After P.E, I had to go to the hospital. I kissed Jamie goodbye quickly and walked to my mum’s car.
Mum- “Hey sweetie- you look happier”
I beam.
Me- “I got back with Jamie”
Mum- “That’s great hunni, spending time with people you love”
She focuses on the road- not even glancing at me. She’s being a bit weird- she’s smiling, yet it seems like her mouth is independent from the rest of her face.
Me- “What do you mean by that?”
Mum- “Nothing darling, I just think it’s nice that you’re living your life”
There’s a very awkward silence as everything clicks into place. My eyes begin to well up again as I realise what she’s really saying.
Me- “You think I’m going to die, don’t you?”
She breathes deeply- still with her eyes on the road. I look away from her and stare out the window to the hospital while she parks. My own mother has given up on me. The woman who gave me life is the same woman already considering me to be on death row.
I get out of the car and slam the door. I walk into the hospital- my head in another world. I always thought I’d get better so I never considered death. I’m too young right? The universe isn’t that cruel right? Things are going so well: my friends are great- especially Hazz- and Jamie’s back in my life and my family are fantastic.
Then again, think about it. It’s perfect really- a happy, healthy girl becomes suddenly struck down with cancer and dies leaving her boyfriend behind in the mess.
My mum doesn’t follow me as I go to see the doctors. I’m having my first session of radiotherapy as Dr Rouse managed to pull some strings. I don’t want to be alone, but I don’t want to be with my mother. Why would I want to have life saving treatment whilst in the same room with the woman who believes I’m as good as dead anyways?
I’m gonna be fine
I’m gonna be fine
I’ll be fine
Right?
I’m lead into a very bright, white room with a single bed and robe. I suddenly become very nervous. I remove my wig and settle on the bed, waiting for someone to tell me when the machine will be ready for me.
I finger my mobile. I need someone just to be with me. I look at the clock- 12pm. Lunchtime. I dial Jamie’s number.
Jamie- “Hi lil Panda- how you doing?”
Me- “Hey! I was just wondering, are you free for the next couple of hours?”
Jamie- “Yeah sure- I have a free period after lunch. What do you need?”
I take a deep breath.
Me- “I’m having some treatment- do you mind sitting with me?”
Jamie- “Of course I don’t! I’ll be right over- are you sure OK?”
Me- “I’m fine, see you soon”
I hang up before he questions me more. I really am awful at lying. I lay down on the bed staring at the bare ceiling. I listen to some music.
You’re just too good to lose
and I can’t refuse
Don’t make me choose
between the two
I’m fed up in here, in my atmosphere
Don’t you know who you are, you’re my shooting star…
I must have drifted to sleep, when I wake up Jamie’s sitting on the bed holding my hand.
Jamie- “You ready?”
Me- “Ready as I’ll ever be”
And he stays with me. The entire time, even when he had to sit outside while I was being probed and poked at by the doctors. But finally, we’re allowed to go. We walk towards the exit holding hands.
Jamie- “How are you feeling?”
Me- “Weird”
Jamie- “How long you gotta have it for?”
Me- “Until about Christmas, then the doctors will see if it actually made a difference. If it worked then I’m cured but if it doesn’t then…”
DON’T FINISH THAT SENTENCE
Me- “Did we get homework from maths? I feel like I’m forgetting something”
He laughs at me and pulls me close so his arm is draped across my back with his hand resting on my waist.
Jamie- “Smooth subject change Abi”
Me- “Thanks- it’s an art really”
I look up and smile at him. He leans down and kisses me softly on my lips while we walk. I stop walking and just embrace the moment, as my darling mother would say, “living my life”. But I don’t think about that- I’m too happy as Jamie lightly pushes my back towards him so our chests are pressed together. We remain in the doorway for quite some time, before…
“EXCUSE ME- OUT OF THE WAY!” Three paramedics suddenly come racing through the doors knocking me away from Jamie. I look at the bloody, messy, stretchers they’re pushing and pulling towards a set of double doors. Doctors come running from every direction, following the route of the paramedics. Some are just barking orders out in what seems like a foreign language, whilst others are holding up IV fluid or squeezing breathing bags.
There’s an awful silence before another ambulance arrives. A girl is pushed through the doors first. “ANOTHER CAR CRASH VICTIM! Eleanor Roberts, 16, asthma sufferer, suspected fracture to both legs and collar bone, she needs a CT scan urgently- suspected ruptured spleen…” They disappear round the corner.
Me- “Oh my God”
Jamie- “What?”
Me- “That’s Steve’s ex… though Rachel said they got back together-”
“WE NEED SOME HELP OVER HERE!” Another paramedic and three doctors burst through the doors. One is sitting on the boy’s stomach, pushing up and down violently on his chest. Another doctor is squeezing an air bag whilst the other is squeezing on a bag of blood and IV fluid.
“RESUS NOW! Steven Riches, 17, the last car crash victim. Trauma to the head and spine- we need an x-ray straight away, he was complaining of numbness in his legs before he went unconscious. Suspected punctured lung and internal bleeding- his stomach is very rigid. He stopped breathing in the ambulance and is now in cardiac arrest WE NEED THE CRASH TROLLEY OVER HERE”
“I’ve lost a pulse!”
“I can’t find a vein”
My mind goes blank. The world slows down as I take in everything. When it finally hits me, the chaos is just about to disappear.
