The Mysterious Noise
|
The piercing whine struck her ears and seemed to cross the room, directly through her head. It cut straight through to her brain, ruining any chance of concentration or thoughts on anything but the pain. She waited, enduring it silently, hoping the whine would dwindle down soon and fade into the drone of her teacher’s voice. There was no relief; no other student seemed to suffer from the sound.
Her ears began to feel the familiar sensation she felt when her music was too loud and she thought her ears were bleeding. She wondered if maybe, eventually her ears would bleed, it certainly felt like it. The pain kept up a constant agony, if it didn’t stop soon she would cry out and risk everyone staring at her and thinking she was crazier than most already did. Briefly, she worried the look on her face would give away her mysterious ailment, but she was beyond caring or trying to control it.
Then, just as suddenly as its appearance, it cut out. She gasped, causing a couple people to give her looks before ignoring her again. As she unclenched her hands she saw small amounts of blood pooled in half moons along her palms,
“That was intense” she murmured and snapped her eyes back onto the teacher hoping to look deeply engrossed in his words. But her mind continued to wonder what the sound could have been and why only she was the one to hear it….
