Chapter Six:

When we got inside, Marissa was sitting on the couch huddled up in a blanket watching TV. I sat down beside her as Ben went down the hall to the bathroom. "Are you OK?" She looked up, all depressed. "Yeah, I just had...a memory of my old dog. She died a week ago." "Yeah, Ben told me. I’m sorry." I said. "Well, it’s ok. It’s just...we grew up together. I loved that dog." I nodded and we sat there in silence. Then Ben came out of the bathroom and plopped down on the couch, making me and Marissa scream. "Hey watch it, you idiot!" Marissa said and I laughed. "Who are you callin’ an idiot?" "Um, apparently you. You’re the only one that is acting stupid." "Sorry," Ben said as he put his hands up like he had been caught by the police for stealing. "Hey, I’m gonna go get something to eat. You mind?" Marissa shook her head no and Ben headed towards the kitchen. "I take it you guys aren’t that close." I said to Marissa as Ben walked towards the kitchen. "We grew up together. We act like brother and sister, as you can tell, it’s just he acts stupid sometimes." "Oh," I said and laughed.

Ben came back from the kitchen, sandwich in hand. "Want a bite?" he said in mid-chew. I laughed, "No thanks." Suddenly, Marissa got up, startling me. "You know what guys?" "What?" Ben and I said at the same time. "Let’s get out of here." "And go where?" Ben said chewing his last bite of his sandwich. "I don’t know. Somewhere. Like..." and she trailed off. Ben and I had her full attention, wondering where she wanted to go. "Let’s go to Fred’s Ice Cream Shop. I gotta get out of here. It’s soo boring here." Ben and I looked at each other. "OK." We both said at the same time and we headed towards the car. I got in the passenger side seat and Ben got in back, while Marissa was getting into the driver’s seat. "Buckle up. I’m not paying for your ticket." "I know you aren’t. I got my own money." Ben said and he buckled up. ‘He is funny’ I thought to myself. I really like him.

Fred’s Ice Cream Shop was only four blocks away. When we got there, we all got out and headed inside. We slid inside the red seated booth. A guy that worked there came up and asked us what we wanted. "I’ll have..." Marissa said as she drummed her fingers onto the table," An ice cream sundae." The waiter wrote it down, "And you guys?" "I’ll take a strawberry sundae." Ben said and put the menu back where it was at. "Um, I guess I’ll have the strawberry sundae as well." "OK, I’ll be right back with your orders." When the guy left, Marissa said,"So, do you think your mom will let me and Ben come over for dinner?" That was a total turn around. I hadn’t expected her to ask that kind of question. "Um, I’d have to call and ask, but I think she’ll let you guys. Hey, give me your cell phone. I’ll call and ask If you guys can." "OK." I took her cellphone and got up from the booth. "I’ll be right back, "I said then I headed out the door. I dialed the number and it rung four times. "Hello?" "Hey, Mom. It’s Kat. I was wondering, can Marissa and Ben come over for dinner?" "Sure honey," I high fived the air."Thanks Mom, when IS dinner anyway?" "It’ll be in about an hour." "OK. I’ll see you then. Love you!" "Love you too, sweetie." Then I hanged up the phone. I headed back inside, just as the waiter put our orders down. I sat down and waited til the waiter left to tell them. "She said yes." Ben smiled and dug into his sundae. "Good because I didn’t feel like going home. I would have been bored." I laughed and we started eating our sundaes. I couldn’t wait til dinner. It was going to be fun.
