Cam’s eyes fluttered open. A dull pain seeping through her head and staying behind her eyes. Groaning, she rolled over and found herself in her bed. She didn’t remember going to bed. Hell she didn’t even remember anything from when she got home from Lohin’s house. Lohin! She thought, the last few events slamming back into her head with perfect clarity. "Ugh." She moaned, hand resting on her forehead as she glanced at her alarm clock. The bright green neon numbers read 3:57. The little dot in the top indicating A.M. "Wonderful." She mumbled. It was 3:57 -well 3:58 now- in the morning and she hadn’t completed any homework. "Maybe mom will let me stay home tomorrow." Cam thought out loud, rolling over on to her side to hide from the neon glare.
"Cameron!" Her mom called from downstairs. "Cameron! Are you going to school today or not?! If you are you’re late!" Her mother’s voice sounded like nails on a chalkboard to Cam as she grumbled under her breath and slid out of bed.
"No mom!" She called back, gripping her head and marching down the stairs to the first floor. Her mom was in the kitchen, briefcase in hand, one shoe on one shoe off.
"Well that’s fine." Her mom said, "Feeling better?"
"A bit." Cam muttered, figuring she had fainted. Seemed like the most logical explanation.
"That’s good." Her mom said, giving her a kiss on the cheek. "I’ll be home around 9 tonight. We’ll be having a late meeting." Cam’s mom said before leaving.
Cam nodded, shuffling to the living room where she turned on the TV and switched the channel to the cartoon station. Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends was on and Cam smirked, as Blue rounded a corner and bumped into Mac. Cam could hear her mom pull away and head down the street. Cam sighed slightly, "Now what am I going to do all day?" Her eyes drifted to her backpack still next to the dining room table and for once she scowled, not wanting to do homework.
Events from last night still played in the back of her head like a horrible movie. How could she be a fairy? How? That just wasn’t possible. But believing that Lohin is one is all hunky dory? She thought. "Shut up." She muttered to herself. What the Eldric’s had told her matched what her mom had said, only her mom was still in the fog about everything. Cam knew what had really happened or at least, she thought she did. According to the Eldric’s, her dad had been a royal Fairy and he had come to the Human world to investigate how we had lived, but had fallen in love with her mother. Not something liked in the Fairy world, but excepted when you were royal. When her father had found out that his wife was pregnant he was happy, excited about an heir. Except a few nights after she was born, news came from her father’s home land, speaking of disaster and tyranny. Her father had rushed home immediately, leaving a note for his wife, hoping that she would understand. The Eldric’s had been there when the uproar had happened, and knew of how much her father wanted to return to see his wife but couldn’t. He could only watch through a Seer glass as his daughter, Cam herself, grew up without him.
"So you’re saying that my dad’s still alive?" Cam asked, eyes wide.
Lohin nodded, "Yes, your father is still alive. He can’t wait to met you Cam. He’ll be at our engagement party."
"That’s great!" Cam said, anxious to finally meet her father. "Can I bring my mom?"
Lohin’s parents faces fell. "Sorry dear." Lohin’s mother said. Cam had learned her name was Talii. Lohin’s fathers name was Valtir. "But your father will look no different from when he was here seventeen years ago. When one is in the realm of Fairies they do not age. He will still look 21 as when he met your mother."
"Oh." Cam said quietly, "Does that mean I won’t age either?"
Lohin nodded, "When you pass over you will forever look 18. It’s only when you come to the Human world that we age, but that’s only if we stay here a long time."
Cam shuddered to herself. When she turned 18 and the engagement was for real, she’d be heading to the Fairy world at the end of the year to get married to Lohin. Amazing how she wasn’t as freaked out about the whole thing as she had been only the day before. Maybe fainting cleared her mind and made everything seem not so weird. "Yeah, right." She said, turning the MUTE off as Fosters came back on. The phone rang and Cam sighed, rolling off the couch and ran to grab the phone before the answering machine picked up. "Hello?" She asked, walking back to the couch.
"Cam?" Lohin’s voice filled her ear.
"Yeah?" She asked, surprised.
"You’re not coming to school today?"
"No, not feeling so hot. I’ll be there tomorrow though."
There was a slight pause on the other end and Cam was going to ask if Lohin was there when his voice flooded through the receiver again. "Right. Are you okay with everything that we told you yesterday?"
"Surprisingly, yes." She admitted.
"That’s good." Lohin answered and Cam could hear a bell ring in the background. "Well, I’ve got to go. I’ll see you later then."
"Bye Lohin." She stated before they hung up and Cam placed the phone on the coffee table.
Three hours later, Cam was still in front of the TV, except now her Trig homework was in front of her. Scribbling down equations, she answered them quickly. All Cam’s other homework was already finished, Trig was the last one. "Done." She stated, placing her pencil down on the coffee table and sighing. "No I can go back to watching some toons." She said happily, scooting back onto the couch, leaving her things where they were and flipping the TV back on.
The afternoon sped by and then night came and Cam had hardly moved from the couch. She enjoyed doing nothing for most of the day, though she knew she would be packed with homework the next day and have to work double time to get it all done. She would also have to make up a detention, something she wasn’t really looking forward too, except for maybe the fact that Lohin would be there and she could talk to him.
Her phone hadn’t rung once all day since Lohin had called her that morning and during a commercial she glanced at it. Biting her bottom lip, she sighed and picked the phone up. Scanning through the Caller ID she found Lohin’s number and hit the TALK button on her phone.
One ring. . .
Two rings. . .
Three rings. . .
Four rings. . .
Answering machine.
Sighing as the automatic voice started and told her to wait until the beep to leave a message or just hit 1. Hitting one, Cam heard the beep automatically and cleared her throat.
"Hey Lohin. . . It’s me, Cam. Just wondering what you were doing." She paused, "And, uh, was wondering if you wanted to go to the movies or something? That way when we spring the whole engagement thing people won’t be so surprised if they think we had been dating first." She paused again, "Call me back when you get this. Thanks."
Hanging up, Cam tossed the phone at the other end of the couch towards her feet and wrinkled her nose. "I sounded so dumb." She mumbled to herself, changing the channel to number 4 and turning the DVD player on.
Standing, Cam scanned through her collection of DVD’s until she found one she felt like watching. Sliding the DVD case out of the covering she opened it and placed the Kill Bill DVD into the DVD player and hit the OPEN/CLOSE button before sitting back on the couch, DVD remote in hand. Hitting the MAIN MENU button the remote, Cam then hit the PLAY button and waited as the movie started up.
