Staring off outside my balcony I watch the dull blue clouds roll by. The wind plays with my hair, twisting it in all kinds of directions. I think about how different things are now. The human race is aware of us. They know that we exist. All because of a society known as The Hitters. They video tape all their slayings. People didn’t take it seriously until they caught one alive. Showed how our teeth transformed and our eyes. That’s when people began to have curfews. When the sun went down, the town was deserted. But as humans are so predictable, they started ignoring the curfew. Us vampires were smart. For the first couple of weeks they began staying out later, we didn’t kill. We would feed on animals. This would build up their confidence to stay out even later. Soon the curfew ceased to exist. Now we try to kill the ones no one will miss. Every so often someone slips up and kills one of great importance. But that rarely happens. The Hitters have become millionaires. They have a T.V. show now. Little vampire merchandise. They are like the ghost busters only hunting vampires. Their hunters have grown from only ten people to about five thousand and counting. They run much like the police. In fact, the F.B.I. have made them part of their section. They’ve enlisted their team for five years now. When the reign of vampires increased in population. When there is a killing, The Hitters gather the evidence and track down the one responsible. Torturing them for information. Sadly, most die during the torture, if they haven’t then they kill them afterwards. They have a top ten list as well. The ones that they just can’t seem to catch. I am at the top. I have been evading them for almost twenty three years. I plan to keep it that way. Coming out of my flashback to the past I realize the sun is beginning to rise. Rolling my eyes I scamper off to my white steel coffin. Yes I slept in a coffin. Only because I am use to it from years ago. I feel secure. Laying in my red silk I watch as the top creaks closed. The light no more.
Pushing the door gently open I see the sun sinking down behind the mountains. The colors in the sky so beautiful. Oranges, purples, blues and pinks litter the sky like a stream. Evenly blending into one another. A few early stars spread out over it. Climbing out I stretch slowly. Getting ready to silence the grumble that came with in. Pushing the windows open I step out onto the balcony. Breathing in the night air I smile. Letting my fangs come out early. I was in a playful mood. Craving a chase. Wanting something different after years of sameness. The girl from last night sparking my interest in the chase once again. Grasping my coat I head down the twin stairs. The velvet carpeting softening the sounds of my footsteps. Pausing for a brief moment I glance towards the paintings. Their dull colors fading as the times change. Oh how I was glad to be what I am. Never aging, never dying. But it is a bittersweet relationship. Some parts I love, while others I despise. Being able to outlive your children. A tear begins welling up in my eye as my cold fingers slide along the faces of my children. Being hunted like an animal when we are just merely trying to survive. I begin down the steps once more, the tears sinking back, never falling. Opening one of the oak double doors I sense something in the air. Another vampire here, in my city? Impossible. There hasn’t been another for years. I think to myself as my eyes drift down the barren wet street. Street lamps shedding the only light since the moon has not risen. Walking to my car I stand looking at it. My black steed. A restoration of a Shelby GT350. All black with two grey stripes. The interior black leather with grey outlining. Hopping inside I decide to head into town this time. I don’t know why but I felt the urge to terrorize the town. I sped down the hillside into the city. The tall buildings looming over me. I park my car near a busy club. Staring at the time. 9:13 pm. The green light becoming a blur as I stare at it too hard. Readdressing my eyes to the entrance I watch as a group of girls come out giggling and laughing. Stumbling as they walk. A smirk lurks across my face. Stepping out of the vehicle I follow them. Watching the one on the far right the most. She was the one. The scent of her blood overwhelming. The blood of a virgin. Pure and sweet. Like dark chocolate for vampires. Untainted. I notice they are glancing back at me. I only give them a teasing smile. Hearing them laugh was like music to my ears. I have them. Four young girls for the taking. After a few minutes of walking they stop at the entrance to the park. Turning around under the streetlight they call me over. Smirking I set my fangs back. Jogging over with my hands in my pockets.
"So...You like what you see?" One of the girls asks. Her speech slurred from too much vodka and cranberry. The stench lingering in my nose. The others giggle. The one I want only stares. Her eyes full of uncertainty. They notice my eyes fixating on her and giggle even more.
"Well Brandon looks like he has the hots for you!" The one with purple strands through her black hair belts out. Brandon blushes. Indeed it seems she has never known a man’s touch. She tells them to shut up but they only laugh louder. The attention was too much. The louder they were the more attention it would bring to people who were walking by. My teeth ache to be let out. I smile taking the hand of Brandon. Kissing it gently.
"Pleasure to meet you Brandon." I say softly. My British tone melting their hearts. I hear her heartbeat quicken. As did the others. Women have a thing for accents. I’m not sure why, but it works for me. They giggle once more, two of the girls almost falling. I catch them by the arm and help them to get their balance. The wind picking up sent shivers down their spines as none of them were wearing any jackets. Brandon still seems unsure her eyes scanning my body. Trying to read what my intentions are.
"Jackie I think I’m going to head home." She tells them. Giving them a quick smile. My eyes narrow in frustration as I watch her hurry off down the sidewalk. Leaving me with the drunk ones. Turning my attention back towards them I give them a wink. Their hearts fluttering, I take them by the arms, ushering them into the dark wooded park. They skip ahead of me as I continue to smile, my fangs bursting out of my gums. Ready for the thrill. The girls change from a skip into a run. Yelling to me ‘catch me if you can’. Laughing myself I knew they have done my work for me. Closing my eyes I listen to their shoes hit the grass. Their heartbeat pounding louder with each stride. Opening my eyes I change my vision to thermal imaging. The ice blue coloring changing to a reddish orange. Stalking down the pathway I use my ears, nose and eyes to hunt for my prey. I like this type of hunting. It sharpens my senses. Makes my skills that much better. Looking up towards the trees I see the red outline of birds. Stopping I turn my attention to the left of me. A quiet giggle was all it took. Seeing a hand and foot outlined behind the blue hue of a tree I dart in her direction. Silently I come to the left of her. Her attention not on me. Slipping my hand around her neck she lets out a sharp gasp. When she realizes it me she starts laughing. I thrust her body into the tree. Her feet a few inches from the ground.
"Woah. You’re a little frisky aren’t you." She laughs her purple strands falling into her face. Almost liking the harshness. I press my body against hers so I can hold her up, my fingertip rubbing against her neck and collarbone. I lean in licking around her jugular. It pounds against my tongue. The scent of pleasure rising from her pores. Her legs wrap around my waist. Giving herself added support. A few moans can be heard as I continue to play with her. My tongue whipping across her flesh tickling her ear lobe. I let my teeth graze across her neck. Making sure to not break the skin just yet. I could feel her thigh muscles tighten. Her hands grasping my back. My hands rubbing her buttocks. She begins to moan a little more. Each one a bit louder then the last. I couldn’t risk the others to hear so I bit down. Slowly my teeth sink in like a straw being pushed into a cup. Her moans are still heard until I let my bottom teeth jab her neck. The blood flow hastening. Once she realizes I am what I am it was too late. Her cries for help became muffled by gurgles of blood that pours out. Her legs go limp from around me and slide off. I press my body firmly against hers. Feeling the warmth slowly die. When I was finished I watch her body slump to the cold ground beneath her. My eyes inferno red. The sign that I have feasted. Prowling once more for my second victim I wipe the blood from my face. Spotting her in an instant I rush to the tree tops. Patiently waiting for her to walk under me. I could sense the worry in her as she searches for her friends. As she passes under me I growl, leaping from the branches onto her. Feeling a few bones break as we hit the ground. She cries out in pain. Cursing me.
"What the fuck dude! That wasn’t funny! I think I broke my arm." She yells at me in fear and anger. I laugh as I watch the tears run down her face. Her hand reaches out for me to help her up but I only slap it away. Her face then shows confusion. Sitting down on top of her I pull her hair away from her neck. Leaning down I run my nose across her skin, getting the smell of her blood. Testing whether it would be good to drink. "Okay man. This is not the time to get kinky. I need to go to the hospital." Her voice shaking as she says it. I let out a low laugh as I lunge down on her neck. Taking in the fluid that bursts out. She doesn’t even scream. Only a quiet gasp.
"Oh my god! Cindy!" I hear her cry out behind me. Looking behind me I see Jackie. Horrified at what she has seen. Her friend’s blood dripping from my mouth. My red eyes burning through the darkness. She turns running, screaming out to anyone to hear. Smiling I take off running after her. Turning my eyes green I see her ahead of me. She looks back every few seconds to try and see if she can see me. But with it being pitch black and no lights she didn’t even know I was only a few feet away. Her breathing echoing in my ears. Her heartbeat feeding my hunger even more. For a human she ran pretty fast but that speed could not be kept up. She began slowing a bit, her hand delving into her pocket. I quicken my pace as she pulls out a phone dialing 911. Grasping her arm she screams no. We tumble to the ground. I collide with a tree, a few leaves falling to the ground. Shaking my head I look over. Jackie lay still. Her cellphone still in her hand. A staticy voice on the other end. Breathing in deep I look at my leg. The bone protrudes out, blood escaping. Damn. Hearing a voice I look back over at Jackie. She is telling the operator what has happened. Tears streaming down her face. Looking around she doesn’t notice I am leaning against the tree. Wanting so badly to attack her. Every time I move the pain intensifies. I watch as she runs towards the direction of her dead friend. Grabbing on to the tree bark I help my self up. Limping away. Angry because I had to let a kill go. The first time in many years this has happened.
