but once one of us got hit by a spell, we were in trouble.
The woman turned around unexpectedly, and threw a strange iridescent powder at me. It made my entire body go numb, and I fell backwards, coughing, Callum jumped forward, grabbing her and lifting her up.
“You have no idea how much I want to kill you right now,” He snarled. “But I won’t. Why ever you’re here, whatever you’re trying to accomplish, I don’t give a damn. Just get the hell out of my camp, before I make you.” He squeezed her arm, and I heard it break, then he threw her away from him, as far as he could.
She scrambled up, and the two men followed her, seeming to have taken Callum’s warning to heart. “Finally.” Callum snarled. “They were really starting to get on my nerves.” He turned away, stalking back to our fire.
“Callum!” Isaac yelled, running to shove him over. The arrow meant for Callum’s heart missed, burying itself deep into Isaac’s shoulder instead. Isaac fell to his knees, the force of the arrow making him gasp. Callum rolled away, unhurt. Holly and I ran forward to Isaac, kneeling down beside him.
“Isaac, are you ok?” Holly asked, concern in her eyes.
Isaac gritted his teeth and nodded. “I will be,” he gasped, gripping the arrow.
“Hold still. I’ll try to pull the arrow out,” I said, moving forward. I grasped the arrow, pulling it cleanly out.
Callum stared at Isaac, incredulous. “You saved my life…” he breathed.
Isaac scowled and rolled his eyes. “Yeah,” He grimaced. “It stings. I feel dizzy.”
I picked up the arrow I had put aside and smelled it. Under the reek of necromancy I could faintly smell an acrid, tangy substance. “Poison?” I asked, handing it to Holly.
She sniffed it as well and swore. “It’s brykolthanatos, a poison designed specially for killing vampires. It’s fast acting and can kill one of us from only a small cut.”
Isaac moaned. “Brykolthatanos, I know I’ve heard of it somewhere.” He struggled to remember past the dizziness. “It’s…it’s…oh,” He mumbled. “Shit.” He collapsed onto the ground and lost consciousness.
“Holly, what’s the antidote?” I asked. “And how fast does this act?”
Holly stared at Isaac, horrified. “I don’t know. I knew one guy who got infected, and he died in two days. I don’t know how to stop it.” She looked on the brink of panicking. Holly didn’t panic. This was bad.
“Do we know anything else about this? Lori, do you?” Callum asked.
“No,” I mumbled. I knew I remembered the name from somewhere, but I couldn’t recall.
“Since when do you care?” Holly asked, slightly angrily. “You hate Isaac.”
“He just saved my life, Holly! You can’t expect me to ignore that!”
“Wow.”
“I can change!” Callum snapped, looking resentful. “I don’t have to be an ass to him every second.”
Holly looked as if she didn’t believe him.
I ignored them pacing up and down our camp. I couldn’t believe that I had lived as long as I had and never heard of this poison, especially living with Isaac. What was it he had said? ‘I can recite every known poison in the northern hemisphere.’ The one person who could help was the person who needed help. There was no way any orb was this valuable. The thoughts swirled around my head as I tried to think of any way to help Isaac. I couldn’t let him die, not now…
Holly sat next to him, watching and also trying to find a way to stop him. He seemed feverish, tossing back and forth, but his skin remained icy cold. He muttered slightly, eyes moving rapidly beneath the closed lids.
Callum emerged from the trees, looking around. “I couldn’t find the assholes. They disappeared without a trace, like they evaporated!”
“It’s ok Callum,” I reassured him. “We’ll find them eventually. I just want to make Isaac better.”
Callum’s concerned eyes flicked to Isaac, then back to me. “You should sleep, Lori.”
I shook my head. “I’m to worked up to sleep. And besides, then I’m completely vulnerable to attack.”
Holly rolled her eyes. “You’ve been awake for more than twenty-four hours. Besides, do you think that we’d let you sleep through being stabbed? And, your sleeping mind might some up with something your awake mind can’t. Go to sleep. I’ll wake you up in a little bit.”
I couldn’t argue with them, not when I was as exhausted as they said. I nodded and curled up in my sleeping bag, falling asleep almost instantly, despite my worries.
