Thief Like Me Pt. 2

Hours had passed since the robbery and night was quickly descending. Carrina sat alone on a cliff that overlooked most of the kingdom including the castle in the distance.
She sighed and placed her chin again her knees. She had left the men alone to their celebration in the caves which most times led to drinking and some of the men were ‘uncontrollable’ when they were deep in their cups.
Despite their faults these men had become her family. After all they had practically raised her, teaching her to fight and how to be sneaky. In fact she was probably the quietest and slinkiest one of them all.
They had taught her well.
But it could not last and she knew it. This life they lived…the stealing and constant running. The running would stop one day with their capture. They couldn’t keep robbing these woods without consequence.
She sighed. She had tried talking to Louis but he would not listen. They had enough to settle down for a while until one of them could find a way to earn the money. She could work at one of the shops in one of the towns and he could work at a stable or a tavern. Then they could pass for father and daughter and would not have to worry about the foolish talk of others.
But Louis just kept saying we will after this last robbery. She had lost count of how many robberies ago he had said it.
At that moment the man of her thoughts came through the foliage behind her knowing she would be here to get away from the younger and more ‘new’ men to the group who knew no boundaries.
She was silent as he sat down next to her.
He did not speak so she broke the silence for him.
“I’m leaving,” she whispered.
His head turned sharply. “What?”
Her eyes closed and her head remained on her knees. She tilted it slightly to look at him. His almond eyes were wide with shock and his dark brown hair had the windblown look it had most days. Louis was not terribly old. He had been twenty-eight that day she had met him ten years ago and he had only aged slightly. It was easy to believe by just judging that he was in his late twenties.
When she was twelve she grew the courage to ask him his story.
Louis had grew up with a father who never treated him right and was over controlling never allowing Louis to live the way he wanted to.
Louis finally grew the courage to face his father (it had helped also that he had grown larger than him) and told him that he was leaving. Louis was ready to get away and begin making his own life. His father grew furious about this. His father told him that he was an ungrateful child and Louis should appreciate the things he had done for him.
When Louis’s mind did not change his father attacked him in anger and in the end it was a fight to the death. You can guess who won.
When Louis ran away he ran straight to the forest and wondered a few days surviving on the fruit he could find and the game he could hunt getting his water from the streams.
It was on the fourth day that he stumbled into the camp ground of five other men. After they put their weapons away and it known they were not enemies to each other they all began talking and one thing led to another and then they began robbing to get what they wanted.
At least that was the way Louis had put it. He had never really admitted to her what had made them decide that robbing was the way to go. The group had been about ten men when they had found her and now ten years later the group had only made it to over fifteen men and one girl who they were about to lose.
“You heard me,” she said still quiet.
“I don’t understand.”
“I told you we couldn’t do this forever Louis and I meant it. I want to leave and I’m going to. I’ll just take a few little things that will get me a room in one of the towns and I’ll find work and begin earning my money.”
“B-but…what about tomorrow? We can’t do it without you.”
She sighed. She had already thought about it. “I’m going to say something you said to me once but I’m going to mean it. After this last one i'm gone,” she said turning her head to gaze out onto the now dark valleys.
She could see the specks of yellow where people were still up enjoying their moments with their families. She sighed.
“You’re stubborn,” Louis finally said. “I realized that a little while after I took you in and you’ve made your decision and I’m not going to try and change it cause I know there’s nothing I can do to change it.”
She wanted to cry. This was her family! The only one she had ever known. Sure some of them were rough but the others; they were all like uncles to her. Always playing with her when she was younger and always bringing her things from nearby towns. New dresses or a new toy.
It hurt her to leave them but she couldn’t stay when she knew as each day passed the chance of them getting caught came closer and closer.
She sniffed but refused to cry. She had not cried since that moment with the woman and the prince in the clearing and even now she refused to cry. She refused to allow anyone see her like that. Crying was a weakness she refused to give into.
Louis leaned over and wrapped his arms around her and she buried her face into his shirt.
“Not going to be the same without you little flower,” he sighed.
She nodded. “I’ll miss you,” she mumbled through his shirt.
“I’ll miss you too. It’s like I’m losing my only daughter,” he chuckled humorlessly.
She looked up at him smiled and kissed his cheek before pulling back. “You’ll know where I live and you can come visit me anytime you want. You and any of the men.”
He laughed, this time with humor. “Even young Francis?”
She frowned and her eyes narrowed. Francis was their newest member and the most naïve and arrogant.
When he had first arrived and discovered a woman in the group he did not believe that she was in fact one of the robbers. After all how could a woman possibly fight and steal.
So at first sight he had in a very loud voice said, “you guy’s got your own whore?”
Everyone had grown silent at these words and Carrina who had been walking by stopped and turned to him.
He had smiled a large smile revealing his hideous yellowed teeth. Carrina had smiled in return and approached him fighting laughter when she noticed the other’s around him back away.
When she stood close to him she grabbed his shoulders and brought her knee up hard between his legs.
His eyes grew real large and the smile fell quickly from his face before he fell back gasping and groaning clutching at himself.
The men had burst into laughter and Carrina smiled sweetly before saying “oops” and walking away and despite that one lesson the guy never learned his lesson and had tried repeatedly to get her to as he put it, ‘have a romp in the hay with him.’
She scowled and looked to Louis brought back from her thoughts. “Do me a favor Louis,” she smiled as he lifted his brow in inquiry. “Leave Francis behind.”
