Chapter 2
Fear gripped Charlotte like a fierce hand at her throat. What had just happened? Was this for real? The person on the other end just kept breathing so hard. She wanted to say hello but all she could manage was a squeak. Suddenly there was a click and then a dial tone. He hung up. Just like that, without a word he was gone. “This is just a joke. Just a joke.” She told herself. Sam was obviously still mad at her. She chased away any fears she may have had and forced herself to press the redial button. She was sure Sam would answer and laugh in her face. She, atleast, hoped so.
The phone rang for several minutes and then Kendra’s answering machine came on. Charlotte began to feel the panic arise and her pulse vibrate once more. What if something was really wrong? Should she go over there or just call the police? She asked herself over and over until finally she decided she was sure it was just a joke and she was going to find out once in for all. Kendra only lived a few blocks down so charlotte would be there in no time. She slipped on her Rainbow sandals and her brown leather jacket she just got from her sister for her 25th birthday, she headed out the door.
Her neighbor’s cat met her outside in the hallway looking for some affection. “Not now Blackus. I’ll be back in a bit.”
It was so cold. She tugged hard at her jacket for extra warmth but the air still seemed to penetrate her insides. Leaving her hair to stand on end with those goosebumps that traveled down her arms and legs. She could see Kendra’s apartment door just ahead. It was dark and looked deserted. She hoped she hadn’t missed them. She had a few choice words she wanted to get out. Slowly she took each step one by one. In the back of her mind she was still afraid of that phone call and it was almost as if she was expecting something to jump out and yell “Boo!”
The door was left slightly open. She knocked anyway out of courtesy. “Hello?” There was nothing. Just silence … darkness. With an urge she had to force, she stepped into the building. “Hello? Sam, are you here? Anyone home…Kendra? Sam?”
Still there was nothing. And she couldn’t see anything as well. She felt around on the left side for a light switch. After a moment of searching and feeling, she found it and flipped it.
