We sat in silence for several minutes, before Isaac spoke. “What are we going to do?”
“About what?”
“Your job, and Holly and Callum being gone, and stuff. What are we going to do for money and food?”
“Oh…” I paused, thinking. “Lets move to Montana.”
“Montana? Where did that one come from? Isn’t Holly the crazy one?” He stopped, realizing what he had said.
I took a deep breath before replying, “It’s true, she’s the crazy one, but she’s gone. My plan has logic. I’ve never been to Montana though, and it sounds nice. We could get a farm, one on a big field. I could go out during the day. Maybe we’ll track down Holly and Callum in a few years, if you end up becoming a vampire. We’ll see.”
“I thought you couldn’t go out during the day.”
“We can only spend a certain amount of time out in the day. Vampires are sort of…Lunar Panels. If we spend enough time soaking up moonlight, we can go out during the day. The harsh light makes our eyes glow red, but we don’t exploded into dust or anything. After too long we would, but we can have a few hours of daylight before we have to recharge.”
“Cool. So…Montana. I’m willing to give it a try.”
So, we moved to Montana.

The next several years were the happiest of my un-life. We bought a house on the outskirts of Fort Peck, by the lake. There was a field out back, and I convinced Isaac to go to high-school. It actually took very little work; he loved to learn. I technically became his foster parent, but that didn’t mean he ever listened to me if he didn’t want to. I won most of our battles though. I got a job at a library, and eventually our life became close to normal. At times, I was almost able to forget I was a vampire. Almost.
Isaac trained in many different things. He was determined to never be beaten by a vampire again, even if he never became one. He was good, but he was hopelessly weak compared to Callum. He never admitted that was whom he wanted to beat, but I knew. Even though he spent hours practicing, what he thirsted after most was knowledge. He would devour anything he could get: magic, philosophy, psychology, sciences, math, history, plays or novels. He would become engrossed in his book and sit there, his eyes far away, not moving for hours. Both of us had to get a lot better at cooking, since I had gotten out of practice and he had never had to. If I didn’t tell him to eat, he would never have remembered. He never seemed to stop growing. It didn’t take long for him to be taller than me.
My dreams got better. I dreamed of Ivan and Charles less and less. I dreamed now of Holly, Callum, and Bonnie, but they were happy dreams, for though they brought back memories that caused me pain, they were not painful in themselves. I was glad every minute that I had decided to keep him. He healed me, and I think I healed him.
Isaac’s eighteenth birthday passed without any mention of him becoming a vampire. I was putting it off, waiting for him to get older. When Callum had been changed, he wasn’t done growing yet, and it didn’t work for him. He was forever almost an adult. It led to a lot of unpredictable mood swings. The same held true for Mikhail. I guess Isaac was different though. He was more mature than they were ever going to get. He was more mature at fourteen then they were ever going to be. Maybe I was waiting for him to realize that becoming a vampire wasn’t as good as it seemed. Maybe I was just selfish, and was enjoying how my life was to change it at all. But it couldn’t be avoided.
Barely a week after he graduated, Isaac sat down with a look in his eye that I knew well. “Lori, why haven’t you said anything about me becoming one of you? You’ve hardly mentioned it at all since we moved here. I graduated high school, what else do I have to do?”
“Isaac…is this what you want? Do you want to live forever, in nighttime, always on the outside?  To never have a wife, children, and a regular job? If you do this you never get to become a senior citizen, have grandchildren. You don’t value one day nearly as much once you live forever. This life was forced on me. I don’t want to do that to you.”
Isaac laughed. “And what if I did? What if I chose to leave? What would I say on my resume? Lived on the streets until I was fourteen and then was adopted by a crazy vampire who made me finish high school? What would I tell my wife about my in-laws? I have one relative – a half mother, half sister who never ages? How will I explain away that I can recite all the mystical poisons in the western hemisphere? That I look over my shoulder once night falls, knowing that there’s something out there that could kill me?”
“You’d manage.”
He rolled his eyes. “You’re trying to give me a choice? You never gave me a choice, ever since Callum revealed your existence. I wanted to know everything about you, ever since that moment.
“And besides,” he said, overriding my protests, “What would you do if I did choose to leave? Curl into a ball for the next 100 years and moan? I couldn’t do that to you. Give up. I’m not leaving.” He stared at me, and I knew he had made up his mind.
“Ok, I’ll change you. Soon, just not right now.”
“Good.”
