After I left the court of the gods I was taken to an apartment. It was all-white, and they dressed me in white, to match the decor, I guessed.

Not that it mattered. For someone who was supposed to be such a powerful goddess, nobody bothered to even listen to my complaints for even a second. After the deed was done, they left.

I was alone for who knows how long. In Earth time, it might have been a week. I wasn't given anything to eat or drink, but I was never hungry or thirsty. I was bored, though, and I passed the time reading books from the enormous bookcase in my apartment. They were all biographies of the gods and goddesses.

I read an entire shelf that week. Despite the fact that I had never liked books, least of all biographies, I found them endlessly fascinating. Then I was called back to the court.

It was empty this time, except for the king and the queen.

"Enkrysa," they said, beckoning me forward. "Welcome."

I took one step and I was instantly standing before them.

"Right," I said. "Would you mind calling me Briana? I'm used to that."

They took no notice of this.

"Enkrysa," the queen said, her vivid, pale blue eyes flashing. "You have passed this time reading the histories of some of the gods here, yes?"

That was not a question.

"What did you learn?"

"Um . . . well . . ." My memory suddenly failed me. It had been fine a moment ago. I tried desperately to remember something. "I learned that the god Akir drove his car off a bridge when he was nineteen, and ---"

"She hasn't learned," the king said, staring at me.

The queen narrowed her eyes. "Is that all? Are there any . . . patterns you have noticed in their lives?"

I thought for a moment. "Well . . . all of them died young, and all of them were sent back to Earth for a while."

The king leaned back in his throne. The queen nodded. "Better."

I suddenly felt like I used to feel when I would get a rare correct answer in class.

"Now, Enkrysa," the king said, standing up and pacing, "you will join them."

"What?" I said.

"You will be sent to Earth," he said.

"To do what?"

They looked at me.

"You are . . . to observe."

"Sounds boring." I regretted it the instant I said it.

As one, they narrowed their eyes.

"Perhaps," the queen said. "But some things can only be learned through experience."

I was afraid to ask what she meant.

"We commission you, we send you, now go!" they shouted as one, and instantly the throne room disappeared and I was falling, falling . . .
