Vampire Story part 15
|
I prowled the dark streets, Bonnie and Holly by my side. It was well after midnight, and most of our prey had vanished. However, in L.A. it was very rare that no one was out at night. It had been almost five days since we had eaten. Death Valley was not a place for humans and we all my senses had sharpened as my instinct threatened to take over. I could place this memory now, 1972, about five years after Mikhail’s death. We passed a bar, knowing that these people would be the easiest food. I was the first to notice the dark shape sprawled across the alley. I stopped and gestured toward him.
‘Excellent,” Holly breathed. ‘Finally.”
We stepped forward, peering at him. He wasn’t asleep, as I had thought, merely drunk. He was about 5’ 11’’, with light brown hair that was shaggy and unkempt. He looked like he had the potential to have serious muscles, but didn’t care enough to exercise. His hazel eyes were slightly bloodshot and only half open. I remember this only afterward. Right now, all I care about is the smell of blood, rolling off him. He smelled of weeks of alcohol and few baths, cigarette smoke, and faintly but clearly, the smell of marijuana. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t have cared, but now I was willing to accept even him.
I stepped forward, eager for even a small part of him.
‘Stop.’ Bonnie’s quiet voice commanded us. ‘I want to have a look at him.’
Holly and I stepped back, fighting down the urge to kill him right away. Bonnie bent, turning his head toward her. ‘What’s your name?’ She asked.
The man blinked, looking at Bonnie in bewilderment. ‘Callum’ me muttered, voice slurring.
‘And why have you done this to yourself? What is the point of drinking yourself into a stupor? You will die soon, you know that, right?’
Callum shrugged. ‘Don’t have nothin’ to live for. May as well enjoy myself.’
Bonnie straightened. ‘I see. Would you like strength, Callum? A reason to live? Would you like hope again? I can give you a life again.’
Callum frowned, still trying to process. ‘I guess. That’d be nice. You can‘t t do nothin’ though.’
Holly and I looked at each other in shock, before Holly spoke up. ‘Bonnie, you can’t be serious. You’re going to turn him?’
‘I am.’
‘That’s ridiculous. We’re starving; he’s a lost cause anyway. He’ll be even lamer than Mikhail was. Why in hell would you want to change him?’ Holly argued.
‘I don’t know. Logically, he has no potential. I still feel like I should change him. We need a man in our group.’
Callum had watched us the entire time, not really understanding what was going on. He barely twitched as Bonnie leaned over and pulled him up. She sank her teeth into his neck, letting his blood flow into her mouth. I stepped back next to Holly, trying not to breathe in his scent. As Callum went limp, Bonnie looked up. ‘I’m sorry to make you watch,’ she murmured. ‘Go and hunt. I will meet you back at the warehouse.’ As I watched, Bonnie held Callum away from her, tearing into her own skin. The sight of his blood, still warm, made me lose all control. I turned and ran after Holly, hoping to find a different easy meal.
I woke later, around 5:00. As I waited for the sun to go down, I explored the house. There were several bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as a library, a kitchen, and a conservatory. I couldn’t see why Holly needed all this space, but then, I couldn’t understand why Holly did a lot of things. It didn’t take Isaac long to wake up, but we had to wait until 8:00 for Holly. “You really are nocturnal, aren’t you?” Isaac asked over ‘breakfast.’
“Vam-py-er.” Holly said, very slowly.
“I know that,” Isaac retorted. “I am, but I’m still mot nocturnal.”
“Wait a couple hundred years, you will be.” Holly assured him. “Lets go back to Il Cansecrare. It’s fun.”
Before we had quite enough time to recover, Holly had bounced out the door, leaving us to follow at a slightly more dignified pace.
As we entered Il Cansecrare Isaac asked, “What am I supposed to do here?”
Holly gasped. “Jesus, Isaac, it’s a dance club, go flirt with someone! Dance! Sample Alcohol! Have fun! Act like a fool! There are a million possibilities.”
“I don’t dance.” Isaac said, sounding slightly resentful at her shocked voice.
“Well, pretend to dance. I am going to go talk to Callum, and it would be better if you weren’t there.” Leaving Isaac standing, shocked, by the door, Holly grabbed me and dragged me towards Callum. Leaving me at a bit of a distance, but where I could still hear, she approached him. He was wearing the same clothes as yesterday, and sitting on the same bar stool.
“So Callum,” Holly chirped, sliding in next to him, “what’ve you been up to?”
Callum glared at her before muttering, “Nothing. What do you want?”
“Just checking up on you. When did you last take a bath?’
Callum shrugged.
“You’re pathetic,” Holly spat. “You can’t even remember when you last had a bath. When have you last had something to drink?”
Callum gestured at the glass of blood in front of him.
“That’s all stale, and lame.”
“So what?” Callum snapped. “You’re not the boss of me.”
Holly sighed. “Much as I hate you, it is my duty as a friend to stop you from slipping into a drunken comatose state from which you cannot wake. I am sure Lori would agree with me. Now, I’m going to get you cleaned up. Lets go hunting.”
“No.” Callum snapped, showing the first sign of real emotion I had yet seen out of him.
“Don’t tell it’s been so long you’ve forgotten how it feels to have fresh blood? How nothing can compare to actual warm blood after a good hunt. You used to love that Callum. Now come on, let’s go” She grabbed him, attempting to drag him out of the seat.
Callum shook her off, snarling. “No I can’t. Ok?” and then more quietly, “I can’t.”
Holly stopped, surprised for the first time this evening. “Can’t, or won’t?”
The pain was visible in Callum’s voice now, as he mumbled, “Can’t. Not humans. Not anymore. Not for a while.”
“Oh.” Holly half-whispered. “Why? How long?”
“I don’t fucking know. All I know is that goddamn necromancer shows up in my dreams every night for a week, and then I can’t eat humans. Can do whatever the hell I want with them, but as soon as I lean in for the neck, it feels like my head’s about to fucking explode. I hate it. And I hate him. If he could have just hung onto the stupid orb, none of this would have happened.”
“Wow. How long had this been going on?” Holly asked again.
“Year and a half.” Callum snapped, before returning to nurse his half-finished pigs blood.
‘Excellent,” Holly breathed. ‘Finally.”
