Defying Forever! Pt. 9

She sat curled up in the window seal gazing out over the night shrouded forest, when he finally returned.

Her head snapped in his direction at the sound of the closing door.  She smiled.  “Is everything alright?” she questioned noticing his troubled look.

He nodded.  “It’s just been awhile since I’ve seen or even spoken to my parents.”

She stood and walked over to him and held his face in her hands gazing up at his face.  “Are you sure it’s just that?”

He sighed and placed his hands on hers; the warmth radiating from her skin before he finally pulled them from his face.  “Let’s sit down,” he suggested indicating the couch that sat against one of the walls.  “We need to talk.”

She frowned worry in her eyes but complied and they both sat.

“I have not been totally truthful to you,” he began.

“What do you mean?” she asked.

He leaned forward placed his elbows on his knees and gazed at the plush carpet.  “There is something about me that I did not tell you before we came here which was a big mistake in the first place but I…”

“Vayden…I know,” she said interrupting him.

His head shot up and his gaze connected with hers.

“You’re rich,” she commented shrugging.  “That much was obvious when I woke up in this room,” she said gazing pointedly at the room she was in.

He shook his head.  She though that was what he was keeping from her?

“No Anna, it’s not that it’s…bigger than that,”

“Bigger than your family having a bunch of money?”

He nodded not meeting her gaze.  “I should have never brought you here.  I should have forgotten you the minute we met,” he said more to himself than her.

“Do you mean you regret ever saving me?” she asked quietly, pain in her voice.

“NO!” he said venomously grabbing her by the shoulders and shaking her slightly.  “Don’t ever think that I regret saving you.  Don’t ever think that.”

“But I don’t understand.  You regret us ever getting to know each other?”

He was silent.  “It’s true that it would have been better if you had never met me but I can honestly say no…I do not regret knowing you just what you’re about to find out.”

“You’re married,” she said with a slight tilt of her lips.

He chuckled looking away for a moment before returning his gaze to her.  “Anna I…I’m not human,” there he said it.

Her brow furrowed and she began laughing.  “What? You’re trying to tell me that you’re a…”

“A vampire,” he said finishing it for her and allowing her now time to come up with something else entirely.

She shook her head.  “No…then that would mean that you would not be able to go out in...” her voice trailed off and he knew what she was about to say.

“I wouldn’t be able to go out in sunlight.  Think, have you ever been around me during the day?”

She was silent her lips pursed in thought.  Then her eyes began to show realization.

“Have you ever seen me eat near you?”

She noticeably swallowed and shook her head in denial.

     His brows rose.

“B-but you can’t be a vampire! They don’t exist!” she protested standing and notably taking a few steps from him.

He stood also.  “Or so, many humans believe.  Do you think we would honestly let your people know about us?  We would be hunted and killed within the first few weeks of discovery not to mention the accusations that would fly and the thousands of innocent people who would die,” he shook his head.

She was slowly baking away from him.  “It’s a lie…”

“Anna I would not lie to you,” he said quietly seeing the fear in her eyes as she slowly began backing away.

“But if you’re really what you say then wouldn’t you have already lied to me?”

He shook his head.  “I never claimed to be human.  The evidence was there for you if you just think about it.  The time I saved you from the train, always insisting we meet at night…”

Tears were streaming down her face and as frightened as she was he continued.  “That’s why mother looks as young as she does.  Technically she’s only twenty-three.”

Her eyes widened in shock and her back hit the wall behind her.  She gasped. “H-how old are you really?”

He took her question as meaning she was beginning to face the truth. He frowned and sighed.  “Forty-seven,”

“For…”she paused. “That would mean you’re older than my own father!”

He gave a crooked grin.  “Only in years,”

She covered her face and slowly slid down the wall shaking her head in denial.

He quickly came to her side and grabbed her hands.  She jumped and looked at him with her tear filled eyes.

A great sorrow seemed to weigh him down at that moment.

“I know you are frightened…” he began.

“Frightened!” she exclaimed. “Vayden, you brought me to a house filled with…”her voice caught on the word.  “vampires!”

He winced.  That had not been one of his smarter ideas.  “We do not feed on humans.  Only animals, that’s why we live so far away from civilization and that is why you met me in an abandoned subway.  Plenty of rats.”

     She grimaced.

He slowly placed his hand on her cheek and she began shivering and watching her as she avoided his gaze he knew she was shivering from the cool touch of him hand but of fear of him.  “Please do not be afraid of me Anna,” he whispered brokenly.  “Please…”
