Vampire Story part 20
|
The next evening, we all sat down to talk about what we should do.
“So.” Callum said, “Lets figure this out. Isaac, you say you have visions, but you can’t remember them. So what’s the point?”
Isaac scowled. “I don’t know any more about than you do. It hurts, I can’t remember anything, and then suddenly they come true. But logically, regardless of whatever these visions are, we should leave. If that stupid necromancer is bent on our destruction, he’ll find us again, especially if we stay in one place. I’m guessing ”
“Someone tried to kill you and now you want all of us to leave?”
Isaac rolled his eyes. “Let me rephrase that Callum, using small words. Someone with big power want to kill us, want Holly dead. He was angry enough to try killing her in room full of vampires. If we leave, he not find us. Then, we not die.”
“You know what?” Callum yelled, “I am so tired of you acting like you’re better than us because you’ve read everything ever written. It’s your fault all of this is happening, so stop acting so superior!”
Isaac stood up. “You are tired of me? I spend all my time in the library avoiding you. I make every effort to be civil to you, to see your side of things, and everything I do bugs you anyway. You know what I’m tired of? Your little ‘self pity’ act. So you can’t eat humans? Get over it! I get headaches that make me feel like my head is about to explode, but do I spend a year and a half at a bar moaning? No, I work around it. If you could think about other people for one second, maybe you wouldn’t drive people so insane. Why were you fighting with Lori? Because you were thinking about yourself and not seeing someone else’s side?”
“You annoy her too! You aren’t that great!” Callum shouted, standing up too.
“I’ve never made her attack me before.”
“Stop!” I screamed. “When did this become about me? Stop fighting!”
Isaac and Callum continued to glare at each other, until Holly said, “Boys, don’t make me hurt you. I have better things to do today than wash blood out of my clothes.”
“Sorry,” Isaac muttered, sitting down.
“Fine,” Callum snapped, following suit.
“Do you promise to be good?” Holly asked severely.
They nodded.
“Ok then, about leaving. I was getting bored with being here anyway, so lets go to Tibet.” Holly grinned.
“Tibet?”
“I like Tibet. Actually, I’ve never been there. But it’s the roof of the world, the highest point on earth. I would be awesome! And, I have enough money to get us there.”
“I’d like to go to Tibet,” Isaac said. “I’ve read a lot about it.”
“Well, that’s a majority.” Holly stated. “Let’s go.”
“Holly, that’s 50%. That’s not a majority.” I told her.
“But Callum isn’t coming.”
“What?” Callum spluttered. “Who said I wasn’t coming?”
“Well, you seemed so negative about the whole thing.”
Callum rolled his eyes. “I’m coming.”
“You will? Yay!” Holly jumped up to hug him, then sat back down. “Lori, you want to come?”
“I’m coming too.”
Holly turned to Isaac. “Good, that’s settled. What can you tell me about your vision-y things?”
Isaac sighed. “I already told you everything I know. They hurt so bad I can’t remember anything, but they seem to foretell the future.”
“So you think if it didn’t hurt you could remember?” I asked quietly.
“I might,” Isaac said. “I don’t know…”
I remembered the years right after Ivan and Charles’ death, years where I had done everything I could to forget. Now Isaac had to do the opposite, but it worked on the same principles. “Discipline.” I murmured, still partly lost in thought.
“What?” Isaac and Holly asked.
“It’s all about discipline. Tell yourself that you don’t feel pain, you won’t. Work at it long enough and you’ll almost forget about it. You have the mind-control to do it.”
“Since when did you become the expert on mind control?” Callum asked.
I looked at him, forcing my voice to become expressionless. “For a very long time.”
Callum seemed to realize he’d said something wrong. “Oh, I see,” he mumbled, looking down.
“Callum,” Holly said suddenly, breaking the silence, “What’s that on your right cheek?”
Callum rubbed his hand across his cheek. “There’s nothing there.”
Holly shook her head. “It looks like a scar.”
“Vampires don’t scar, Holly.” Callum argued. “And besides, Lori’s the only one who’s gotten the chance to cut me lately.”
“Lori, can I see your knife?” Holly asked, turning to me.
I took it from the sheath at the small of my back, where I always kept it, and handed it to Holly.
She examined it, running a finger along the blade. “I don’t see anything unusual about it,” She said, returning it to me. “What did you do to it?”
“Neat, isn’t it? I got this really nice witch girl to bless it for me. Nice, but really dim. She didn’t even realize I was a vampire.”
“So, what does it do?” Holly asked.
“It scars.”
Holly laughed. “It scars? That’s it! Why not have it infect or cause the wounded area to grow purple fur or go up in flames or something? Isn’t it scarring a little lame?”
I shook my head. “A, I don’t like violence. If I can scar them once, then they’ll remember me and not try to attack me again. And B, the girl who blessed this couldn’t do any of those things. This was the best she could do.”
I glanced at Callum. It was hard to tell if he was thinking or scowling. “Well, it seems like you got your wish. I underestimated you Lori, and I’m not about to do it again.” He rose and left for his room.
Holly laughed. “You hurt his feelings, Lori. Poor little Callum… He’ll get over it. I’ll go buy plane tickets.” She jumped up and rushed out of the room.
“So.” Callum said, “Lets figure this out. Isaac, you say you have visions, but you can’t remember them. So what’s the point?”
