He could hear the sound of a sweet and gentle voice weeping. Amidst the tears she was saying she was sorry and that it was all her fault.
Why would the voice apologize and for what? Everything seemed muffled and disoriented. He tried opening his eyes but they would not move. It was as if he had no control over his body.
The voice continued to weep he remained there listening wishing he could comfort the voice or even move for that matter.
How had he gotten to this place of darkness? All it seemed that he could remember was the pain and the darkness that he had happily surrendered to.
He also remembered voices sometime after that but he had not been able to make out their voices so he could not be sure that they had even been there or if it was something his mind had conjured up.
Something light and warm touched his cheek and soon retreated but the warmth lingered. The voice had calmed now but was now whispering in his ear.
“I don’t care Vayden,” the voice whimpered brokenly and filled with pain. “Do you hear me? I don’t care what you are, just please don’t leave me.”
He recognized the voice. It was familiar, elusive on the edge of his mind but never seeming to come to him.
He had to answer, move…do something!
Seeming as if it required most of his strength he lifted his hand and his head rolled to the side immediately bringing forth an excruciating pain throughout his head. He groaned.
“Vayden?” questioned the voice but he scarcely heard it for he had already succumbed to the darkness once again.
When he woke again he discovered it to be much easier than before. His eyes slowly flickered open to the ceiling of his room above him.
He looked down beside him and it was then that he noticed Anna. Her head was laid against the bed on her crossed arms and her mouth was parted slightly from sleep.
He moved his hand slowly and stroked her silky soft hair. She stirred slightly and he watched as her lids slowly lifted to reveal her shining emerald eyes clouded with sleep.
He smiled slightly finding his movements stiff and uncomfortable.
“Vayden!” she shot up with a snap wiping the sleep from her eyes before scooting closer. “You’re awake. How are you feeling?”
He said nothing but instead fingered the ends of her hair. “The pink is gone,” he commented. “I never noticed.”
She smiled. “After I met you I guess I felt a little childish with the ends of my hair pink,”
He smiled and began running his hand along the edge of her jaw, across her lips, and across her eyelids.
“How long have I been asleep,” he asked finally.
“Four days. Your father was afraid you weren’t going to make it. Both your parents were very upset, they think it’s their fault.”
He shook his head and sighed.
Anna leaned closer and gripped his face between her hands to force him to look at her. “Why did you do it Vayden?” she whispered her eyes pleading for him to tell her.
“You were so frightened of me,” he said avoiding her eyes.
She frowned in bemusement.
“I went over many things in my head on how to handle the situation. I should have never brought you here and for that I hope you can forgive me?”
She nodded. “Of course I forgive you,” she said still waiting for her answer.
Still avoiding her eyes he continued. “I thought with you so frightened the best thing for me to do would be to take you back and leave forever and let it be as if you never met me.”
She began to say something but he continued before she had the chance to speak.
“I kind of wish I had did that because I would rather live knowing your alive and happy than knowing that I was selfish enough to keep you and be the cause of your pain or…your death.”
She was silent.
“My mother came to me and we talked. She said things that I didn’t want to hear but knew they were true. When she left I got angry and well…lets just say my father’s study is no longer in very good shape. That’s when I found the potion. I don’t know if you know about it or not but…”
“I know,” she said. “You mother explained what had happened to you when they brought you here. She tried to get me to go to another room saying that if you woke and something had went wrong then you might very well kill me but,” she shook her head. “I just couldn’t leave you knowing that I was most likely the reason you were going through all of this pain for. She also told me that what you had done was basically suicide.”
His brow immediately furrowed at the though of hurting her purposely ignoring the suicide part. His mother was right. He should be ravenous with his hunger and ready to rip Anna apart but he wasn’t.
He frowned and looked at her oddly. “What time is it?” he questioned.
She glanced down at a watch on her arm and returned her gaze to him. “One.”
“In the morning?”
She shook her head. “The evening.”
His eyes widened and he caught his breath. Never in all his life had he been awake at that time. It was not possible for a vampire. Once the sun began to rise they immediately felt an exhaustion spread over them until they would finally drift off in a near death like sleep oblivious to their surroundings.
He suddenly felt a new urgency as he began to force himself into sitting position ignoring the weakness of his limbs.
“Vayden!” exclaimed Anna alarmed. “Stop…you need to rest,”
He shook his head and swatted away her hands which tried to push him back down. Getting the hint she leaned back and with a non to happy expression watched at he struggled until he finally managed to get up into a sitting position leaning heavily against the headboard.
He was gasping with the effort but he did not care.
“Open the curtains!” he commanded excitedly.
She stood slowly. “What?”
“Open the curtains!” he exclaimed more urgently this time.
She slowly walked to them but as she reached them she began shaking her head. “I can’t Vayden. Vampires can’t come out into sunlight and your mother had already told me that during the day I was to under no circumstance open these curtains.”
He laughed. “Anna you don’t understand!”
“If your trying to kill yourself again then I will not be apart of it or aid in any way. You…”
“Anna,” he yelled cutting her off. His voice softer now he explained. “Anna, no vampire can be awake at this time.”
“Excuse me?” she asked her face immediately resuming its look of confusion. It seemed that was to become a permanent expression based on today.
“Anna my mother was right. I should be wanting nothing but to drink the blood that runs through you right now with no concern of your death,’ she winced. “Sorry. Should have put it a little bit gentler.”
She shook her head. “It’s alright but why aren’t you?”
He ignored her question but continued on with what he was saying. “And if it is the time you say it is then you should be the only one awake in the house at this moment. Vampire’s bodies do not have the capability to stay awake when the sun rises. It’s as if a sudden exhaustion overcomes us.”
“Then…” she trailed off sudden realization filling her eyes.
“Open the curtains Anna,” he coaxed softly.
He watched, the hesitation and curiosity she felt was obvious to him. She turned and placed her hands of the deep velvet curtains and looked over her shoulder at him, her body tense with uneasiness.
He smiled reassuringly.
With a resigned sigh she turned and with only a moment’s hesitation threw them open wide.
He gasped…
