Vampire Story part 16

Holly paused, at a loss for something to say. After a minute, she spoke. “Um, I’ll be right back.” She ran over to me. “You heard all that?”
I nodded. “I can’t believe someone would go that far over one little orb. And why did he only curse Callum? He barely even touched it.”
Holly stopped at this. “Oh. Not good. Suddenly I am scared, not sympathetic. Not good at all. Oh boy. Badness.”
“Well, at least giving Callum a bath isn’t going to endanger us. I’ll go find Isaac.” I looked over. Isaac was standing in a corner, idly watching the dancing bodies. He didn’t seem to be enjoying himself.
“He is really not a people person, is he?” Holly asked, following my gaze.
“No. He didn’t even fit in when he was human. He never invited anyone over or anything. It might have been partially from living with me, but I think it’s mostly his personality.”
“What the hell does he do in his spare time?” Holly asked incredulously.
“He reads.”
Holly rolled her eyes. “Well, we should go. Can you go get him?”
I threaded my way though the mass of people to Isaac. “We’re leaving.”
“Finally!” He gasped. “This is boring.” He looked over, noticing Holly slinging Callum over her shoulders. As we started to move towards them, Isaac asked “Is Callum coming?”
I sighed. “Yes, Callum is coming home with us. It’s Holly’s house. She decides who the guests are.” I could see Callum shove Holly away from him, snarling. I could almost hear him saying ‘I can walk, thank you.’
We left Il Consecrare, winding through a nearly deserted park. Callum was wrapped up in his own thoughts, pointedly ignoring us. As we passed a small pond, Holly jumped and shoved Callum. He stumbled, falling into the pond.
“What was that that for?” Isaac asked, leaning over the pond to watch Callum.
In answer, Holly jumped around, shoving Isaac in the pond too, just as Callum was dragging himself out. Isaac fell on Callum, and they both fell back in a tangle of limbs. Callum was the first to climb out. I could understand why Holly burst out laughing. He did look pretty silly, with a lily pad on his hair, and covered in pondweed. He brushed himself off, throwing the lily pad onto Isaac, who had just climbed out.
“Ow…” Isaac gasped, taking a step back, clutching his head.
“Weakling,” Callum scoffed. “It can’t have hurt you that much.”
“Are you honestly that thick, Callum?” I snapped, just as Holly said, “Callum. Shut the hell up.”
Isaac screamed, falling to the ground.
“What is it?” Holly asked. “Do you think it had something to do with the curse?”
I shook my head, kneeling beside him. “It’s probably just a migraine. He gets them sometimes, where the pain gets so bad he blacks out. I hoped they’d get better now he’s a vampire, but I guess not.”
“Then why do you look so worried?”
“It’s just sudden, is all. It usually takes a while before they get this bad. If we just get him somewhere he can rest, I think he’ll be fine.” I bent to pick him up, but Holly stopped me.
“Lori, there’s no way you could pick him up. There are people watching.”
I looked in the direction she pointed, studying them for a moment, ‘No, they’re to drunk to care. They won’t even remember us in the morning.”
Holly rolled her eyes. “Fine, just one thing.” She turned to Callum. “Carry him.”
“What?!” Callum yelped. “Why?”
Isaac screamed again, curled in a ball on the ground.
“Just do it.” Holly snapped, glaring at Callum.
Callum rolled his eyes and bent to pick Isaac up. He carried him to back room of Il Consecrare, and we waited for him to regain consciousness. After two minutes, Callum started complaining. “Why are we waiting so long? I’m cold, and I want to leave.”
Holly sighed. “You’re a vampire Callum. You don’t get cold. Be patient. We’d do the same thing for you. Probably.”
Callum scowled, but stopped complaining.
Fifteen minutes later, Isaac finally stirred. He blinked, looking around. “What happened? Where am I?” He reached up to grab his head, and then stopped. “Why do I smell like Callum?”
Holly laughed. “Callum had to carry you. We figured that leaving you on a wet bank by a big body of water when you were passed out wasn’t a good idea.”
“Oh. My head hurts…” He moaned. “Unh. That was so weird. I thought I saw – I heard chanting. It was all dark, but there was a weird red light and then – it sounded like Latin.”
I frowned. “Weird…I don’t know why that would be. Maybe you were just hallucinating.”
Callum broke across my musings. “Do I still have to go home with you guys? Or can I leave?”
Isaac groaned, massaging his temples. “Do you have to talk so loud?”
Callum rolled his eyes.
Holly smacked him. “Let’s go. Callum, that includes you. Isaac, can you walk?”
Isaac nodded and stood up. He seemed steady, but it took longer than last night to get home. Callum grumbled most of the way home, but finally quieted. Isaac went straight to bed without saying a word.
