YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
“Good morning Ms. Leytil!” A computerized voice said. “Welcome to November 18, 2029, and Happy Birthday!”
I awoke with a start, sitting up, I looked around a room that wasn’t my own and stared at the piece of technology that must have been malfunctioning since it told me that was asleep for twenty years! I guess I must have been wrong because then a maid came in and said “Oh it looks like you are finally awake, my poor mistress!”
First thing I thought was who is she, and why did she call me ‘her mistress’? The next thought I voiced aloud.
“How long have I been asleep?” I stretched.
“It has been twenty years, madam; the master has been checking in on you everyday to see if you were awake and if not awake then at least breathing.
“He was so worried that you would never wake.”
“Wow! He cares! Silly question: Is this master of yours named Kaden Allen?”
“Yes, madam, the master is indeed Mr. Kaden Allen. The same man that proposed to you years ago. Right now he is working at the school.” I moved to the mirror and looked at a body that wasn’t mine twenty years ago. I was now 5’7” and my hair was all the way down to the back of my knees. My eyes were the same color and the nose was the same. My voice was a teeny bit deeper and now croaky from lack of usage when I was asleep. Even though my height, my hair, and other things changed, I could still recognize the same girl that was just nineteen in my now thirty nine year old body. Geena, the maid who I talked to only seconds before, came behind me carrying some clothes that when I tried them on, they fit perfectly.
“If you wish to see the master, you can drive the Porsche to Sussex Technical High School. He has been an English teacher there for the last ten years after a guy named Mr. Schneck retired.”
“Oh okay. Geena. I will visit after I get some food in me and get dressed”
“Very good, madam”
“Geena?”
“Yes, madam”
“Please call me Caire instead of madam in the future.”
“All right….Caire” So I got dressed into this beautiful gray pantsuit, ate a breakfast of Life: Extended™ (Guaranteed to extend your life!) and a glass of freshly pressed (button) Apple Juice. After that experience I made sure that I looked halfway decent before I got in the Porsche and headed off to the school that I felt I just left.
The whole layout of the school didn’t change drastically. The trailer classrooms of my time now had the classrooms connected to the main building, and the busses instead of staying stationary on the ground now hovered. I parked in a relevantly good space, walked into the building passing the Attendance Office and the library, walked down the long corridor of the 800 wing and stopped outside classroom 846, his classroom.
Without stopping to rethink things I stepped inside the classroom and waited off to the side since he had only five minutes before his planning period. In those five minutes I observed how things have changed. The laptops no longer had screens and could be re-adjustable. The students used these weird looking devices that they used to input their answers and send them to their teacher. When the period ended, the students took their laptops and went on their way to the next period. When he checked over the answers his students sent in all he could do was shake his head.
“It scares me how they lose all their creativity as the years pass and the more technology gets lodged into their brains.” Then he smiled. “Nice to see you finally awake, Caire”
“Thanks Kaden, oh and thanks for making sure that I was okay and still alive.”
“It’s the least I can do for my fiancée.”
“I guess you kept your promise.” I said with a smile.
“What promise?” he asked clearly confused.
“The promise that you would love me after 20 years! I just find it a bit surprising. I mean you could have gone back on your word and married someone else and maybe had at least one child by now. Instead you took care of someone you wish to marry even if they might never wake up.”
“Caire don’t you remember what I said?” He asked shaking his head.
“I will love you always and forever” we said in unison. He smiled and I couldn’t help but hug him.
“I missed you terribly, my dear, even though I saw you everyday it wasn’t the same. I missed your personality and your funny facial expressions!” said he while stroking my back. I stepped back in the circle of his arms and looked him straight in the eyes. He was still the same Kaden that I remembered from 20 years ago other than his black hair was longer and he was still 2” taller than me. It was then that my head started to throb.
“Umm…do you mind if I visit the Nurses’ Office? I have a huge headache that I tried to ignore and now my head is throbbing.”
“Okay honey it is in the same place when you went to school. I might not be here when you get back since I have some stuff to do before my next class.”
“Okay.”
