I toss and turn. I settle for just a minute, then my alarm sounds. I switch it off, yet remain in bed staring at the ceiling. I hear footsteps near my door, and look at my brother as he steps into my room.

Colin- “You getting up?”

Me- “Eventually”

Colin- “You have to go”

Me- “I know”

He walks back out the room, shutting the door quietly. I stay under the covers until I muster the courage to step out of bed.

I select a pair of black trousers, black heels and a white blouse accompanied with a tailored black jacket. I get my best waterproof mascara, knowing that any other make-up would just end up running down my face.

I go to switch on my hair straighteners for my wig, but I’m stopped.

I liked your hair curly

I turn and give Steve a weak smile. He gives me a gorgeous one back- straight teeth and perfect lips, but with a…

Me- “When did you get your lip pierced?”

Do you like it?

Me- “And your hair is darker- when did you get highlights put in?”

You haven’t answered my question

Me- “You remind me of someone… I can’t quite place it”

Colin- “You ready to go?”

I turn to my door, and Colin is standing there holding his car keys. I look back to Steve, but he’s gone again. My face falls.

Me- “As ready as I’ll ever be.”

Colin dropped off me and Rachel at the church. It’s a very bleak day- the sky is overcast with lumpy, grey clouds. I feel the rain lightly spit on my face as I walk through the large, wooden doors.

The church is packed with people. I recognise some of them. Rachel slides along to the end of the back row and I slip next to her. I take hold of her hand and squeeze it lightly as a small tear trickles down her face.

A hand reaches across me and passes Rachel a tissue. I look up, and Ellie is sitting next to me. Her arm is in a sling and she has a nasty black eye and cut lip. I look her up and down, but there seems to be nothing else wrong with her. She beams at me.

Ellie- “Hi Abi!”

Me- “Er… hi”

Ellie- “Is that all I get?”

Me- “I’m a bit shocked. When I saw you at the hospital you looked on the brink of death”

Ellie- “Not at all- they though I had ‘internal bleeding’ and a ruptured… foot or something, I don’t know the exact medical term for it. But it turns out I was just a bit bruised. I’m absolutely fine- thank God!”

Rachel and I stare at her. Ellie seems so happy and chirpy considering she’s burying her boyfriend today.

Ellie- “I wasn’t expecting to see you here- what with you being an absolute bitch to Steve”

Me- “Excuse me?”

Ellie- “I can’t believe you accused him of rape though! Telling him all those lies about you being pregnant and having his children and miscarrying or something ridiculous”

Me- “I never said that!”

Ellie- “I really wonder how Steve could possibly still even look at you after that- you destroyed him after all. You really are a cow- you don’t deserve to be here!”

Me- “I THINK IT IS YOU WHO DOESN’T DESERVE TO BE HERE YOU LYING BITCH!”

The entire church turns and faces me. As I glance at all the disapproving faces, I realise the service has begun- but come to a holt because of my outburst. I sink a little into my chair, and the priest resumes.

Ellie- “I don’t know what you’re talking about”

Me- “You know exactly what I’m talking about- I know you didn’t tell the police what really happened”

Ellie- “How childish of you Abi- first of all, you have absolutely no proof, and second of all no one will believe your pathetic little statement. Everyone here knows what you did to Steve. You’ll be the attention seeking girl who cried wolf”

With that, Ellie briskly gets up and slips out of our row. She walks around the back to get to the door- but on the way, she bends down and whispers to me “nice wig” and pulls it away from my head. I grip on and pull it back into place as discreetly as I can, as she waltzes out of the church door.

As the coffin is carried out of the church, I spot Ellie standing next to the freshly dug grave. She sniffs hysterically as the coffin is buried. I glance at the headstone reading “R.I.P Steven Riches” and I stiffen. Steve hates being called Steven- anyone who’s known him more than five minutes knows that! The coffin is slowly lowered, and I stare at it. I’m unable to believe he’s gone. I look up, and my suspicions are confirmed. Steve is leaning against a tree scoffing at his name on the headstone. He has unfinished business here. He nods at me, and I understand.

As Steve’s friends and family slowly melt away, Ellie and I are the only ones remaining at the graveside. I glare at her as the mud arrives to be piled on top of Steve.

Ellie- “He really did hate you. I tried to convince him to forgive you, but he seemed adamant that you were just a little whore who wasn’t worth the time of day ”

She turns on her heel and begins to strut away in her tiny red mini skirt and black halter neck top. I grab a hold of a clump of hair and pull to force her to face me.

Me- “I know you lied. I know it wasn’t an accident. You killed Steve and I don’t care if people don’t believe me, I don’t care if Steve hated me- I want you to suffer for what you did to my best friend! I will find a way to prove it- even if it kills me!”

I let go and she glares at me. Ellie spits at my feet and walks off. I stare after her, reeling in shock after our confrontation.

I turned to leave when suddenly lights appeared through the trees of the graveyard. Loud sirens rang in my ears as numerous police cars piled into the cramped church car park. Steve’s parents come running down to the car park. There are some raised voices, and Steve’s mum eventually gives in and leaves the police. They climb up the hill leading to his grave and order the diggers to stop, shouting that they ‘have a warrant’.

Me- “What’s going on?”

Policeman- “And you are?”

Me- “I’m… Steve’s sister”

Policeman- “Sure you are, lil lady”

He continues up the hill, but I grab a hold of his arm and stop him.

Me- “WAIT, please! Steve is… was my best friend. I just wanna know what’s happening”

Policeman- “I shouldn’t be telling you this, but we found new evidence in Steve’s car. We are re-opening the case.”

Me- “So what are you doing here?”

Policeman- “We’re exhuming the body. We have reason to believe that the crash wasn’t an accident. It might have been murder…”
