A Musician's Song: Ch.5 - To Be So Close
|
Logan drove his rental car up his old driveway, breathing in the fresh Florida air. He got out and straightened out his black beater as he walked around the car to the porch. After a couple knocks his mom appeared in the door. Her face, aged with worry lines and pale skin. Her once beautiful hair was turning gray and she looked very tired. Her eyes teared up and she gasped, "My baby boy... you've come home." Logan moved his sunglasses to the top of his head and he smiled, "Hey mah' how's life treating you?" He opened the screen door and embraced her in a hug.
Rene's hair blew in the wind as she drove around the unfamiliar place. Six years have gone by and all of a sudden nothing seamed like it was when she left. The small market around the corner from her house had been turned into a adult store and the library was all boarded up. 'This place really went to hell...' She thought, noticing all the negative changes since she left.
"You stopped writing and I was afraid you..." His mom wiped a tear from her cheek, "I thought you died Logan.... how come you stopped writing?" He sighed, "I was coming home mah' I didn't get the chance to write back." "So scaring your mother is worth the trip home?" She asked, drinking some of her coffee. Logan laughed, "Well I'm here aren't I?" She shook her head, "That's not the point Logan." He nodded, "Yeah Yeah, I get it." There was a deep cough then a man emerged from the dark hallway. He rubbed his tired eyes and looked from Logan to Logan's mom. "Holy shit." The man chuckled, "Logan? Is that you?" Logan looked at his mom then back at the beer belly grease pig. He rose and studied him closely, "Hugh?" The man chuckled even harder, causing him to cough uncontrollably. He finally stopped and grinned his yellow smile, "Yes Sir, it's me. Look at you boy, you got bigger muscles than before when you broke my nose." Logan slightly nodded, clenching his fist, "Just imagine what I could do to you now..." Hugh laughed and nodded, "Still haven't changed a bit have you? I thought the army is supost to change the person..." Logan shrugged, "Everyone changes, just because they still don't tolerate grease pigs like you doesn't mean we didn't change." Hugh shook his head, "I'm not going to listen to you call me names boy..." "Both of you stop it..." His mom muttered, lighting a cigarette. Logan cracked his neck and crossed his arms, "And just what are you going to do to stop me?"
Pulling up to her old house, Rene stared at the faded red brick. She heard kids laughing and knew they were enjoying the crystal clear pool. The front door opened and a thin lady walked out onto the porch. Shielding her eyes from the sun she smiled, "Can I help you?" Rene got out of her car and waved, "Sorry, I didn't mean to intrude... I lived here six years ago and just drove by to look at the place, I haven't been to Florida since I left." The lady waved for her to come in, "Please, come in." Rene nodded, "Thank you." She entered the air conditioned home and looked around at the changed rooms. Just then, she remembered when Logan and her sat at the kitchen table the day before she left. They had just came downstairs after their romantic moment and they sat together in the kitchen, holding hands underneath the table. He had this look in his eye like she was the only girl in the world that he loved. "Are you alright?" The kind woman asked, snapping Rene out of the flashback. Rene slightly nodded, "Yeah sorry, just...many memories." The woman smiled and led her to the backyard.
Logan drove down the street, away from his house. His knuckles, already bruising. He slightly shook his head. Pulling into the bar parking lot, he got out and locked the car. Brushing the dust from the gravel road off his camo pants, he entered the bar. Clinking of glasses filled the air followed by laughter and the sound of pool balls colliding. Logan crawled on top of a stool and the bar tender walked over. "Well, what do I do the honor?" He asked. Logan stared at him confused. "You have dog tags, you in the army?" He asked. Logan slightly nodded, "Was." The bartended extended out his hand and Logan shook it. "Drinks on the house." The bartended kindly muttered, filled a shot glass with hard rum and returned to other customers. Logan held up the glass to thank him then poured it down his throat. Gritting his teeth, he slammed it back down and bit into a lemon.
Rene pulled into the bar parking lot and parked next to a nice black kia. She armed her rental car and started to walk away when she heard her name. "Rene?" A voice gasped. Rene turned to see Britney wide-eyed and jaw dropped. "Britney!" Rene smiled. "Oh my god!" Britney exclaimed, running over and hugging her. "I can't believe you're here!" She almost screamed. Rene laughed and pulled away, "I decided to visit town... the reunion's on Monday." Britney nodded, "Where you staying?" She shrugged, "Hotel." "No!" Britney gasped, "You're most certainly are not. You're going to stay with me." "And who else?" Rene asked, raising an eyebrow. Britney shrugged, "My boyfriend and little girl, that's about it." "You have a little girl!" Rene gasped. Britney nodded, "Yeah, she'll be 5 next week." "Jeese," Rene sighed, "I did miss alot." Britney nodded, "So, you want to go get something to eat? I actually don't feel like drinking today, I want to catch up with you." Rene shrugged, "Sure." "We'll take my car." Britney explained, turning on her heel and walking across the gravel. Rene followed, glancing at the black kia next to her rental car. Black's Logan's favorite color.
"I think I'm going to call it a night." Logan explained, pushing the shot glass towards the bartender, "I am after all driving myself." The bartender nodded, "See you around Logan?" Logan nodded and slowly rose, stretching out. There was giggling and a table of girls were admiring his muscles. The bartended softly chuckled and patted Logan's shoulder, "Goodnight." Logan smiled and waved, "Night ladies." They all gasped, shocked as if he didn't look like he talked. He walked outside, the air had gotten cooler. There was a car next to his that wasn't there before. He glanced at it as he walked over to his black kia. Unlocking the doors, he got in. The sun reflected off something and Logan shielded his eyes. He looked to see a ring hanging from the car's mirror. It was hanging by a silver chain. Probably worn around some girls neck to show she's already taken. He shrugged, started the car and pulled away.
