Chapter Nine:
I woke up the next morning to birds chirping in my ear. ‘Stupid birds’ I thought and got up. I wiped the sleep out of my eyes and saw what time it was. 10:30! Wow, I must have been tired. I put my bathrobe on and headed towards the bathroom. I did my business and also made sure my hair was not messy. I brushed my teeth, then headed downstairs. When I got there, I saw Marissa huddled up on the couch in a blanket, just like she was at her house. "Good morning." I said and looked around for Ben. Hmm, nowhere to be found. "Boo!" "Ah!" I said and turned around to see Ben smiling at me. "Good morning, beautiful," then he kissed me on the cheek. I gave him a smile and headed towards the kitchen. "Good morning, Mom." "Morning, hun." and she set three plates on the table. "You guys come in here and get some breakfast. You’ll feel better." Ben walked through the living room to the kitchen. "I’ll take some food. I’m starving." Mom smiled at him," Marissa, what about you, sweetie?" Marissa looked up from the couch, all depressed and down. "I’ll pass." Then she looked back at the TV, staring at the blackness of the TV because it wasn’t even turned on. I gave her a sympathetic smile and walked to my plate that was on the table. "Looks good, Mom" "Why, thank you sweetie." And she went down the hall. I sat down at my chair, looking at the food. It looked good. We ate in silence, afraid that our sudden happy mood would make Marissa even more sad. She couldn’t here us but still, I didn’t want her to think I didn’t care. Ben kept on smiling at me, making me blush and laugh a little.
When I was finished I went up to my room to dress. When I was half way dressed, I had a knock on my door. "Who is it?" "Me," Ben said and I smiled. "Hold on a second," and I finished dressing and opened the door. In his hand, was a little yellow flower. Apparently he got it out of the backyard. I gave him a big smile while he handed me the flower. "Thank you," and I kissed his cheek lightly. "Your welcome," he said and he headed down the hall. I looked at the small, yellow flower. It was like I was seeing it for the first time, even though I had seen them all my life. I smiled at the flower and put it on my bed. ‘I’ll put it up later,’ I thought and headed down the hall. When I got there, Marissa was in the same position she was when I first saw her this morning. I felt bad for her. Her dog and now her dad? I went over to her and sat down beside her. "You OK today?" and she looked up. "Sure.." and she looked back at the screen. "Hey, Mar, Do you wanna go see your Mom today?" Ben asked coming out of the bathroom. Marissa looked up, "I guess. I don’t really care anymore. I’d just like to sit here and die. That’s a good choice." I looked at Marissa. "Don’t say that. You still have people that care about you. Me, Ben, Your Mom, other family. We love you Marissa." Ben nodded his head in agreement. "Yeah, I mean I may say I hate you sometimes, but deep down inside I love you, Mar." He laughed and Marissa smiled. The first time since yesterday. "I love you guys too, but I don’t want you guys to not be able to go on your date because of me. So you know what? Get going. NOW!" She said and actually laughed! I looked at Ben and he nodded. "OK, well let’s get going!" and I started to my room.
