Vampire Story part 9

Callum quivered with rage. It looked like he has about to explode into a million angry little Callums. Then he punched Isaac in the face. I could tell he was holding back, but it still looked hard. Isaac fell onto the ground with a whimper. “Jesus Fucking Christ!” he bellowed. “Can’t you do anything right? All you had to do was carry the fucking thing, and you broke it!”
“He’s right, Lori. I don’t think Isaac will work with what we’re doing.” Holly was much more controlled, but I could tell she was pissed.
“No.” I said, knowing I was being ridiculous. They had a point, Isaac’s humanness wouldn’t work well with our jobs, but they had agreed to let Isaac come.
“I can’t believe this! Get rid of him, or just go away! You want me to work with the team? At least I ask their opinions!” Callum continued to rant.
“I don’t think Isaac is going to work. Make him a vampire or get rid of him.”
“No,” I said again, realizing I was pleading now. “Do you want me to leave him at the side of the road somewhere? Or kill him? I can’t do that.”
“Lori, wake up!” Holly raised her voice, angry as well now. “Whatever you do, He Is Not Ivan. All the wishing in the world isn’t going to make him. Get over it!”
I stopped. The words tore my heart apart. She had found the week spot in my armor, the subconscious decision I hadn’t even admitted to myself. “No.” I breathed, almost defeated.
“But you’re never going to. It’s been eighty years and you haven’t gotten over it. This isn’t going to work. We’re leaving. You go do your own thing, something where you can delude yourself that Isaac isn’t who you think it is. You’re not working as a thief.” Holly turned, walking away, and Callum followed her, kicking Isaac hard in the arm as he went. This time I knew I heard a crack. My knees went out from under me. “No,” I whispered again, crushed. “Please.” But they were to far away to hear.
“Lori?” Isaac asked tentatively. “Lori, we should go.” I could see a huge purple bruise spreading along his cheek. It looked painful to talk.
I took a deep breath. “Yeah, yeah, we need to leave. Is your arm ok?”
“I don’t know.” He laughed shakily. “I think it might be broken.”
“We should see a doctor.” I lifted him easily and ran, as fast as I could, towards downtown. The wind whistled in my ears as I hurried through the alleyways to the hospital.
I set him down outside the ER and walked in at a normal pace. “Wow,” Isaac breathed. “That was fast.”
“Mmhmm.” I mumbled, sitting down to wait for the nurse. Holly and Callum gone. It was something I couldn’t imagine. I had known Holly since I died. What would I do without her wit and friendship? And Callum, would I miss him? Would he add a hole to my heart, like I knew Holly would?
“Lori, who’s Ivan?”  Isaac asked, distracting me.
I wasn’t sure I wanted to talk about it. I was saved having to decide by the nurse. “So what happened here?” She asked, smiling. She looked like one of the people who would treat you like a child until you were 30.
“He um… got in a fight,” I said, trying not to make her realize a crazy angry vampire attacked him. “I think he might have a broken arm.”
“And have you put ice on it?” Her disapproving tone was clearly meant to criticize my doctoring skills.
“Er…no. We came here right away.”
“What relation do you have to him?”
I took advantage of my ‘delusions.’ “Adoptive brother. Our parents are…elsewhere.”
    “Where elsewhere?”
Isaac saved me. “Business trip.” He winced. “They work for a branch of peace corp.”
The questionnaire went on for almost fifteen minutes until she finally decided that she should X-ray Isaacs arm. Then we had to wait another half-an-hour for him to actually be X-rayed. She brought us the conclusion around to us. “Well, his arm was fractured. That was quite some fight. We’ll have to put a cast on it.”  She smiled at Isaac. “Please come into the back. This will only take a few minutes.”

It took another hour, but we finally left, after paying her an exorbitant about of money. Isaacs arm was in a cast and sling, and he looked grumpy about it. I again lifted him easily and ran back to the apartment. I was tired enough to not care where we were. I collapsed on my bed and fell into a fitful sleep full of unsettling dreams.
I sat on the bank of a river, sewing in hand. I was 13. A young boy ran up to me. ‘I’ll race you home to dinner!’ He yelled, laughing, than took off before I could say anything.
‘Ive! Wait up!’ I called after him, as I began to run. We arrived at the house panting and laughing.
‘I beat you! I beat you!‘ Ivan crowed.
‘Only because I didn’t have enough warning.’ I retorted. ‘I’m faster than you any day.”
‘Someday,’ he vowed, ‘I’ll beat you every time. Just wait until I’m bigger.’
The dream changed. I was 17. I sat in the branches of the apple tree I had played in for so many years. I was reading, snatching a rare moment of freedom from work. The leaves were just turning red, and I would soon have to return to the house, Ivan ran to fetch me, his blue eyes laughing as he found me. He had grown in the four years that had passed, but his dark hair still hung in his eyes in exactly the same way. His skinny body was tanned. He looked so different from me, but I could still tell he was my brother. I could tell it was him anywhere.
Instead of calling me to work, his words were a hundred times more welcome. ‘Charles is here!’ he yelled. ‘Come down, he’s waiting.’ Charles was the man who had been courting me for several months now, and who I loved with all my heart. I ran up to see him, glad just to be with him. His red hair was cut short, and his blue eyes met mine. The flawlessness of the moment was ruined by the news he brought of the war in Europe. More deaths, more battles. How long would it be until the United States also joined? But I did not care. I had Charles, and Ivan. My world was perfect.
Again, the dream changed. I was nineteen. I played with the ring Charles had given me only a week before. We were going to be married. This time though, the recent news of the war had troubled me. President Wilson had decided to join the war. Charles was signing on to the military. Ivan came up to me. ‘Loretta,’ he said, calling me by my full name.
I looked up, worried. No one called me that. ‘What?’
‘I’ve decided to join the army.’
‘But, you’re only fourteen. You can’t join. They won’t let you.’
‘Yes they will. They have plenty of use for me.’ His small face was earnest, with no trace of a joke on it.
‘Please, Ivan, you don’t have to do this. You don’t have to.’ I didn’t want him to go. I would be lonely without Charles and Ivan. I didn’t want them to get hurt.
‘Yes I do. I have to defend my country. It’s noble. I’ll be back in six months anyway. Don’t worry.’
I should argue more. I knew I should. But he was stubborn, and I couldn’t stop him. As he walked away I felt as if I should scream after him.
It was five months later. Letter day. But instead of Charles’ neat script and Ivan’s untidy scrawl, I received a letter neatly typed on printer paper, telling me of their deaths. Ivan’s body was the only one they recovered.
Ivan’s funeral. His face was almost unrecognizable. The bullet that had killed him had been shot through his right eye. His entire face was torn and bloody. Even washing him and dressing him in a clean uniform didn’t help. ‘No! No, Ivan! Ivan! Come back! Ivan!’ I screamed hysterically, but he couldn’t hear me. He was dead. They were dead. The tears streamed down my face, but I could still see him, clearly. I could hear him say, ‘I’ll be back in six months anyway. Don’t worry.’ ‘Oh Ivan, why did you have to come back like this? ‘Ivan!’ I screamed again, wishing I could change it. ‘Ivan!’

JoyousBug I edited this in later, so just making sure everyone knows. These vampires can't tell lies. Not a personal preference, they just can't. They gag and go all purple. I think. I'm not clear on the details yet.
