Thief Like Me (Prologue)
|
Carrina knew she was an ugly child. It was a simple known fact. In all her eight years had she ever heard the term pretty in reference to herself. But her childish mind refused to believe that her stringy red hair and dull green eyes could ever not be considered at least a slight semblance of cute. Her scrawny figure and constant clumsiness could not be considered faults could they?
Carrina blamed it on her parents. After all they were the ones who brought her to this world and left her to face it alone. In Carrina’s mind she was ugly because she lived at a home for abandoned and parentless children and others looked down upon that.
One boy specifically would never leave her mind. How could someone forget someone who was as cruel and as heartless as him?
Though Carrina lived at an orphanage she was given many freedoms. One of many being her visits to the river.
To Carrina those visits to the river were everything. It was her own personal haven away from the cruelties of life. There, she could imagine anything she wanted.
Her favorite daydream was that her parents had never abandoned her. She had been stolen from the castle and she was a beautiful princess whose parents would one day find her and they would live happily ever after. A fond fantasy of many of the girls from the orphanage.
The day was bright and beautiful on the day Carrina chose to visit her spot by the river.
She had made herself a crown of flowers and was twirling about when her dreams were suddenly and crudely interrupted.
“What are you doing?” the voice broke through her reverie.
She turned with a gasp and jerked the flowers from atop her head. “N-nothing,” she stammered to the older boy who watched from beside a tree.
His brow furrowed as he came closer. “It didn’t look like nothing.”
She shrugged.
“You were pretending to be a princess weren’t you?”
She shook her head furiously.
“Yes you were!” he protested loudly. “I’ve seen lots of girls do it.”
She chose to maintain her silence.
“Well, you can’t be a princess cause I’m the crowned prince Lanceton and the only way you could become a princess is to become my bride and I would never have anyone who looked like you,” with his announcement he stood taller.
Her eyes narrowed. “What do you mean looks like me?”
His eyes reflected his distaste. “Well, look at you. You’re face is covered in freckles and you’re hair resembles the hay we feed the horses. Except for its color. And you’re too tall. I bet your one of those orphans. You can’t be a princess without parents who are rich.”
Carrina wanted to cry at his cruel words. She had heard most of it before but before it had never hurt as much as they did from him or said with as much contempt but she refused to cry. She did not want to appear weak in front of him.
“Well I’d rather be ugly and not have parents than to be some brat like you. I don’t think I want to become a princess if it meant spending my time with horrible boys like you.”
His face turned red in anger and he opened his mouth to retort when they were interrupted by the yelling of a female voice.
“Lanceton!” a young woman came into the clearing and grabbed his arm. She was dressed a long sweeping gown of violet and had long golden hair and her very air spoke of elegance.
She glanced over at Carrina before returning to scold the young prince. “What do you think you are doing with this filth?” she demanded disdainfully. “You are not to be seen with the likes of her.”
“Yes mother,” the prince grumbled.
“Now come away from here. You are late for your lessons!” she yanked on his arm and began pulling him along behind her.
He turned around and Carrina in act of annoyance at them both stuck her tongue out at the young prince. His face scrunched together and his eyes narrowed in a look that clearly spoke of dislike.
Once they were out of sight Carrina slumped against the nearest tree and wiped away the one runaway tear that had broke free of its barrier.
Three Weeks Later….
Carrina’s life had been changed in so many ways she did not think possible.
Two weeks earlier a man had arrived at the orphanage seeking her out. To her joy he was soon discovered to be a long lost cousin of her mother. The joy quickly died when his purpose in seeking Carrina out was discovered.
Of course he did not admit it to the owners of the orphanage to his real purpose. To them he was just a lonely man missing his cousin and as a act of kindness and alones decided to take in his cousin’s daughter and raise her in honor of her mother’s memory. That was the lie.
The truth was the man was an avid gambler with more losing streaks than wins and was currently in a bad way and owed too many debts. He was sending Carrina to the black market where she would be sold as a slave and the money going to her cousin. Of course she did not realize this until after he had taken her and there was no way to get away.
He considered her an investment that would earn him some extra money.
So now here she was in his carriage with one of his most trusted men on her way to become a slave. As much as she disliked being a orphan she would prefer it any day than the horrible life she was sure she was heading for.
A sudden shrill ring split the air and Carrina who had been gazing out the window at the passing forest gasped in horror. Men emerged from the forest with a yell bearing weapons upon weapons.
Carrina hunched down and crawled to the corner wanting not to be noticed.
What could the robbers want with this carriage? The only people were the driver and herself and there was no money as far as she knew. Obviously he was broke if he must sell her to pay his debts.
She squeezed her eyes shut when something large banged against the carriage. She heard the cry of the driver and the echoing of laughter.
Suddenly the door was wrenched open and she buried her head in her knees fighting the urge to scream.
There was silence before someone spoke. “Louis, I think ya need to come an’ see this.”
Carrina didn’t move, her body frozen by fear. Footsteps sounded and there was a mumbling of lowered voices.
Then someone was in the carriage with her. A hand was placed on her shoulder and she jumped with a loud squeak.
“It’s alright, little one! Calm down. We’re not going to hurt you.”
Carrina looked up at him shyly. He had dark brown graying hair, and dark brown eyes. His face spoke of kindness, an odd trait she believed for a robber. He smiled at her.
“What would you be doing on this carriage?” he asked.
“M-my cousin is sending me away,” she whispered.
The man’s facial expression grew thoughtful. “And why would he send such a pretty little thing like you to learn to clean?”
Carrina frowned and set her chin against her knees. “I’m not pretty,” she thought about the cruel young prince and the beautiful woman.
He placed his hand beneath her chin and forced her to look up at him. His look was pondering. “Maybe not now but you will be. I think you just need time to bloom.”
Her brow furrowed.
He smiled suddenly and looked over at the open door where another man stood before continuing to speak.
“And, I think I have a perfect idea,” the man he was looking at had a look across his face that she could not read. Then he nodded. The man she knew as Louis returned his gaze to her. “What is your name little flower?”
“Carrina.”
He smiled. “A beautiful name! And my dear Carrina why is your cousin sending you away?”
“He needs money. I’m being sold as a slave,” her voice grew quiet again.
Louis’s smile immediately faded and in its place was a look of disgust.
“You don’t want this do you Carrina?”
She shook her head furiously and his smile returned.
“Then I think I have the perfect place for you.”
“You do?”
“Yes my little flower, consider us, your new family.”
