"What do you mean he got away?"

Thorn quickly looked away from the man seated behind the large oak desk.  Her nostrils filled with the scent of decaying paper and dust that lingered in the old run-down library of the ancient mansion that was her home.  

Kane repeated his question, and Thorn turned to answer him.

"I told you, Kane. I was held up by Tetra, and by the time I got rid of him, the human was gone!" She let out a frustrated sigh.

"And I told you, 'no mistakes' that this was a top priority mission. " He said calmly.

"Kane... I,"

"Just get that human Thorn." His tone signaled the end of the conversation, and Thorn was escorted out of the library by two disgruntled looking mancipals.

"So, i'm guessing it didn't go so well?" The voice of her friend Sarah echoed in the empty hallway.

"You guessed correctly." Anger welled up inside of Thorn. How could she have let him get away? He was only a human. One simple, inferior human. And her, a vampire. Faster, stronger, a hunter. She had failed her mission, and that would forever hang over head.

Sensing her friends anger, Sarah quickly changed the subject.

"Hey, why don't we go get something to eat? You look starved."

Ignoring the hunger clawing at her stomach, she shook her head.

"No you go ahead, I'm just going to get some rest." She answered, leaving Sarah standing confused at the bottom of the grand staircase that lead to the upper floors of the mansion. After entering her bedroom, she quickly locked the door behind her. She stood for a moment with her head resting against  it's thick wooden surface just listening to the wind blowing outside her bedroom window. It was a rare thing, silence, and she drank it in. Suddenly overwhelmed with ehaustion, she stumbled over to the king-sized bed placed in the middle of the room. Sinking down onto it's blood red velvet coverlet, she slowly drifted off into a nightmare.
